  1. On the same subject... on Rob Enderle Announces Death of Bluetooth · · Score: 2, Interesting

A University lecturer where I live (Bristol, UK) has taken 1,300 flourescant tubes, and stuck them in the ground underneath a pylon (the result being they all ignite). Kind of spooks out people driving past when they see a thousand strip lights on with seemingly no wires.

  2. Oh no! on The Self-Tuning Guitar · · Score: 1

This'll be the end of an era of teenagers trying to play badly out of tune guitars! Where will it end next? Drums that play themselves? Oh, wait a minute.

  3. Re:Growing Distros on Giant List Of Linux-based Live CDs · · Score: 1

Maybe because DVDs are more expensive to produce than CDs? I'm not too sure. Then again, I do remember stuff being released on floppies for some time after CD-Rom drives had become widely available.

  4. A better soltution - Cellphone Detectors on Cell-Phone Wars · · Score: 5, Insightful

In the theatre industry we have to think of other creative ways of stopping cellphones even from being switched on (even on silent - as most tech people know, digital cellphones can badly interfere with electronic equipment). Thus, a company does produce a "cellphone detector", picking up cellphone radiation. An automated message can inform people to turn their phones off - failing that, in cases where phones MUST be turned off (live recordings etc) you can refuse to start until all phones are off.

  6. Mandatory DNA Sampling on Surveillance Cameras in Britain Not Effective? · · Score: 1

The UK does not have mandatory DNA sampling as such. However, you are required to give a swab (of saliva) if you are arrested and charged with a crime.

This makes a lot of sense - the police can see if your DNA matches with previous crimes, and connect crimes you might commit in the future to you.

  7. I've known this for years... on Expert Says Glass Is Major Threat to Birds · · Score: 1

...there's a big 6ft by 10ft glass pane in my house - at least once a month a bird (normally a pidgeon) whacks into it, normally either breaking a load of bones (in which case a guy from the RSPB comes round), or dies instantly. Once I've returned home to find the pane completely cracked with a duck lying in the grass...

  13. Max Payne & ADD on On Auto-Dynamic Difficulty In Videogames · · Score: 3, Insightful

Of course, the one thing that does make Max Payne different is the fact that once you have completed the game, you unlock a harder mode of difficulty - so although many people can be happy that they've completed the game and so spread the word, not as many people can say they've completed the game in New York Minute mode. It means that everyone can 'complete' the game, but only the best can fully complete it.

  14. Re:legal? on Morpheus Infiltrates Other P2P Networks · · Score: 1

  15. Stop it with the Kate Rose whining! on Live Action Neon Genesis Evangelion Concept Art · · Score: 1

As has already been pointed out, Kate Rose is listed under IMDB as a costume designer.

Not only that, but this is CONCEPT ART. Concept art is normally carried out before the script is written - a writer may not even have been assigned yet. Concept art is there to see whether the thing's going to work on screen. It's exactly that, a "concept". Nothing's final, so quit complaining :)

  16. Re:Playboy on Web Ad Trademark Law To Be Retested · · Score: 1

If I searched for Playboy, and an advertisement popped up advertising the stage play "The Playboy Of The Western World", there would be no case. Clearly, the demographic that goes to see such stage plays is not Playboy's target audience. However, I can see Playboy's stance being quite reasonable in this case - somebody searches for Playboy, and an advert showing another adult entertainment site is triggered. The advertiser is targeting the audience using the playboy name. It's like me searching for coca-cola, and an advert for Pepsi popping up.

  17. Death of Silver on Apple Introduces Logic Pro 6 and Logic Express · · Score: 5, Insightful

I would have preferred to see Apple keep the Silver, Gold and Platinum pricing system for Logic - Gold was around $499 when I bought it, a decent compromise, especially when I didn't need the extra features (eg, 5.1 capability) that Platinum editions provided. However, this means I either spend $999 (which I can't really afford), or $299 for something that won't have the features I need.

  19. Re:Superior? on HP Working With Apple To Add WMA Support To iPod · · Score: 1

Yes, your husband can - but can you? It's the same with a MiniDisc - the vast majority of consumers cannot tell the difference between CD quality and MiniDisc quality.

In a portable player, quality is less of an issue - I don't take my $200 AKG even respone headphones out with my iPod. I take the Apple set. Sure, the Apple set are much better than the $10 pair I might pick up, but there's no way I'm going to be able to tell the quality difference between OGG and MP3 when I'm on a bus and there's a hell of a lot of background noise.

In the end, consumers simply don't CARE aobut the fine difference between MP3 and OGG. If I told my sister she should get the Rio because it supports OGG, she'd say "what the hell's OGG?".

  20. Re:Minidisc audio quality vs. your avg. "MP3 playe on New Sony Minidisc Players · · Score: 1

    To add to the above:
Although CD quality IS much higher than MiniDisc, it's really quite unnoticable - MiniDisc is THE standard for theatre where I live. Not only does my college use it, but so do the two major professional theatres. It's grown in popularity in the theatre world because of it's ultra quick access times, and ease of looping when compared to CD. Of course, this is using a professional MiniDisc deck, going through professional EQ units - you won't get that kind of quality on a portable.

Finally, the Sony Professional MiniDiscs are virtually indestructable (the casing being metal, instead of plastic)...

  21. Cheating on TI Launches Three New Graphing Calculators · · Score: 2, Interesting

Surely calculators like this offer more chances for cheating on your exams (SAT, AP etc) - the programming features on these calculators can instead be used to store plain text, enabling you to write down formulae, notes etc.

I've used a graphing calculator for SATs, and was never asked to erase the memory. With USB, you could simply type up your notes on a PC, transfer them, and use them...

  24. Gegoraphical Location on Congress Loves Spam -- If It's From Congress · · Score: 1

Surely the biggest problem polititians have is, unlike normal spam, the audience they are trying to reach is located in a very specific area. Mass emailing simply wouldn't work - although there may on most spam be a 0.1% response rate, this would be reduced even further to virtually nil when location is factored in. Even "spam lists" would have some degree of innacuracy when it comes to location of the recipitant. Maybe I'm missing something...
