The headline initially had me intrigued thinking that the USA Patriot act or some portion of it had been struck down as unconstitutional, or maybe that ISPs were refusing to do the RIAAs dirty work by not sending threatening letters for them. However...
nothing to see here, move along....
You are both getting at the very core of the problem. Regardless of math errors, in its simplest form this is an economic problem. Nothing will ever successfully address the global warming problem if it isn't economically viable. Americans, and people in general, are not willing to change their electrical system or change to an alternate fuel vehicle if it costs more than a conventional system. This is why you saw a surge in biofuels, alcohols, etc., when gasoline was $3.25 per gallon here. Now that people have gotten over the shock of that, and gasoline is down to a more "manageable" $2.25 per gallon there is less impetus to pay for biofuels which would include a large federal subsidy, effectively making it more than $3-ish.
Yes. If I understand correctly, if it's released under the GNU GPL, then they must give you the source, and you are free to do with it as you please, provided if you modify and re-release it, you also release your source modifications. They may charge a reasonable and customary fee for recovering the cost of distribution. However, they can also charge for support. There are also wolves in sheep's clothing touting themselves as open source, when they merely run on Linux, but are not open, and not free.
Now, now, let's not insult each other. We Americans understand Marxist "ideals". We also understand that central control and distribution of wealth doesn't work. Progressive taxation should be described more as oppressive taxation. Socialist ideals lead to rampant mediocrity. No one gets left behind, and no one has any motivation to succeed either. Although you see Marxism as a cure for what you view as hegemony, I do not. Marxism cannot be achieved without some form of hegemony, for example, powerful party leaders forcing their ideals on a defenseless populace in order to retain that power. We are not ignorant of Marxism, we have just learned from its failures already.
Back on the original topic, I agree that the current approach to homeland security is inept, and as TFA states is primarily driven by cover-my-ass motives. Common sense is not being used. Common sense doesn't allow an 80 year old grandmother to get a special search from someone who is "just following the procedures". Common sense doesn't allow some stupid district attorney or police chief in Boston to file charges against someone for their own overblown reaction to a non-event.
Agreed. The profit margin is in the paper. How many times has a company promised to save you money on printing costs, and yet somehow that involves buying their printers? Xerox, Lexmark, HP, et al., have a vested interest in keeping the printers running until MTBF, the ink drying up, and the trays running out of paper. Anyone who falls for this shallow scheme deserves what they get.
Approaching security with "common sense" in a racist, sexist and capitalist society is dangerous at best...
Read it again. towsonu2003 implies equivalence by deriding a lack of common sense in describing society as racist, sexist, and capitalist. So... racism and sexism lack common sense, but capitalism doesn't? Why mention it in the same statement? Your argument doesn't hold water, unless you're using the Steve Martin form of the English language. "Can I mambo dogface in the banana patch?"
I do not see how one equates racism, sexism, and capitalism. Racism, and sexism are despicable. Capitalism, in its purest form is the most egalitarian of ideals. Compete on merit, or perish. Perhaps you are speaking of litigation driven, liability mitigating, political lobbying, unfair advantage seeking, quasi-capitalism that is the state of business today.
by the fact that efforts of the Government and Corporations and the Defense Complex at keeping the populace scared of their own fucking shadows has apparently succeeded.

but a hole in this theory has been its inability to explain why the ice ages changed frequency a million years ago.
Obviously there are also other holes, as you eloquently stated.
The cell is capable of storing a file the size of the United States' Declaration of Independence with room left over.

Change the names of the products/devices/discoveries/inventions or whatever, and you'll know how I feel about this type of crap. I mean, are they storing it as Unicode, Ascii, EBCDIC, cause the storage requirement varies. TFAuthor could have just said it could store one byte with LOTS of room left over.
Yes.
I'm not saying anything bad about OSX, just the pricing. If Apple is supposed to be a consumer electronics company, then the software should be free, or at the very least, inexpensive. I'll grant you that OSX costs way less than windows short term and long term, but 130 bucks for a yearly point release is ridiculous. I'm still running 10.3.9, with no plans for Tiger any time soon.
No, do not be impressed. This is only a test. There is no content. In the event that there is actual content, you will be notified by a Slashdot front page article.....wait.....dammit.
Also, does anyone have to be show how to do something in Perl? In general, if yo slap together some code, it'll run. Whether it will do what you want or not, is usually up for debate. Iterations of this process will eventually make it perform the task at hand.
Righto! Here's my solution to the same problem -> http://www.bullshitbingo.net/cards/bullshit/

They did this with the WiFi update, and now with BootCamp. This should not be surprising, since they put out POINT RELEASES of OSX for $US129.
