regular folks who do not hate porn but who would rather it waited until asked for to be jumping in front of their faces
Based on my own experience with the Internet, finding pornography unintentionally is pretty damn unlikely. Sounds like you're just making excuses.
And the real problem with this measure is that it won't work. If something like this was technically feasible, don't you think ISPs would have already been offering it? It's just pure, unadulterated political bullshit: they know that nobody's gonna come out publicly and defend "pornography and violence". (Well, at least I will, but nobody listens to me anyway.)
Hijacker type programs to keep you coming back, pop ups in case your interest does wane
Yeah, you do have a point there. My advice is to stop using Explorer - that right there will be more effective than any legislation.
Exactly. Judging by the comments here and elsewhere, most of the people who hated this movie completely missed the satirical intent. Which I find kind of odd, since the satire isn't subtle at all.
What's your problem with the car tailfins? Sure, they don't actually make the car run any better, but they do look cool. It's a harsh world, and sometimes looking cool is the best we can hope for.

No, it's not the same situation at all. In this case, we're seeing attacks on people and organizations that had nothing to do with the cartoons in the first place. Their only offense is being Danish, or maybe just looking like they're Danish.
Absolutely wrong. If the cops have the right to search your car (which they do, but only in some cases), they wouldn't be asking for permission.

I agree. The only thing this would be really good for is deep-frying. Which then brings up the question: how does this mechanism improve upon existing designs for automatic deep-fryers? It's probably much more expensive and less durable than the old designs (most of which just use a thermocouple to control a heating element or a gas burner) and doesn't provide any new functionality.
And who was "chiming in"? The friend or Wozniak? Seriously, it's been a while since I've seen so much mangled syntax crammed into such a small space. Do I win a necklace if I can figure out what the hell this person's trying to say?
Isn't it possible to abuse UTF-8 domain names for activities such as cybersquatting? It's easy to mistake www.microsöft.com for www.microsoft.com.
It's worse than that. For example: there are several characters in the Cyrillic script which look exactly like Roman characters, like C, K, O, P, M, H... But of course they have different Unicode character values. So a malicious individual could register microsoft.com using a blend of Roman and Cyrillic characters, and it would look completely undistinguishable from the real thing. There are a number of ways to protect against that, but none of them are particularly good.
Eric Blair (George Orwell) started out life as a (rather low-ranking) member of the ruling class. After his service with the colonial police in Burma, he wanted no more of it, and became a vocal leftist and anti-imperialist. This stance is pretty obvious if you read any of his non-fiction writings. His disagreements with the other leftists of his day (most notably about the Soviet Union - see "Animal Farm") don't change that.
1984 is a satire on British upper middle class life in 1948
A lot of "1984" was based on post-war England, but I don't think it's accurate to say that it's just a satire of England. The political philosphy of that novel is pretty universal, and a lot of it still applies today. The trouble is, a lot of people take an overly literal view of what Orwell's laying down, and they miss the really important bits - like the use of language to shape thought patterns and maintain control over the population. Or the idea of a constant state of war - a war that neither side has any intention of "winning".
We want our features working and we want it working out of the box. We don't want to have to go through the problems of hiring a few developers, and a SLEW of testers.
Except in this case, one of the features that they require is support for an open document format, which MS refuses to provide. So they have to look at the alternatives.
One expense should never justify another expense
True. I was just trying to provide some perspective.
This was never about saving money, but about having a truly open format that isn't controlled by a single company. The only reason they're planning to switch to OpenOffice is because MS absolutely refuses to support the OpenDoc format; I bet that the costs associated with switching would cancel out the savings, anyway.
This is what open-source is all about: use the software for free, and if you want enhancements, you add them yourself, or hire someone to do it for you. And we're not talking about "ridiculous prices" here - just the salaries of a few developers. The Massachussetts government probably spends more than that just on office supplies.
I don't see what the problem is. Each box would be built exactly the same as before, except it wouldn't have a power supply unit - just a straight wire from the power socket. And the central power supply is just a big AC/DC converter - most EEs should already be familiar with those. There's not really any new technology here, it's just slightly re-arranged.

Why does Apple still want to control the hardware?
Off the top of my head: One, because they make a good profit on the hardware. Two, because the limited hardware choices simplify OS development, and allow them to make the overall package more reliable.
I've often heard it said that Apple has priced itself out of the market.
This is business, not sports. Just because you're not the top dog doesn't mean you "lost the game". Apple is a niche company in the PC market, and they seem pretty comfortable in that position. 3% marketshare (or whatever it is) doesn't sound like much, but don't forget, it's 3% of a very large number. Apple has been making shitloads of money for the last five years, and will continue to do so in the near future.

I tell you, it's a good thing we already won the War On Drugs. Otherwise we'd be fighting three wars concurrently.
