This is the exact sort of thing that makes me unable to stand atheists.
Science does not prove God exists, at least not right now. Science also "proved" that the sun orbited Earth and that Fire, Wind, Water, and Earth were elements that made up everything. What's to say what we know right now isn't completely wrong?
I'm not flaming or anything (though I'm sure it's gonna be modded so), that's just my opinion.
And just for the record, I'm a Buddhist.
Um, I'm a musician, and I support sharing mp3s. Artists get a miserably tiny cut of the CD pie. Come see us live, that's where we do make the money. Bear in mind I'm not supporting leeches - if you like the artist, you really should buy the CD, which is what I tell anyone on the subject, and a lot at least claim to. I do agree with your points on shareware - I have a lot of friends who download the free trials and crack them. I'll admit that I cracked software a few times when I was running Windows, but only with things like image editors that are just fuck-around toys (ie Fark Photoshop contests) as opposed to something that I'd need for work or would profit from.
Personally, I'd reccomend Debian if those are your two choices. My setup with Gentoo turned into literally an all-night affair of "ok, this is all configured. Let's go eat some pizza and play a couple dozen rounds of Twisted Metal before it gets done emerging", and even when we got it in a useable state, a lot of stuff didn't work. I switched to Debian testing after that (I had the setup for two weeks and never did get my sound working). This was about an hour and a half of work, and everything worked fine, and still does. The only thing that hasn't worked since the installation is that neither LiLO or Grub will boot my Windows partition (what a loss), though I can access the files just fine from Debian.
In conclusion...do yourself a favor and go with Debian.
The way Americans love their reality entertainment, it'll soar in theory. However, I doubt it goes far for one simple reason: nobody will have heard of it. Can't beat American Idol if nobody knows about it.
Hoo boy, 7.1 meg video file. Server meltdown in 5...4...3... Something tells me that this isn't gonna stop at a commandline. I can easily see it evolving into a GUI program. Hell, I'd work on it if I knew how to program and had a Domino's in my area. It'd also be cool to see this support the side-orders in the future. Dominos hot wings are pretty good (albeit they're not very hot).
My Karma experience is a bit mixed. Normally, I love it. The USB 2.0 won't work for some reason anymore (not a problem - I normally used the network interface anyway). Also, about three days ago I was in my car, and the tracks got all sorts of fucked up, it'll display one song and play another. I'm sure this isn't a big deal as to I'm going to delete the offending tracks and reupload them.
Overall though, the Karma's pretty intuitive. I'm not sure I'd still 100% reccomend it given the problems/gripes I've had, but it's still worth a serious look.
If I still had modpoints, I'd mod you up, mate.
I honestly thing that this is the course that the OSS community would take if this DRM bullshit continues: forming its own software and hardware that dosen't have meddling "we know better than you do" Trusted Computing crap. Sure, it'll work for the average user who only uses their computer to check stocks and e-mail Grandma. It's the people like Slashdotters who love tinkering with their system who will raise hell and break off to do their own thing. We can't really force Joe User to switch to a non-DRM computer, but what's it really matter if all he's doing is checking e-mail? It's not like Trusted Computing, as horrible as an idea it is, is raining fire and brimstone on him.
I have a Karma, and I couldn't be happier. It's never given me a problem, aside from one time it decided to rebuild the database and delete 100-some odd tracks, and even that was an exercise in plugging it back into the network and reuploading the songs. True, it's not as thin as the iPod (a friend of mine accuratly described it as 'like a brownie') and a bit heavier, but IMO it's superior. The ogg playback, the network interface, slick file manager, and good pricetag have all lead to my cherishing it. Nothing beats jamming to the Swingin' Utters and Mr. Scruff in study hall while doing calculus.
Because it keeps me amused in study hall.;) Seriously, though...this shows how much we've advanced. 100 years ago, you had to go out of your way to learn an insturment (such as a fiddle) to have music at all. Now, people have an mp3 player filled with any music they want on a whim. People can be listening to their own sort of "theme song" when they're in a certain mood. If you're bored and can't just go away (like my study hall plight), you can just flip on a song that reminds you of something that's happened or you want to happen, and slip away. It's a nice thing to be able to do.
What, a 12 year old girl can't use Linux? My 13 year old sister uses my Mandrake box whenever I'm not using it, and has most basic commands down and has mastered the KDE GUI. Apparently 'everyone should use Linux' does have a cutoff.
Could anyone truely pull this off? Most people would never dream of paying for e-mail. And what's to stop me from setting up my own mail server and sending it off?
Step 1: Charge for e-mail
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Profit
Security guards and video surveillance? Yeah, because everyone knows that gangstas are huge on their geekish activities. "Yo homie, I installed mah new Slackwares!" "Fo sheezy mah nigga!" It dosen't seem to me like it's the cafe's problem as much as anywhere in the city, whether it be malls, coffee shops, or parks. Do we need surveillance everywhere else as well to stop these "gang violences" and whatnot?
I guess that this all just circulates around the whole idea that Americans are doing everything to curb the problem except attacking the problem itself.

That's ok, I use AMD chips.
The Permission of the Beast!
75% of all statistics on Slashdot are made up on the spot.
"Please try again by pressing the refresh button in your browser." They're not making it any easier on themselves.
I'd join your boycott...but y'know, it's hard to boycott something you hated and never intended to watch in the first place.

To regurgitate another person's comment: ...run that program in a cron job.
Beats the cron setup for a webpage.
That is quite easily the best use of a cron job I've ever heard. Just make sure to turn it off if you plan to leave the house.

Firefox with a Google Toolbar does this well. Or just run it thought Babelfish if you want an All Your Base-ified translation.

This is a bit offtopic, but where does one go to get said beta copy? I'm a bit curious to see exactly what Dollar Bill is cooking up.

So that's why all the whiny angsty poetry on blogs looks the same...it IS the same!

I remember the attempted bunch of assholes bomb...good times, funny stuff.
The peanut is neither a pea, nor a nut. ...oh wait, it is a nut.
Gee, when MS gets their grubby hands on server records, they'll have fun suing the hell out of all the downloaders. Thanks!
