Its simple really. The US thinks that its the centre of the intellectual, entertainment, moral, religious and political universes to name a few. Actually, if you look at who is fucking up the planet with unbridled consumption and interference in the policies of other countries so that they can get their hands on resources, it's the US. Having said that I've met some very nice (and good) citizens of the US, its just that the values of the society in general suck big time. A society that "claims" to be Christian but is the biggest producer of porn of all sorts? Hey, there is something wrong there, and thats just one example.

This is not saying I like windows - I dont, but for gods sake, some of you self important nerds need to get into the real world of what the CONSUMER wants, not what you believe they should want. Interesting that this story only got a score of 2. The writer has it right. MS is so pervasive, that the ordinary user thinks it is the only way to "use" a computer. IE is the internet after all is it not? And, the less intelligent - or more technophobic - the user, the more likely they will be to resist change in my experience. The OSS community has to get into the real world and out of a foggy ivory tower. Give ordinary people what they want and they will "buy" it. Ordinary people want their software to look like MS software. They want it to operate like MS software. I have sympathy for the idealism of OSS communities, and I use FC on my machine at home by the way, but when I reflect on my colleagues at work and how they use their machines, I realise that they will in all likelyhood never even consider OSS solutions, even if you give them a disk, install it for them and spend hours re-assuring them and helping them understand how it works.
And besides which how will their children ( code for they in many cases ) play their computer games.

As a consumer that just wants the stuff I buy to work and work properly, it look like a good excuse to not "upgrade" and even to "switch" Actually I think that as long as a product works and works properly, most consumers will wait if they believe that the wait will deliver a superior product. There is a big defference between IP and patenting fragments of DNA. For one thing, IP is just that intellectual property - hence by definition has been INVENTED by someone. the gene fragment patent on the other hand does not cover invention or creation - it covers the patenting of something that already existed and was uncovered in gene research, so called "junk DNA". There is no good reason why CSIRO should not hold patents - the people there created the IP, CSIRO is owned by me (in part at least as an aussie) and the CSIRO - and hence I as a "shareholder" get some benefit, not least of which is that the royalties reduce my tax burden in supporting CSIRO. The company which patented the junk DNA should never have been able to do so, and nor, imho, should any company be able too patent something that is already there. the use of that junk DNA in a treatment of some sort? .... well thats a totally different issue and is an invention, so should be covered by IP patent

The old saying that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely seems appropriate when considering some of the business practices of MS. Because of their power in the marketplace they are able to get away with ignoring or modifying international standards to their own advantage - hence "forcing" other companies to do the same. I could go on re-hashing the arguments and wasting my time....... And, the monopoly gets slack in the end - oh of course this could never happen in the 21st century, cos they really have the needs of the consumer at heart. 2) I dont like the the way a lot of MS software assumes that you are a complete imbecile when you use it - for gods sake give us some credit for our inteligence. 3) I like to give the little guy a go, especially if his product or service is comparable to the big guy.
