They are trying to keep control. As soon as the artists realize they no longer need the RIAA, they will go directly through Apple's iTMS, or similar alternatives (as they are starting to). If its cheaper to buy a CD at the store, then people will probably go and buy the CD, stealing the sale from the online music stores.

I think its immoral and irresponsible to damper technology for everyone so that you can stay in power longer.

  14. Re:Need paper receipts on Maryland Electronic Voting Systems Found Vulnerable · · Score: 1

There was an interesting article in Yahoo News that talks about how NH is one of the few states left that still uses paper ballots. I also find it interesting that New Hampshire passed a law requiring a paper record of every ballot cast, effectively banning touch-screen election computers that don't produce such receipts.

As great as technology is, some things are just easier to do the old fashioned way. I understand that geeks always want to improve something that isn't broken, but sometimes we need to better evaluate benefits vs. consequences; especially when its the government in charge. If this were a private company enforcing a computerized only voting system - fine, nobody gets hurt if it screws up except the company itself. When the government puts something like this in place, ultimately the citizens using the system are hurt.

    To quote Kim du Toit:
The difference is that when private sector fucks up, they get hurt. When government fucks up, people get hurt.

  15. Re:Good (psychological element ) on Disney's Disposable DVDs Deemed Duds · · Score: 1

I'd disagree with your psychological theory (at least for Americans). We buy disposable items that have a permanent alternative all the time. Some examples that come to mind are cameras, silverware, mops (swiffer), batteries, pens, lighters - you get the idea. I haven't heard any complaints of being "ripped-off."

On all of the items you mentioned the consumer is in control of the rate at which it is used. For example, if I buy a disposable camera, batteries, etc, I can control (for the most part) how long that item will last. If I don't use my swiffer, it will be there for the next time; same with pens/batteries. In any of the cases, I can choose to extend the life of my product after I opened it by not using it. With these DVDs, once the item is opened, you are restricted by an arbitrary time frame set by the manufacturer. This is the same reason licensed MP3s failed and iTunes succeeded; with iTMS, customers own the music they purchased. With the alternatives, customers needed to continue paying fees, or they could no longer use them.

I also fail to see why Disney, of all companies, would push for this type of product. My little brother, like many young children, watch(es) childrens movies over and over again. I can remember one point where he would watch 101 Dalmations at least twice a day for 3 weeks straight until we decided to restrict TV usage. For an extra $3-5, why not purchase something without time restrictions and OWN the product. More adult films, however, have a certain sense of 'unique adverture' we can usually only capture once. After we watch the movie, we understand the plot and future watchings only lead us to bordem; childrens movies for some reason do not follow this pattern, as we can watch them repeatidly and still be entertained.

I still see this technology applicable in government/security situations. If the government wants to have sensitive data that will self-destruct after X days, this technology can guarantee its destruction at a set time. The problem of copying the data on the DVD still remains, and I do not know if it is possible to recover the data through other means after the disc has expired.

"And if we could get a monopoly on that (Helium-3), we wouldn't have to worry about the Saudis and we could basically tell everybody what the price of energy was going to be," said Pike.

This demonstrates complete arrogance by the US. It's one thing to think that to yourself and amoungst fellow cabinet members, but you don't go and say something like that to the f'ing reporters!

The thing that pisses me off more about this yahoo article is a statement made two paragraphs above:
Among companies that could cash in on Bush's space plans are Lockheed Martin Corp., Boeing Co. and Northrop Grumman Corp., which do big business with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as well as with the Pentagon (news - web sites).

To me, this basically means that we the American taxpayers are going to invest billions of dollars into developing a moon base and not see any return from it - the above companies will. It sounds a lot like GW's scam when he built the stadium for the Texas Rangers using taxpayers money and then cashed out for big personal gain - only this time he's using federal funds and screwing all of America.
