    Why would the departure of Steve Cook raise doubts about the future of an entire program? If that is the case, then NASA really needs to work on hiring and/or training more Program Managers.

    In my experience, they (the NASA personnel) worked just as hard and effectively as anyone I've since worked with in the private sector.

    One important difference - the contractors actually work while the GS-14s (and other grades) spend their time arguing with each other, taking breaks and long lunches, and changing their minds every five minutes.

    I'd rather work directly for a military officer in some godforsaken FOB in Durkadurkastan than a civilian GS in a safe, comfortable office in CONUS.

    Actually, the big move right now is to fixed price contracts. The Government found out that most of their COTR's are incapable of managing contracts.

    About 20 years ago my house mates and I all forgot to bring a TV set when we started a semester in college. For the first week, we were bitching about "what to do", by the third week, I had taken up racquetball and spent more time studying. By the end of the semester, I had lost weight, was in better shape, and my GPA went up. Each one of my house mates made similar improvements.

    Not everyone in the Air Force is a pilot or weapons officer. I know Air Force security personnel who had to "knock doors" in Iraq.

    You could just as easily prepare recruits by a program of gradual desensitization, eg. having them attack cardboard cutouts, then realistic 3D dummies, then live animals, then realistic animatronic dummies.

    I feel cheated! I only got to shoot at targets that looked only vaguely human.
    Live animals - what, bears wearing ushankas with little red star pins?
    Well, there were those speeches about the "Soviet Threat", but we already knew that totalitarian bullies are assholes.

    Apparently they can get away with it. They did in Somalia in 1993 and repeatedly in Afghanistan and Iraq from 2001 and 2003 onwards.

    I don't advocate "regime change" through outside force as a normal practice. The whole world would probably be happier if it did adopt Liberty, Rule of Law, Representative Government, etc. These aren't exclusively Western ideals or ideas, nor should only Westerners be the only ones to benefit.

    I don't see where Authoritarian or Anarchism ever effectively promoted Liberty, Freedom, or any other Liberal Western value. Authoritarian states always limit or deny these ideals and Anarchist states always fail to defend the citizenry against outside aggression.

    The sad part is that few care enough about Democracy, Liberty, and Freedom (add Western Liberal Tradition Value here) to pay higher prices for non-Chinese (or other Slave State) products. Of course, many care enough to endure hardship and risk life and limb in Iraq and Afghanistan to promote those same values (as they genuinely believe). Strange, isn't it?
