I feel very strongly about this issue but things have been really crazy lately and I don't have time. I will be write about it in my next post, which should be really soon!!!
The story also mentions the recall of Second Chance bulletproof vests that were made from Zylon, a material that degraded slowly when exposed to moisture
Still better than a material which degrades quickly, when exposed to bullets..
Fantastic! I would love to see that - give me anything other than press releases every few months saying this company or that has 'invented' e-Paper and noone actually doing anything with it.
The phrase "nenpi" is almost only purely used in reference to fuel consumption of cars. However I have seen it used in reference to physical fitness, so I think any jisho (dictionary) saying nenpi is purely measured in kilometers per liter is being too narrow in its definition. Nenpi is only ever used in reference to automobile fuel consumption and the dictionary definition given is fine as-is. The physical fitness usage you heard would have been them just using a well-known "car metaphor" to explain the body in an easy-to-understand way.
Well no one really teaches software design do they. You can go to school to learn to be a bridge builder and come out of it knowing all the exact specifications to build a bridge and probably design a fairly good bridge, or with a bit of creativity and some extra architectural skills a really cool bridge.
This is a good point. The biggest problem is people can't physically see software. If software was a phyiscal thing
I'm sure everyone would be shocked by how shonky and ugly it looks, and be much more demanding about it. But as things are, it's totally abstract and if the job/processing etc. gets done, then that's good enough. The question of whether it's done well, or is well designed can only be determined by other software developers.
I bet if a UFO did suddenly appear over the US and then land aI bet there would be absolute panic, and lots of scared people.
I think the only thing that would freak people in the US more would be if a UFO landed in the middle of, say, China, or some other country:)
we can tell today's youth that their music sux0rs compared to the stuff we had back in our day.
I have a 5 year old daughter now, and I certainly won't be telling her how much better the music was in the 80s..
On a tangent: At what age do people's musical tastes "fossilize"? I know my parents love their old stuff, but I find that
I still listen to and enjoy whatever the latest stuff is on the internet. I'm 33 now and can't see that same sort of "the old stuff was much better" mentality creeping in. Is it just a matter of time? Or has the internet and flow of information we have now changed how we age?
I don't know the specific technical reasons why IE7 has been delayed in Japan, but I have worked in Japan and with Japanese clients in the IT industry for 12 years and I can tell you that while American and western users might like to think that they
hold high standards for software quality, that is NOTHING compared to what Japanese companies and users expect. There is a tradition of service (at ridiculuos cost to the provider). If I was running a software company, I'd outsource all the QA work to Japan. That's how thorough and picky they are about small issues. I wouldn't be surprised if some IE7 issues which US and other users complained about but were basically willing to let go weren't raised as a red-flag-production-down-critical in the Japan and that was the reason for the delay.
fyi One other reason Australia wasn't in the world cup for 32 years was, of course, because they were cursed:

this is true btw. well, I'm not sure if it's the reason they weren't in the cup before, but these events did happen.
I came in late as far as hearing about this Duke Nukem Forever thing is concerned. Sure, I played the original Duke Nukem years ago and it was fun, but I'd never really thought about again until I came to Slashdot and saw the references to Duke Nuken Forever and how long it was taking, vapourware.. etc.
But I do have to ask : this whole situation isn't actually for real is it? I mean, surely the company realised the humour in a 'next-big-thing gaame that is never quite released', and is just saying they're working on it. I've always presumed it had just turned into a big in-joke in the gaming community and they were playing along.
Has there ever been any independant confirmation (from in-house developers etc) that they are really working on this game?
No, this isn't a troll. Just my reaction as someone who doesn't know the full history of this situation

Agreed. "In what respect" sounds like something generic a chatbot uses to pass a Turing test
Just tried Firefox 3.0b4: 67/100 IE 7 : ? / 100. It messed the screen up so badly I couldn't even see the result :)
I've always thought the USS Richard Nixon would have been a better name for a submarine that carries out covert wire tapping operations..
Amen!! %#&%$%n' Expert-exchange is right up there every time I google any technical/coding problem, no matter how obscure..
By reading this sentence you agree to sending me $10,000.
This of course will later evolve into the field known as 'Spasmodics'

>>All slashdotters should threaten to boycott Quantas until they give tech details of where The Penguin went wrong
Or at least just misspell it..
If I ever get my hands on a time machine, I won't travel 100 years into the future, I'll just go 5 years. THAT'S where all the technology is!
you're dead, Jim!
The body is normalizing even as we speak..

Instructions: 1. Vote 2. ? 3. Democracy! (oh, alright: and the winner PROFITS!)
Scrooge McDuck had enough money that he could swim in it!
But money can't buy taste. I mean, look at Richie Rich: A tuxedo jacket, shorts, and white boots?? Talk about worst dressed celebrity of the year

We'll have an amnesity period for Jedis to allow them turn in their light sabres, but after that we'll really have to get serious..
Watching something as boring golf on TV puts me in a state very similar to suspended animation anyway

This thread suggesting that viral marketing will become the norm is also a form of viral marketing
