How many of you have things that need to be discussed in the street, at a level loud enough to be picked up by these microphones that you would not want the government listening to? (Assuming they even recorded sounds, rather than levels). If you have the need to discuss somethings private - you don't do it in a public place or in a voice loud enough to hear outside your house. Take your IP to your meeting rooms at work - not to the street outside your house. As a London resident, I very much welcome this - it will stop my neighbour who puts speakers on her doorstep all through the summer and plays insanely loud music till 3-4am.

.. the gap is closing between the two in terms of usability and stability - in BOTH DIRECTIONS. this is hardly ever mentioned, but Windows has improved BIG TIME since 95/98/ME -> If you have used 2003 you will note the speed is much improved over older versions as is the stability. Now before you brand me a Redmond freak, I've been a linux user for 5 years (since I was 12) and will be forever, but I can hardly help noticing that everyone thinks Linux is gaining on Windows, when in fact Windows is also gaining on Linux just my 2 pence Tim
Surely coins randomness in values and the reason they make the best 1 out of 2 decision as it were, is because of these small variables, not many of which are under human control, to bring out a "good" result. This study has also been done by a statistician. Personally, a statistician talking about the requirement of Super-human strength to do a task, does not convince me as much as, say a Biologist. If we wanted to know really, we would need an expert panel from many fields. But then again, who cares?
sure.. it's good for the fat cats, but when is life not going to be? the points brought up in the article - All the computers are from Compaq. The basic software is from Microsoft. The phones are from Lucent. The air-conditioning is by Carrier, and even the bottled water is by Coke - wherever the offices are in the world these things will be provided by these companies or such like. The only people whose pockets are getting lined are the Fat Cat's, not Joe Geek who just got pushed out of a job.
This guy has certainly lost the plot. I am 17 years old, and I have been working on open source software for a while now. I would never consider closed source software as a preferred alternative to open source simply because once I have a program "out there" as it were, the program is going to be so improved vastly by people who have vastly more knowledge than me. There is always someone in the world who can do something that you did, better, and that's what OSS is, doesn't that guy get it? I think "Aidan" was actually talking about OSS rather than free per se software anyway.
Just my 2 pence

As a British guy, I hope we get similar things brought in in Britain soon.. SCO needs to be stopped once and for all, and this seems like a fine (excuse the pun) way to do it.
it does all that but it doesn't drive yet!?? but seriously, what use is a traffic monitoring system - if you live in an area REALLY hit by traffic (i live near Central London, UK), there is usually almost no way to avoid it! what's the use unless you're a long distance commuter, or want to decide whether to use subway/underground or car
Stress has existed down the ages!
Just because a study shows an association between technology and stress this does not mean much. Any decent statistics student will tell you that CORRELATION DOES NOT IMPLY CAUSATION. This is a simple fact, and one that is often overlooked.
How about testing these claims by gathering data on exploits that were written before - and using a hypothesis test, with a correlation analysis to check if there is any ASSOCIATION.
Then again - correlation does not imply causation.
no... you obviously haven't had a go at installing any of the "user friendly" distros anytime in the last oooo ummm 4 years? Redhat/Fedora has a great installer which is so easy to use.. but by far the winner has to be Mandrake whose isntallation makes Windows look like Slackware 4.0.. Linux is ready for the desktop - the desktop just isn't ready for linux.
what money would a newspaper make from giving their whole content for free on the net - it has been proved that advertising on websites is certainly not the best method of advertising available! so obviously as paper gets less and less popular, they are going to have to move to online editions almost exclusively and why not make people pay for the latest news - maybe it's not right from the consumers point of view, but as a business it's all the newspapers can do!

quantum computers are still, and will be, a very very long way off. it is not enough to say that one single development will speed their coming, rather one obstacle will be replaced by another - sod's law
..Indians naturally have a very good hand on medical and mathematical fields. Sri Lankans and indians have all along (genetically?) been good at Maths and Science based subjects. Many world class mathematicians were from India most notablly Ramanujan.. so it is no wonder that these fields are going to India. Don't think that going to India for your operations will be worse than getting an operation in a top hospital, since it is likely that the people doing your operation would be at least as proficient, if not more, than the consultants at our top hospitials. I think we in the western world can often look down on the east due to it's poverty and not appreciate the great minds that these people have.. what do you think?
I'm allergic to flames!!!
the figures are amazing but i'm so sad to ssee what has happened to lego in the lsat few years - i remember hwen i was a kid you had to build everything now everything comes built for you!!! you get a lego boat pack and you just fix together one side of the boat and the other and voila.. its no fair.. i love what this guy has done tho and his creativity he should make big size models of LOTR stuff! cool!
..I think the idea is extremely novel! however, i don't think it will work simply because of the measurability of "good things". ie. in software we can always pick, and recommend, Mozilla over IE., not only cos it is open source, but because it is better security wise. however how do you tell someone that "OpenCoke" is better than Coca-cola, can this be done? if it tasted as good and didn't rot your teeth i guess so.. heh, but i dont think prices can be cut - and freeness is one of the big drawing factors to OS/GPL products...
what do you think?
by the way, i'm allergic to flames!

There seems to be varying claims on the size of this code. Geeknews claimed it was 660 mb of "around 30-40gb", whereas another news source claimed that it was "around 13.5 million lines out of 30-50 million lines" can anyone prove either of these theories?
Cheers.. Tim
Thank you. Who is going to spend money on something that they neither want nor need? Not money they can afford either.

Westminster is a city of its own.
I dont think that's true -- ie. look at it like this
Windows Linux
Usable +--Unusable
Insecure--+ Secure

Matrix was clearly ripped off Ghost in the Shell.. so will we soon get a new matrix sequel ripped off innocence... i wonder?
Isn't this what Armageddon was all about?? Defending the earth from asteroids with mad men....

Things go on inside tech-support centers?!? I thought they just put everyone on hold!

e-cards don't serve a purpose.. they are free, so "it's the thought" doesn't hit home with anyone relaly. get rid of them.. save society!
