  1. How many programmer did we have on Where Do All of the Old Programmers Go? · · Score: 0

Pre 1985, how many programmer did we have, if we compare it to the number today it would be negligible. So, there is no point even trying to find out what happened to the 40+ aged folks. I guess, they must be nejoying an early retirement or would have made enough money to setup their own businesses.

  5. Brain Gain for Google though on Google and Yahoo Creating Brain Drain? · · Score: 0

If there is a serious _Bran Drain_ then all those folks in Google are the most intelligent programmers in the whole world then the rest are all retards. Corrollary: If all the programmers on earth are retards except the ones in google then google cannot grow or their growth will be negligible. If you say you don't have to constantly hire intelligent people to grow then google has to stop hiring at some point, when is that ? I don't hear of anybody leaving Google

I feel having too many intelligent programmers need not necessarily be the best setup. At some point Google will crash and you can see the reverse Brain Drain. All grades of programmer be it A, B, C... are required by company at point of time, no one can take sole possession of all the A grade programmers, which is otherwise monopoly and attracts an Anti-Trust suit.

Joel-On-Software if I remember right had an article justifying that Attractive Work env. + Best Mind = Success. This is not always true, how practical is to find the best mind always. otherwise, will you put your plans on hold until you find the best minds. In fact the notion of grading programmers as A/B/C..itself doesn't make any sense for there isn't a single method to quantitatively differentiate a good and a programmer.

  6. totalitarianism Personified ! on Longhorn to Require Monitor-Based DRM · · Score: 0

I see this as history repeating itself in a way. Apple is now showing some tendency in freeing itself from a restricted hardware environment. While Microsoft wants to get into more restricted hardware environment. I just wonder how two companies that more or less in the same business have two completely orthogonal objectives.

While it gives a feeling that Apple is making the right move, it also makes us all think why MIcrosoft is doing this. Why MS is more focused on game-console products. Is it because they foresee a future of just consoles that would replace PCs ? Eventually would mean that Apple would capture all the PC market.

It was OS first then came productivity tools, then came the mouse, then the game console now display units... what next? The World ?

With all these OS vendors pairing up with processor vendors, I feel AMD would miss the bus if it doesn't seriously think about wooing MS. Intel taking sides now will cause serious damage, we know how Apple works, they might want a specific processor from Intel tailor made for their requirements and will take care of the rest of the packaging. This means Intel will be restricted to Apple for business if it ignores MS. Intel is in for serious trouble soon. Wintel has been a formidable combination, if Intel ignores MS it stands to loose and AMD stands to gain. I personally want to see AMD emerging on top Intel, Intel has seriously run out of ideas and are now trying to save their face by attracting some media attention. IA64 was a super dooper flop and AMD capitalized on that. On one side IBM is contented with its CELL and has found a niche market in term gaming consoles. All said and done PPC is going to be history soon, so think twice before you junk your old MAC :-)

This is my take: construction particularly, house construction techniques and architecture have evolved over millions of year. Programming is something that perhaps was not even born until early 20th century. It makes sense to take ideas from construction than vice-versa. Moreover, programming is different from designing. The desing philosophy for software can be analgous to design philosophy in cosntructions. "Desing of everyday things" by Donald Norman will give a better idea as to how we can identify patterns from the desings that already exists and use them in software engineering. I will certainly be moded 1 or even less than that for not being funny. Let me try, this is like asking "MS to desing cars for GM"

ok, it's a democratic republic. The president plays a rather ceremonial role, while, the prime minister holds the executive powers. Unlike the US there are more than 2 large parties that compete to form the government. The point I was trying to drive was that the technological advancement that it boasts of are not that distinct that it makes china stand out. It is also available in a country like India which, has always been regarded as technologically behind when compared to other developing countries. Bush turning out to a bad choice, yes, it is highly subjective and debatable, but majority of the people in the US didn't feel it that way. It could be due to various reasons. People did not know republican's mandate. People attach more weightage to counter terrorism issues than to economic reforms. People are confused; loss of jobs, economic slow down and terrorist threats. Which is important ? India has it's problems in electing a representative. There is high level of corruption and bureaucracy no matter which party comes into power. The only difference is that people have a lot of options to choose and pick. It is quite a task to oraganise the elections in country with more than a billion people. The fact that such state/federal structure has been existing for 50 years despite the vast diversity itself is something commendable. China; yes it has it pluses. I admit that communism and socialism is something that has it advantages and disadvantages. The right mix of both is required, a completely democratic decentralized environment becomes very difficult to handle, particularly the law and order aspects. India a communist party can be democratically elected. Nothing wrong in adopting communist ideology but people should be able to interfere when things get out of hand. China imposes Martial Law as it pleases. It's good when used in situations when law and order deteriorates. But we should not forget how it has been exploited. China is undoubtedy the world's largest totalitarian regime, a regime that has presided over the genocide of Tibet, a regime that, according to Amnesty International, executes 2,000 of its citizens annually, a regime that threatens to invade the democratic sovereign state of Taiwan. China executes more of its citizens than the rest of the world combined. President Hu Jintao was communist party secretary in Tibet when martial law was imposed there in 1989. From the time its troops swarmed into Tibet on October 7, 1950 the Chinese government began the systematic genocide of the Tibetan people. Chinese terror in Tibet reached its peak during the cultural revolution when all religious institutions were banned, temples demolished and monks and nuns murdered. China is readying itself for a surprise attack against Taiwan that would aim to be so short and sharp the US would not even have a chance to intervene, warns the US Department of Defence in its annual review of China's military capacity, released in August 2003. China has claimed Taiwan as its territory and threatens to take it by force if Taipei declares independence. This is an amazing propaganda spin by the Chinese. Taiwan is an independent sovereign state with a democratically elected government while China is a one-party totalitarian regime. The notion of "free world" is not imaginary it is very much true. Imagine if such a totalitarian regime fall into wrong hands. Is there a provision for representation? and calling the world for help would cause mmore destruction. Chinese visa processing is quick, so what ? what's the kind of traffic are we talking here. It is only recently that we seeing an increase in chinese immigration. US has a lot of stuff at stake ? terrosism being the major issue they are becoming paranoid on every aspect of immigration. It's living under fear, fear which demands strict and stringent immigration policies. I am sure couple of terrorist attacks on china and china will vritually shut its doors to the world. We can debate about this for ages and get nowhere. The bottom line China is no better than India and I don't know much to comment about the US - from what I've seen, american policts/policies = Corporate Lobbying.
