Probably not. I talked to a mod in their IRC channel and he said the site has around 500,000 users now. It went up to that from around 40,000 after Suprnova shut down.
But that's where the education part comes in. I agree that more of that is needed. With cars, problems are easy to recognize because you can hear or see that something is wrong. With spam, it happens in the background so most people aren't aware. Unless M$ builds something into the operating system that makes it easy to spot security problems, it's going to be hard to educate everyone.
Heck, even that probably wouldn't work. I can see it now, a window pops up saying:
ALERT!
"You currently have port 25 open and your outgoing data rate is 1.2 mbps on that port. Are you sure this is what you want?
In three days this has gone from 1/233 chance, to 1/45, to 1/56,000. How can there be so wide of a spread over such a small time interval if the method being used to estimate this is at all reliable? I could see how small trajectory changes in the asteroid would vary the predictions a lot if it were closer, but this is still 30+ years away.
What's to say tomorrow won't be 1/1? How is this latest measurement the final word that there is no threat?
When I first heard about it they were only for M$ stuff. I guess they changed it since then. But even in that case I still say this doesn't prove everyone likes M$.
It could have been a convenience thing (takes too much time to make it worth getting a small discount on something. Or there could have been privacy concerns (some people might not want to submit their name/address/phone/et al to M$.
Did it ever occur to anyone that what this settlement offers is vouchers to purchase more M$ software.
Given that, did it ever occur to anyone that people who don't like M$ might not want more M$ software?
Given that, did it ever occur to anyone that a relatively few number of people taking advantage of a chance to get free M$ software might indicate a low demand for more M$ software.
Saying the response rate of this settlement is due to "popularity of M$ with consumers" is horribly bastardized logic.
That the/. summary would actually reflect the same interpretation, or dare I say it, even the factual content of the article.

Dear Mr. Mcbride,
It has come to my attention that you are attempting to use your phony IP claims as support for attempting legal action against our company. Unfortunately it has been revealed that your business model has some flaws which we can not overlook. At the present moment it seems that you are employing the following strategy in pursuing this threat against us:
1. Claim to own Linux 2. ??? 3. Profit!
But, if I may point out sir, that particular strategy was shown to be ineffectual as a vehicle for revenue generation a while ago. Furthermore, and as Kyle pointed out, the particular Gnome who first came up with that strategy was not operating on all intellectual cylinders at the time. Consequently, I would advise you to reconsider the logic of continuing to pursue this plan of action in the future.
Sincerely yours, Company X
P.S. If you still want to sue us, feel free to try because our legal department is quite bored right now and they could use an easy win. It seems they have not seen anywhere near as much action as our US subsidiary recently.
I could understand how that might be a valid complaint if someone made a track exactly 4:33 long that was silent, but I don't think Cage has copyright over all silent tracks. You can't copyright nothing in that sense.
I know plenty of CDs besides Cage's that have silent tracks of varying lengths. Are they all infringing too?

Yes but the FS is starting to go the way of the FA as far as the number of actual readers is concerned.
I admit to occasionally falling victim to this unfortunate disease myself. Sometimes I only read the headline, and with some of the YRO ones that take up nearly the whole width of my 1280px wide monitor, sometimes I can't even get through all of that.

Since I submitted this they updated the site and have now have received $9,940 in donations.
Also, they posted an image of the of the complaint they were served with here.
Firewalling port 80 is a horrible solution.
There are plenty of reasons why any business might need to access sites that aren't regularly used.
Is anyone else freaking out from Rob's ugly mug on that ad?
Yes but Darwin alone is not very different from any other *nix. It is not the "ideal OS" that OS X is.
i.e. is it strong enough to melt metal?
There's nothing I've put on craigslist that I would have put in a newspaper.
Ah, so that was you who put the add up saying he wanted a hairy old man to pound his ass now.

Well, yeah.
But if she doesn't know how to harden a system then someone else will have to do it for her at least the first time.
Do you fix everything in your car (no matter how non-trivial) that breaks? No, you take it to a mechanic.
Educating people about securing their systems is one thing, but expecting everyone to become a security expert is quite another.
Or better yet, harden it so she can't be compromised again when she turns it back on.

Maybe you should try exercising the "sarcastic humor" portion of your thoughts more. ;)
With this kind of ultra portable power source, wouldn't it be easier to operate more destructive equipment in the field?
I mean to me this sounds almost as dangerous as amateur rockets. Thank goodness the ATF already banned those.

I believe the technical term for OS X updates is "snappier."
Also according to the summary, Einstein.
