This reminds me of an interview I saw one with some BASE jumpers. They said that when jumping off microwave towers, you can't hang around on top very long becuase you can feel your fillings heat up.
b - bring it back (maybe if the transporter survives the trip)
I believe that until the Colombia crash, NASA had planned on bringing HST back onboard a shuttle. Unfortunately, Colombia was the only orbiter still setup to carry the HST in the cargo bay. The other three orbiters have ISS docking modules in the cargo hold and don't have room for Hubble.
What's X10? And what are these Pop-Under thingies that are mentioned. Am I missing out on part of the Internet or something. Maybe its a Microsoft thing. I use mozilla now, would I get these X10 Pop-Under things it I switched to Internet Explorer.
There IS a reason, but its a high cost setup. The Quadro FX 3000 can do Dual DVI at 1600x1200 on each screen. Very few cards can do dual DVI at this resolution. In fact the only other one I know of is the Quadro4 XGL 900 (which I use to drive my viewsonic vp201mb LCDs). Many high end game cards can now do insane dual monitor resolutions, but only dual analog is supported; or if they do support dual dvi, they only support it at 1280x1024. I think the Matrox Parahelia can do Dual DVI @ 1600x1200, but I bet UT2k3 doesn't run as well as on my Quadro. And with 3200 pixels of width, you can set a nice high field of view.
Hey, don't laugh. We had a squrrel take out power in half our town (Missoula, Montana, USA) because he decided to jump into a transformer at a power substation. There was another time in early 1995 when a beaver bit through the only fiber going out of town and cut the entire town off from the Internet.
I believe that before 1991 (or 1992) works had to be explicity declared and registered as copyrighted to get protection. Changes in law (or rulings, I can't remember which), made all created worked copyrighted by default so that copyright registration was no longer required.
note: this is all dredged up from memory and may be grossly inaccurate.
Many deep sea creatures don't actually require a pressurized environment. They can life at surface pressure. But they tend to be very sensitive to temp (need cold), light (its dark down there), and oxygen level.

I hope OpenBSD has gotten easier to use and install. Its not for the faint of heard. Last time I used it (2.something) post install configuration was non existant. it was like:

I can vi ascii files, but getting X running was an absolute chore, it was reminiscent of Slackware back in the 1.4 kernel days.
The Land NPP algorithm was developed at the NTSG at the University of Montana. I am the Sys Admin for this group.
We developed the software to do the Gross and Net primary productivity calculations (as well as some others), but the main production runs are done at the Goddard Space Flight Center in a room full of SGI Origin servers. Our development environment consists of several smallish linux beowulf clusters (32x1Ghz P3), a few Althon MP boxes, some old AIX dev boxes, and one SGI Oxygen for nasa code certification. Our largest resource is disk space, we have about 12TB of capacity. Keep in mind that this is just for algorithm development and testing. Goddard's production facility is huge, but that's becuase they are producing tons of other data products as well including all the land, ocean, and atmospheric products off of both the Terra and Aqua Satellites. This land productivity data (MOD17 in nasa speak) is derived in part from the MODIS sensor on Terra.
Both of these satellites are in sun syncronous polar orbits meaning that they come down over the earth's day side. This is because many of the sensors (like MODIS) are passive. Terra is the 'AM' satellite, it crosses the equator about mid morning local time, and Aqua being the 'PM' satellite crosses in the afternoon. The reason for this is because there is a significance in AM and PM cloud cover. Cloud cover is difficult to correct for (in fact with MODIS, sometimes you can't correct).

I have a paranoid worry that North Korea, or someone else who doesn't like US spy sattelites overhead is going to launch a rocket load of gravel into low earth orbit.
If someone put 1000 pounds of gravel into orbit, it would destroy the usefulness of space and trap us on this planet. Yeah we would still have stuff in geo-stat, but we'd have a lot of trouble getting anything new up there.
Maybe I just need to calm down and have some more coffee.
Are you using Nick Sayer's hack on AppleAirPort2.kext or some other 802.11g driver?
No, I'm just using the stock setup on the powerbook. Although at home I connect the 11g powerbook to an 11b linksys ap, and only 3 of the channels (9-11) work. But I'm fairly certain that it is an interference issue and not a b/g compatibility issue.

I have a Linksys 11g Access Point. There are about 7 11b users (mostly linksys pc cards and usb adapters). I use a powerbook (12inch) with the 11g card, and everything seems to play nice in that network. The powerbook always connects at 54, though the acctual throughput never gets close to that (I test with iperf). The 11b clients don't seem to affect the 11g client.

As far as I can tell, only the amatur wimps using http think that ftp is a crumbling legacy protocol full of security holes.
I think FTP got a bad name security wise because of wu-ftpd, which is known for its long and glorious tradition of remote root exploits.
I have to use FTP every single day, but mostly for big data transfers. Proftpd has served me well.
