Well, I am by no means what-so-ever a Blender or 3D Modeling expert. But I learned to use Blender and I could argue that other 3D programs are annoying because they don't have the same sort of GUI as the tool I learned... the other tools have similar GUIs but does that mean all of those GUIs are better, or they are all worse?
Did you sit through the tutorials first? I found them quite easy to follow and VERY helpful.
"its UI and methodology are so vastly different to everything else out there that I doubt it'll replace the big boys anytime soon"
When I first starting playing around with it I nearly made the mistake of instantly dismissing it because, well, frankly, its GUI looks terribly confusing. After sitting through a tutorial for an hour everything made sense and it was exceedingly fast to work with. I think most people experience the same thing using Blender.
The point is that they were successful - because they introduced a whole new market for games. Yes some females already liked PS games, but the majority would have never thought of buying a PS before Sing Star and the other games come out. They really are popular here with female folk.
Mod parent up - of course people are buying PS3's because it is a Blu-Ray player!
Think about it, would you buy a standalone BluRay player or a PS3? From what I have seen in New Zealand the standalone players are much the same price as the PS3!!!
Wow, the playstation add ons did really well in New Zealand. Some brought a whole lot of females (some typically not game players) into the playstation fan club, specifically, sing star, the eye toy and buzz.
And I have to say, I am a big fan of Guitar Hero:D.
OMG! Someone supporting Sony and BR! I was beginning to think I was the only one left!
Yes, Sony has done some dumb things, but come on - we are comparing them to MS. Personally I would prefer it if the even less evil Sega or Atari came back into the console biz, but for now my money is with Sony mainly because their hardware is superior. IMHO, when it comes to BR vs HD-DVD there really isn't any question BR is superior, at least in these early days of the tech.
I read the article and go, 'pffft they are going to melt so what', when I should really be going 'WOW! Holly Shit, this is massive!!'.
I think that with all of the 'end is nigh' press releases I am some what desensitized to it all, I can no longer be bothered deciphering what may or may not be feasible!
Ummm, vice-versa. PS2 has access to many fun and kooky games you can't get on Nintendo, and it is cheaper and about the same power as the Wii - sorry your point was? : ).
All the Wii has is one remote - the PS2 has Mics, Eyetoy, Guitars, and I think there is even a gold sim game out there. To me this bodes well for the PS3, Sony still has some very original game developers on their side. Different strokes for different strokes, but the Wii still hasn't sold me anyway. Sorry, I know I won't get more than 1 for this post being 'anti Wii' and all : ).
Everyone rants and raves about the Wii remote, and how original it is, and how great Nintendo are for doing something so original, and, well kooky.
I wish to enlighten people here - the Wii won't be much more powerful than the PS2, and the PS2 already has loads of fun and kooky games. Look at Sing Star, Buzz, and my personal favourite, Guitar Hero. So tell me again, why would I go out and buy a Wii?
"Now this is perfectly safe from SQL injection. Anyone who has done real web programming knows all about this and knows that you need to deal with this sort of thing regardless of what language you're using."
Point taken, in that a lot of web scripting languages you have to be careful with SQL injection - but careful with your statement, I do 'real web programming' and do not have to worry about this per say, as I am using a full MVC framework (struts). If you are truely seperating the 'V' from the 'M' and the 'C', then the web page should never have access to raw SQL. Granted for small apps a MVC can _possibly_ be overkill.
Consider yourself lucky, $90 USD is $148 New Zealand Dollars!
Thankfully it doesn't quite work like that, most new release games here are actually around $100. I remember paying $120 for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the sega master system! Given all of the developers and artists it takes to make games these days, I am amazed games aren't more expensive, I guess demand has risen keeping prices down? Either way I am glad they have kept down unitl now at least!
I always wanted to be a game developer, but with the decrease in return margin developers pay and companies like EA pushing developers to breaking point with riduclous hours and deadlines I am glad I never went down that path:). Maybe game developers would get payed more with high game costs? LOL, somehow don't think that's where the money will go...
I agree with you, only it's not that straight forward unfortunately. People are to quick to shoot down Java j2ee before they have actually learnt how to use it succesfully - they make a hash of their first website and move on without giving it a proper chance.
The problem is that most people don't have time to learn it succesfully AND also learn more than a couple of other languages succesfully, and in depth, so that they can make their own judgement. You have to really rely on what others experiences have been, or just choose a techonology you like the sound of and learn it inside out:).
"The code will be way cleaner because Ruby is a better designed language than either Java or PHP"
Okay, I admit that I don't know Ruby from a bar of soap - but I find it extremely hard to believe that it is a better designed language than Java.
If you mean that Java is hard to write web applications in, then yes, I admit there is a steep learning curve, but as a J2EE developer I can tell you that the last site I setup it took me more time to sort out the layout with style sheets than writing all of the ORM's in Hibernate!:). Admitidly it was a small website with only a handful of tables, but that just goes to show that it can be quick using Java tecnologies for any size site.
I would really like to know what in particular makes Ruby a better designed language, honest question, not flamebait! I am always open to new technologies, but what in particular would make me want to try RoR over other new 'web languages'? No one seems to say why it is so great other than 'it's faster to develop in' or 'it just is':), but why? excluding the j2ee learning curve of course.
Sad but true:( - it just really, REALLY, bugs me when management does things like that!
I don't understand how they think it's there place - any management staff out there want to shed light on this? Of course not because they won't be reading the 'developers' section of Slashdot!
(Gratefully prooved wrong!)

I have a certain fondness for PHP as it's the first web based scripting language I used - but I think you will find that creating a large, complex, and scalable application with a web front end will be much easier, and more robust if done so in Java (them fighting words I know!).
This isn't to say writing web apps in Java is easy. Writing entity beans, and even session beans can be a headache and Java can be made unmaintainable if not careful. i.e. session beans _can_ be made very unmaintainable (if used inapropriatly).
This isn't to say LAMP, in particular PHP doesn't have it's place. I think it is a much better solution for small to medium sized shop front type websites for example. i.e. assign right tool to the problem, they both have there use.

If management are calling shots, and telling you what architecture to use then may I kindly suggest you look elsewhere for a job! Seriously tho, management should not need to micro manage like that, it is one thing that gets on my nerves! Leave it for the techies!:-)
But Raid 1 or 5 is what I was going to use for my (home) backup box. Do I now need a backup of that as well, ouch, my wallet is starting to hurt :).

An even better word: Sex.

Just to be pedantic, Buzz has 3 games now.

Simple solution - put the age up for the army...

They just need giant 3D printers - or maybe an enlarging ray instead... :D
American and international soldiers are doing a good job in Iraq, no one is arguing with that. It is just the cause that is, at least, iffy.
For those interested, watch this video from another soldier who has finished his service, he has a different POV to say the least.

So this is like a Cyber Cafe, only you have to pay for the hardware as well?
