Eh, I'm lucky enough to have a comfortable income, so yeah, I pay a good bit. But then, I get a top-notch highway system, a federally insured system of banks, police and fire protection, my food and water are relatively safe, my workplace is held up to a minimum saftey requirement... All in all I think I am getting a pretty good deal. If we had all the money back that we've flushed down the Iraq toilet, who knows what all nifty stuff I'd be getting for my investment in this nation?

Thank you!!
I finally acquiesced and played the new Metroid game, which my Wii-apologist friend assured me was the pinnacle of interface design for the system. I couldn't play it for more than about 4 minutes without my hands starting to ache, but okay, fine, I'm not used to the Wii.
Then I watched him try to throw the grapple line to pull doors open. He got it to work about one out of four tries. >_
ALL THAT SAID... the bowling and golf games are tight. =)
I doubt I'm the first person to come up with this, but I've been saying for years that the ballot should be a list of names and a list of offices with blanks by them, in random order. You write in the name you want next to the office you want them for. Thus, without having to invalidate a single ballot you insure that all the votes that "count" come from people who at least have the wherewithal to know who is running for what.
For a more aggressive means of filtration, just remove the list of names...
Well, this won't make the battery last longer on one discharge cycle; it'll make it last for a greater number of charge/discharge cycles, and longer overall.
To make the battery last longer on a charge, you're already on the right track with powertop.

But how is that even a useful comparison? We're failing, in my opinion, to live up to our own ideals. Why is it even worth _mentioning_ that there are places that fail even more dramatically to live up to our ideals?
I hear what you're saying, but I don't understand your reasons for saying it.

Forgive me for not having an orgasm of patriotism at the revelation that we're not the single most oppressive regime in the world. Lowering the bar much?

It is for me. I recognize I'm in the minority in that regard. I don't much care.

-nod- And in most cases they lose my business by doing so. Doesn't matter much as long as it's just me. Maybe some day there'll be enough people who do care that it will make financial sense to support us. Maybe it won't. -shrug-

No, I wouldn't be "happy" until they provided all the code and specification data so that anyone who cared to could develop their own software to interface with the device in any way they wanted on any platform they wanted.
Take note; I don't mean to suggest they owe me anything, or anyone else. I'm merely describing the ideal against which I will evaluate their products when considering a purchasing decision. Very few products or vendors meet that ideal, so most of my purchases involve finding the vendor offering the closest to that ideal, or doing without the product when I can and there are no good vendors.
> Well thats not good, they should make that application open source too. So they > go and develop the TPL (TomTom public license) and people take that apart and > bitch that its no good and evil and why don't they just use the GPL.
Yeah, it's almost as if we prefer to shop with vendors that offer good support to their customers up front, rather than having to scratch and claw and wail to get even a pittance. How silly of us.
Most of the posts here are skewing condemnatory of this goofball policy, and I agree. However, maybe there's a bright side. If the playerbase actually go through this verification process (big if), it would offer a rare opportunity to observe macroscopic differences in how men and women behave in MMOs. Do women tend to tank less and heal more? Do they tend to cluster together in all-female guilds? etc.

So just put a chaingun on all 3 surfaces and make sure the ammunition feed can handle being inverted. What's the problem?

The word you're looking for is "capitalism".
I'll leave it up to you to judge whether that's a good or bad thing.

It's difficult to convey tone through this medium, so please accept my assurance that the following is intended as a genuine query and not to belittle you or your position.
Why is it that you desire/demand special treatment from your coworkers? I always understood the ideal was to be accepted as equals?

Would I give up some of my money to support a sensible plan to improve the overall standard of living in my nation? You betcha! Voila une liberal!
I like "dontslimemebro" =)

Ummmmm... they do.

Okay, I'll bite. Why on earth would you do that?
Mmmmmmm.... Ally Sheedy.

Although it's not merged yet, Thinkpad owners should also check out this project:
http://tpctl.sourceforge.net/
Using the tp_smapi driver I can, among other things, clamp my battery charger to
stop at 70%, which makes the battery last a _lot_ longer. =)

Thus the American corporate approach: do your damnedest to make sure there are no alternatives.
