I know we are all excited about the Halflife 2 Preloads that are sitting on our computers, but chances are that for every "Complete" gigabyte of the preload there will be 100 Megs of patching to be done. Just look at the current state of CS:Source, it is pathetic.

...for the name. I can remember not too long ago 3Com ethernet products being as much as 10x the price of any other competitor. Granted the fact that 3Com builds it's own chips and has pioneered some amazing tech, but that alone it seems isn't enough these days.

I also remember a time when Telus was in the process of dumping 3Com ADSL modems for DLink of all companies, because DLink made a better business case (read better price) for a product that was 99.9% as reliable as the 3Com product.

So to sum it all up I think that 3Com sort of let things get away by simply not keeping up with the economy of computing, not the raw technology. They still have all kinds of respect in the industry, they just have to re-learn how to sell themselves.

  7. I hate to say it but..... on Reasonable Salary for Entry Level Programmers? · · Score: 2, Interesting
... you have entered a field that, at least in my area, is seeing an unsustainable influx of skilled workers. What this means is that there are too many people available, but not enough jobs. A very good (and frightening) portion of said workers end up working part time and minimum wage jobs while they work on getting into a permanent entry level position doing something that pays (and not necessarily what they think they were trained to do).

For example, I have a friend who has just finished a degree in computer science, and to his own credit is somewhat of a prodigy. He has some (small, but some) social skills, and is capable of holding jobs. Now even with all the things he has going for him he is still in a saturated working environment, where he ends up not developing software but instead fixing internet connections for less learned persons. Is this a suitable use of his skills? I would say no.

So to end this post I would say you pretty much have to take what you can get these days, and work your way up in a big way. The other option (as I have chosen to exploit) is always self employment. At least with self employment you can guarantee that if you work hard you will actually get paid more.

I think that there, perhaps, should be a strict limit on how many different types of distractions a driver can be legally exposed to before it is no longer their fault when they crash. This could be a sort of self solving problem, whereby advertisers will not advertise in high accident locations due to legislation saying that they are in fact responsible for the accidents in said locations.

I also happen to agree very strongly with the school of thought that DVD players in Vehicles should not have screens in a location visible to the driver, PERIOD. There should not even be a discussion on this, it is just stupid. Would you put a strobe light on your steering wheel and drive at night with it on? Probably not, but I guarantee that there is someone out there stupid enough to try it.

At any rate, there has to be a limit imposed on some of this at some point in the near future. It is a proven fact that aboslutely no profit driven business will regulate themselves at the cost of the bottom line, whether it means indirectly causing death in the mean time or not.
