  1. One possible future on Shrek 2 How-To · · Score: 1, Insightful

As 3D begins to produce photo-realistic humans at low cost, I expect large-scale 3D pornography to hit the market. Photo-realistic tentacle porn anyone? Impossibly large wangs and breasts? You know this stuff would be a huge hit, IF it looks good enough.

  2. The new business model on Microsoft Behind $12M Opera Settlement · · Score: 5, Funny

  4. Poor G5 on Worst Explanation From Tech Support? · · Score: 1

I was checking out a Mac forum when the very first G5's were shipping. This guy posts a message like "I just got my new G5 today. I was installing a PCI card and the screwdriver slipped and scratched the mobo. Now the computer won't start up, what should I do?" There were a long list of suggestions, soldiering wire across the traces, shipping it back to Apple as DOA, etc. Buried way down was this "Shoot yourself in the face" The worst thing was, the card wasn't PCI-X compliant, and wouldn't work anyway.

  5. Getting WAY off topic here on Can Star Wars Episode III Be Saved? · · Score: 1

For those wondering what the whole Rollins thing is about, he was the frontman for the classic punk band Black Flag for a while. If you like hardcore music, find a copy of the song "Society's Tease" from the album In My Head. Powerful stuff.

  6. Interesting on Nanobacteria Discovered? · · Score: 2, Insightful

A Discover magazine article talked about the recent dicovery that 1/3 of all life on Earth is methane creating or consuming bacteria beneath the ocean floor. Now we find a new type of life. Anyone else get the impression that we don't know s**t?

  7. Re:Wear a helmet on Bicycling Science, Third Edition · · Score: 0

In some areas here in Florida, cyclists will call you an "organ donor" if you ride without a helmet. Of course, this is the same place I've seen people airlifted out.

  8. smoothy on Hybrid Cars Don't Live Up to Mileage Claims · · Score: 0

Agreed. Smooth driving is the key for greater fuel efficiency with these cars. Gently braking to a stop allows the drivetrain to feed the energy back into the batteries. The energy you loose due to wind resistance is gone, but you can convert your momentum back to usable energy with gentle stops. If you like to stand on the gas and stomp on the brakes, these cars won't save you much. And you drive like an asshole.

  14. Pay on US Losing its Scientific Dominance · · Score: 0

I agree that pay for teachers could be better, but we need to remember that most teachers get as much as 3 months (between summer, xmas vacation and spring break) off each year. The lower pay is a trade-off for all of the free time.

  15. Re:No on Earthlings: Ugly Bags of Mostly Water · · Score: 0

I agree with you, but this is not really science fiction, it's science fantasy. I really enjoy "hardcore" sci-fi, but this stuff is just boring. It's such an obvious fabrication that I never get involved with the story.

  22. Sorry, but no. on Microsoft Preps 'Janus' Music Copy-Prevention Scheme · · Score: 0

Recompression of any media file damages it to some extent, photos, video or audio. I suggest you check your facts, compressing something throws away data, decompressing and recompressing something throws away MORE DATA. The data does not magically reappear. This does not apply to switching uncompressed formats however.

  25. YUV color on Fifty Years of Color Television · · Score: 1, Interesting

One interesting part of the development of color tv relates to the YUV color space used. This color space calculates color by the difference between two of the channels, the third channel is the detail. So BW tv's just ignore the color channels and color tv's add them in. YUV in roughly the same as the LAB color space used in Photoshop. Open a photo and convert it to LAB, then look at the channels. Rather brilliant solution, huh?
