    Fingerprinting is not intended to be a pre-accusation of future crime but rather a method to hold you accountable for your actions. Oh and we all know that intentions are always exact science;

    Aren't there already laws for that to sue the freak out of any disgruntled employees?

    In Europe (specifically Belgium) we only have to go to the local police station, we ask a "getuigschrift van goed gedrag en zeden" (translated: Will of good vice and behavior) which would be given to the employer. If you are clear of any crimes or jailtime you will get such paper without any problems or costs involved.

    I would feel enraged, untrusted, violated and owned whenever a company would ask me to piss in a cup BEFORE I'd have the job position. I would need to give my "private" data, my fingerprints, my urine (which could contain ones private life, medication etc, the proof is in the puddi..err.. urine); But still, you get the point I guess; that for a programmers position; To me it's an outrage and I'd not take the position because I would feel quite stepped on my person and civil rights. Yet, if they would check on me they would get exactly the same data as without the check, because I know moral, ethics and values in life; I do not harm and know my job and position damn well without such paranoia on my behalf. I don't need drugs to be happy and am sure not an alcoholic and I don't need such checks on *my* life either.

    What else do they want? Screen where I go to dinner? Where I go out in the weekends? where does it end ? And where does all that data go ? The FBI, the company, maybe a disgruntled employee at one of those companies who likes to collect his next targets and still got through the screening; because they look like any of us, for as far as you could tell your neighbour could be a serial killer and have a high-ranking position in any company. Go hide those knives hurry hurry!

    If any employee would do something wrong, the company can still sue for damages/loss, if the cost of the project(s) are higher than the court costs; because we just do not sue everyone for the most pathetic reasons in Europe; I see no need in such background checks for a programmers position; your life is your damn life and no-one has any business with it -outside- business hours; for as far as I can tell credit checks are already too much information for any headhunter or company.

    Although, I also do not deny there is NOT any superbeingwhatever above us; but; if there is, I'd first like to have a good chat with it before I really believe such. I'm someone who needs to see before I believe in invisible faith. I trust in science but do also accept some of science is still not fully understood by us; maybe because we are so locked in that idea "something else" must be part of all this instead of keeping the mind neutral ..

    On the other hand, I do not deny certain positions of planets and stars can have influence on a human life; as we can see many people with same characteristics as others in the same zodiac although, how far can you think and how far can you believe ?

    Not everything I ever believed in was always true, why shouldn't that affect religion? I'd say I am probably partially atheist and agnostic; I don't deny but I will sure not start to believe in extras in it praying to any diety what-so-ever ...

IBM and Maxtor had very good series but also some series which were participants in the hall of clickery shame...

    The quality has been starting to drop when them hard drives were getting bigger. Even WD has bad batches/series; but still, my most survivors of war are about 40 WD's which I'm still keeping as backup of my previous systems, untouched and fully working when removed from my systems.

    Weird but true, I try to avoid any batch which is made inbetween July and October; most of the broken drives I got here are made inbetween those manufacturing dates.

    There are professional liars out there, people who can lie that good they got their vast group of followers; even in such a way they do believe in their own lies being casted out of their guts..

    To my opinion, such church or cult or whatever you call it, based on deception and lies of one single person; requires a quite troubled mind to believe in -such- crap. Those texts could make a great SciFi novel, but to believe in such is a little bit above my head literally;

    I guess not only respect and dignity is dissapearing from this world, but also logic(al thinking). Who poisoned the water supplies in making us all believe in shit which is unbelievable because of the lack of any given logic?

    I don't say belief needs to be logical; but still; for something to believe in I'd have to either see or feel things before I -can- believe in such; how the freak can so many people believe in a religion which is based on a one-man-written Sci-Fi story without any basis or facts? At least first verify a little bit which you believe in before believing in one-man-tales; because that one-man can be from the most honest man to the biggest liar on earth, this for the sake for them own wallets ...

    Of'course I could extend this statement also from one person to an entire group which can be as honest as heaven but lying as hell; since there are other organisations a/o cults out there doing the exact ludicrous same thing for the sake of their own organisation/cult.

    What do I believe in? human knowledge and human evolution; which we create we can use, which we can do best we help others with. I believe mostly that others can make that one change needed to get a better world. We've been in better times before (also in worse times) where most of these times have to do with religion, power and oppression. I do frankly also believe a lot in myself, because I know I can trust and rely on myself. Do not harm (others) and always respect even the worst enemy; which I even don't have because I don't believe in "pure hate"; only in "pure intentions" and "evil intentions" which are mostly based in the mind of an individual and not by one or another god.

    Sorry for the long "rant" but there is more to do in my opinion, so let me first introduce how I see IT in my eyes ...

    I'm already in IT for more than 15 years now; started with computers around my 13th, had my first at my 15th; the interest started by opening a VIC20 computer, programming in all sorts of uber-caveman-languages from Basic (with 3.5KiB of internal usable memory) to Assembler to Borland Pascal and now to Perl. In the meantime I have been spicing up my education by reading books, following the hardware business with PC's starting since the Amstrad PC 1512 with 4 real gray tones! yay!

    It has been an evolution, I am a walking library of knowledge, computer has always been my passion, letting it work. Where everyone else would say a computer was something with illogical ways I found the computerworld always "quite" logical. I've seen the rise of Microsoft; have been in the OS/2 support group for a while; like duh, anyone with a clear mind would agree with me to choose the latter; did some development too there, I've had lots of hardware to work with even MicroVAX (VAXservers), SGI O2's, still got 5 SGI Indy's here don't know even what to do with them because they look too nice to throw away ;) ...

    The one tide brought me to the other island; I've been studying electricity and electronics and school since I was young, PLC is a rather fascinating course, for sure when you are the one creating the first year in school; It has tought me logic, which brought me further into networking..

    Next to (graphical) programming there was also another passion ... Connecting stuff! Already since I've had my 5th PC I was running DOS, Windows and OS/2 in network through 10Base-T; the evil network which has shocked me many times; this together with a 1200 baud modem. It has brought and tought me Lantastic through a store nearby my elders place; I helped them installing their network while they helped me learning Lantastic; I liked that software so much.. Frontdoor and Remote Access where getting the 6th PC while the 7th PC was getting the Lantastic fileserver. I started getting in touch with Funet.fi's Internet; the world has opened up to me ... It was still that time when the Internet felt still "secure" if you know what I mean ...

    I've been taking my IT field always very serious and started making programs while schooltime, some programs where of benefit to the school and some I wrote and distributed through Fidonet. No-one at school ever found out. That was the time when they called me a nerd; I knew better;) I could whistle my handshakes (for a second) and proudly had my first ZyXEL U-1496 19k2 (with lcd - still working) this after a year of development. I knew the term phreaking, blue, black and diverse of other colored boxes; more systems around the globe where getting penetrated through dial-up and bbs; my interests grew in that direction how such defacements where taking place and started to know a lot about security. I got attached to linux starting at the early 1 versions and am pretty glad for that; this probably because of my earlier unix background with BSD and SCO (NO TOMATOES !!) The nerdyness has completely vanished with exceptions to the gadgets around my house which are .. to most .. heh .. typically to someone who works in IT; I guess there will be never a way to hide my true nature ...

    Currently I am running my own company together with my business partner, the company is running on linux and bsd; together with my knowledge through the years; There are lots of indifferences inbetween "us" because I am very technical and I know what I'm talking about and my business partner is very money oriented and not so experienced in technical choices. This gives often fire and ice together. It causes burnouts and headaches (if not only by bouncing against the walls with it).
