Everything that is written. I used to listen to AM radio a lot back home. I used to listen in my car and in my house both in traditional radios and in my shortwave unit (RIP). I don't think 'traditional' radio perse will go away. I think it will transform itself into a very selective medium; Selective in both who listens and what gets listened to. For instance, there was this rock station back home that for a time really sucked. As of roughly a year or so they changed the format and they mix old school rock (Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Etc.) with the best of new rock and it's an absolute delight to listen. And this is an FM station! After I relocated, I stream the station whenever I can, and whenever I'm allowed by bandwidth restrictions and firewall policies. The other stream I get is a local news station. Half an hour of news, coupled with reading the online newspapers, is enough to know what's going on back home.

I mean, I despise M$ as much as the next guy and heck, we all get reminded everyday on why we hate M$ (specially here in Slashdot). But he should've focused on talking about OSS software and its benefits. And my opinion on M$ and the Just Say No (what a dumb title for a book) is: On my home computer, everything as OSS as possible. Even if I have to buy a PC with WinXp installed, everything else will be OSS. Firefox, Thunderbird, Anti-Virus, Media Players, etc. A spayed and neutuered WinXp box can work ok if it has the appropriate software installed. For work, hey it's their dime. They can pay Micro$oft's tax and all of the hidden support costs. I don't care.

Ubuntu on My business Laptop, but under VMWare. I liked it because GNOME has a lot of little trinkets and doodads around it that make it more productive than WinBlows. For example, all of the applets available for the deskbars (stock tickers, weather, stickies). Stuff that you have to pay extra in WinBlows (or risk a nasty case of spyware infection). Another thing that I liked was clicking the date in GNOME brought a big old kick ass calendar that linked it to Ubuntu. The multiple desktops are of course another point that I like over Winblows. Yes, I know that there are multiple products for Win that do the same. I've installed a couple and the Windows box just takes a performance hit. With GNOME and KDE it seems only natural. When toying around with Linux on VMWare I usually distribute my windows as follows: one for web browsing, one for messaging, one for Office apps and the last one for pr0n. You gotta have some rest for tired eyes at 4:15 PM! :-P I was wondering what it would take a company with deep pockets and an equally deep hatred of M$ to just screw them and customize its on distro. With internal (and external?) facing 'official' software repositories. I get the creeps everytime I go to a bank and see a WinNT 4.0 login screen.

M$ reaps what it sows in terms of the press. Dvorak can moan and groan about Mac (and Linux) press coverage. But these guys are doing it right. To quote an embattled airline slogan: 'Good goes around'. Hell, I wish corporate IT departments would get smacked in the head and replace laptops with Powerbooks. I mean, combine a crappy OS with a crappy rig (D(H)ell) and you get a crappy, shitty platform to work. I wouldn't complain as much if my corporate lappy was an IBM/Lenovo piece. I lost about 10 minutes of productive work time yesterday trying to boot into Win2K! Oh, and the Pendejo word? If you're ever around spanish speaking persons, use it wisely.

The same machine for $1308 with WinBlows XP Pro. Forget about the HP's and Dell's. These guys rock! Even if I were to buy a lppy with WinBlows, I would look into these guys. Just check out their reviews in ResellerRatings.com! Go to www.powernotebooks.com And, just in case I don't work with them. Just look at the (relatively) cheap behemots that Powernotebooks has on their web site. www.powernotebooks.com. Yeeesss. Those same notebooks you see from other vendors (you know who you are) are available cheaply from these guys. Heck, they even sell you their lappys with no OS! (Hence, no MS tax!) Just take a look at the NP9880. When you see a lap like this, dual CD bays, 17" wide screen, memory reader that can read even your finger, Full (with a numeric pad) keyboard, etc. It's enough to make you drool and take your corporate D(H)ell laptop, shove it out the nearest window and requisition this baby. Granted, it won't last on battery a good deal. But with a decent DC adapter you can probably hook it up to a plane's jack. For the most moderate minded, check out their line of 15" lappys. You can get a fully decked 15" rig for a few bucks less than those 'other' guys.

I considered myself a rabid ST fan, to the point of arguing in favor of it in light of other ST shows as B5. I stopped watching ST:DS9 right before the series finale (when Jadzia Daz was killed and replaced by Ezri Dax). Not out of boredom, but my local cable carrier stopped having that particular channel (it was either WB11 from NY or another one from Chicago). Then Paramount put VOY on UPN which my local cable company does not have to this day. Then Enterprise. So, I haven't really sat down to watch a single Enterprise (or VOY for that matter) episode. I did see Broken Bow on BitTorrent and it was roughly interesting.

I really haven't ruled out ST yet. It just needs some refreshing and new management. Brannon and Braga are really killing the franchise. There needs to be a shake up in order for ST to survive into the 21st. century (heh). I mean, if you grab a couple of ST books (Federation by the reeves-stevens, and even *gasp* those written by Mr.Shatner himself) are very interesting. I've been told that the book that the actor that plays Garak wrote is excellent. ST management needs to tap into that creative stream of people. i'm pretty sure that they'll find very interesting stories.

also, i would not encase a series just in a ship, or a station for that matter. or the same people. at least for me that was a great weakness of all the sT shows. the federation does not revolve around a single ship, or a single station.

get to it. i expect a new ST show in at least 3 years. in the meantime, we'll have to conform to reruns.
