I'm going to have to agree with another poster and say Nethack is still hard(TM). I've ascended seven characters over the years (none recently) but my ratio of winning to failure is so pathetic listing it could make me cry. There have been countless times that characters have been going well, building their ascension kit only to meet their demise due to an unfortunate set of circumstances.

For those just starting, play a Valkryie. Most easy class by far to ascend as Odin likes to hang out Mjollnir like it was candy.

I've tried at least 100 games with a Tourist and only made it past the castle a few times.

If it was a real priority they would have actually dedicated some real resources to getting it done or brought in outside help for whatever was hindering them in their internal development. Mostly they deserve a bit of snarky retribution for allowing their new hardware to ship with boxes that claimed Mac support... even though it isn't in the hands of anyone but a few beta testers.

Where I come from that is called lying.

(Yes development dates slip, things happen, but if they took the time to sticker over other platforms the support was no where near ready for, why didn't they do it for OSX? Perhaps because they are dishonest? Or Lazy? Or what?)

I think you are giving too much credence to real socialization.

The bulk of office socialization is about the "work" or a sports event or last night's tv show. In fact it is in most office guideline books you are asked to steer away from subjects that could be deemed controversial. What happens at the bulk of parties? Gossip spreading? Talking about the guy so high he is licking the floor in the kitchen? Or the girl so drunk she is rapidly shedding her clothing? Most all social interactions in life are in fact meta.

What makes those situations any more valid than the meta-talk about a game, that happens within the game?

The basic disconnect here is the event that happen outside of a game or any sort of constructed reality are given more weight as they obviously "really" happened. The disconnect simply happens because this is how we were taught to interact with and understand the world. Those who grow up in a world where virtual worlds are much more ingrained would view the above dancing in a line as a social event, because, well, it "really" happened. Most of the so-called real social world is just as tedious, constructed and flimsy as anything that happens in a virtual reality.

If there's a transaction error on a Blizzard database (and yes these do happen somewhat frequently) a person might complain via in game mail. An error with a financial transaction and laws may have been broken.

  21. The hype is warranted. on Third Parties Already Taking Advantage of Tiger · · Score: 1

OSX-Tiger while seemingly nothing special because it contains a lot of previously existing technologies is really worth the hype. Why?

Because it takes those techs, adds just enough to them, integrates each one well with the others and provides the technologies in a slick, well managed package. Sure many on slashdot could cobble systems together to do 80-90% of what Tiger does over a weekend. But it would be extremely tuned to their way of thinking, not something they could easily share with friends, co-workers or family. That alone is worth the price of admission.

More importantly (and I say this as a once proud Desqview, Desqview/X, OS/2, Linux, IRIX, FreeBSD, BeOS, XP user) is that OSX restores the "lust for the future" in operating systems. It's like for the most part we had hit a wall of stagnation in the late 90s where each new OS was only allowed to have one or two really great new features. I was a heavy user of NeXT and kept using my hardware long past its prime simply because it was *better*. Now we get a modern OS on relatively decent hardware with a company behind it who isn't afraid to try many new things at once.

The best part about Tiger is the effect it may have on the industry. Hopefully it will allow some companies to risk being innovative again.

In my opinion OSX is the best client OS, by leaps and bounds.
