Indeed. Especially if you are upgrading from a "non-current" version of any Windows. The migration from a Windows 2000 Server and Desktop environment to a Windows 2003 Server and Windows XP desktop will have you paying through the nose. Gone are things like desktop equivalence.

You'll find that in year 1, sure, the main savings are from cap. ex; things like CALs and boxed software. Look into year 2 and through the stability and ease of management of a Linux environment, plus the extensive free application base and wide support network and you've doubled your savings again. Training, support and administration costs are now actually *lower* than under a Windows environment. Check the 5-year time line and you're wondering how anyone could even consider using Microsoft software.

But seriously, I'd also never advice buying a Maxtor drive. Put it this way, the last 5 drives to fail on me were Maxtors. One was a serial ATA Maxtor drive and was only 4 months old! I get the fear when I see Maxtor drives now as I know they have such a limited lifespan. Popcorn anyone? The problem is that we buy a lot of Dell equipment, and so don't get to chose HDD manufacturer.

On the flipside I've got some old Fujitsu drives that have been running in production for over 5 years now.

Remember - you get what you pay for. Maxtor are "aggressively priced" for a reason...

Best thing to do go along with what they think is best - they're going to do it anyway - but ensure that you document everything. Then, when the shit hits the fan, out come the documents. As you clearly state in your email dated November 23rd to you, your PHB and your PHB's PHB this is the *exact* problem you stated would arise, etc...

After this has happened a few times, people begin to take notice of your opinion. Its just a shame you have to rub the muck in their faces several times before they'll take notice. Take pleasure in it though; it the only fun you'll have :)

Most of the time we go for Dells. Why? Because they are the best? No. Because they are shoddy tat? Well, yes, but thats not the reason. Its because the PHB has "brand recognition" of the product. Check the rest of their lives out - it'll make you feel happier :)

Compare a Windows Server 2003 running Windows Terminal Server and having 20 Windows XP desktops connecting to it, to a completely Linux Desktop OS and Linux Server OS solution, and you're biggest saving is in the server area. If there was somewhere that I could download all of the films that I currently have to snag from bargain buckets, it would save me having to leave the house. And we all know how appealing that is :)

Its a great medium to cut out the "middleman" as well. Those who create movies can direct-sell. Heck, its so appealing I'm almost tempted to put together a team of CGI people to write film "modules" from their own homes, ready to create a full-featured CGI film or a bunch of weekly episode things.
