    Depending on what version you get, nope. The 'deluxe super version' (I can't remember offhand, sorry) has the original Half Life using the upgraded source engine. MAKE SURE THE BOX SAYS IT COMES WITH IT BEFORE YOU BUY IT.

    (those that go to despair.com will recognize this) that "You can do anything you set your mind to when you have vision, determination, and an endless supply of expendable labor." Point being, I'm sure having essentially free labor (sans pizza, of course... ;-) might have cut the price down just a little bit too...

    Not to poo poo their efforts, but the whole system was essentially a 'loss-leader' for future supercomputers projects using the G5's and Xserve....

    Ever make mistakes? You know, like leaving the light on in your house after leaving? Leave the stove on unattended? Leave on an expensive, rugged PDA on while out in the wild w/o using it? My schtick is that if you happen to leave the thing on in the middle of nowhere, you're up a creek w/o an outlet.

    A portable field charger that doesn't require external battery source (solar, hand crank, whatever) would have been nice. That, or some sort of long lasting methanol fuel cell. I mean, if you're really gonna use this thing in the great outdoors doing forestry surveys or something, I would imagine that having an alternative charging source would have been nice to have. '6 hours ain't a whole day of battery life in my book...'

    IANAP, but IIRC the magnetic field doesn't do much deflection of 'nasty radiation' RELATIVE to the atmosphere. Not saying it's not a factor, but, it's not the main factor.

    Heck, I just use Caller ID. If the number is unknown or 1-800 something, then you can go and screw yourself. If it is important enough, they will leave a message.

    OK, maybe that's a bad idea.

    Seriously, I'd guess it would be the same niche market that is buying the current batch DivX capable portable media centers. All 5 of them... THe only way I can think of them getting it any broader is to lower the price, and we all know that this ain't gonna cost less than $500 when it comes out.

    Just to be fair, you'd more than likely have to add shipping costs to the Apple machine too. (possibly tax too) Whereas the custom build you can probably get away w/ most shipping/tax costs if you go through a place like newegg or something.

    But you're still right--for an integrated, advanced system like that, $2K-ish ain't bad.

    Oh, don't get me wrong--I agree wholeheartedly. I might not have put enough sarcasm in my post to get my point across. Not that I have anything against case mods, I just would much rather spend an extra $200 on a nice vid card than making my case look m4d l33t. Or pocket the difference.

    And for the record, I do like the G5 'cheese grater' case design... though I'd give my left 80 mm fan for a friggin' extra 5.25" bay.

    Are you kidding??? No cold cathode lights? LED lit case fans?? Still in a conventional (albeit very chic) case design?? 'liquid cooling?' I spit at liquid cooling! LN2 all the way!

    Lemee see a round plexiglass SPHERE case w/ enough LED's and cold cathode lights to light up a small-to-medium sized city and enough cooling power to shatter the T1000, and THEN we can talk about 'nothing left for modders' to do... ;-)

    Nuclear explosion? Oh no. Most definately not. Perhaps something closer to a 'dirty bomb' with nuclear materials sprayed throughout a large area of atomosphere, perhaps.

    Err... correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't insulation be about the LAST thing you'd want on a laptop? Have you ever done diagnostics on your hardware sensors to see the differences in CPU and HDD temperature while using the thing?

    I paid 750 for mine (self built), amd 64 3200+, 1gig ddr, geforce fx 5900 ultra.

    Well, I stole'd mine for FREE (AMD FX53, 2 gig 500Mhz RAM, X800XT, so that must make me the smartest one of the bunch, eh? :-P

    Kidding aside, maybe the guy bought himself a nice monitor (easily $350 for a nice 17" flat panel), nice optical drives (~$100 for a decent dual layer DVD), perhaps some peripherals (printer ($100), TV tuner (~$70), nice Klipsch sound system ($200+), etc) that has nothing to do w/ UT2K4 performance but jacks up the price of his computer. I don't think that is 'retarded' in the conventional sense. Or maybe he's not a '1337 h4x0r' and didn't build his own and had to pay a little extra.

    ... Granted, this is /., which is highly unlikely... but still.

    I was under the impression that 'shutting off' (Selective Deniability) of the GPS signals would be almost impractical for the US to do in this day and age. There is a very large and crucial civilian infrastructure that relies heavily on GPS, way above and beyond Joe schmuck in his SUV w/ GPS capabilities. Also, I think (as of now) that it is all but impossible to really 'shut off' a specific area as of now. Not to say people haven't TRIED...

    Did I take this out of context or what? 500 seconds 'or longer?' What do you do for the rest of the time there? I don't think out capacitors are THAT sophisticated to work on this kind of model, but I could be wrong...

    Err... not so sure what kind of 'weirdos' were hosting the site, but last I checked they were Japanese... they have their own language, culture, and everything. :-/

    If by 'normal' you mean an english translation, dload a Japanese language pack and babelfish it or something...

    Yeah, there is just something to be said about buying PERISHABLES of a mundane nature online... I can see something a little more 'gourmet' that is much more difficult to get normally, like foie gras, Kobe beef, or fresh morels. You normally won't be able to find stuff like under most normal circumstances. I just can't seem to justify to myself to pay 20-30% markup for something I can just get myself at the store just down the road. ...

    well, unless gas prices keep going up.
