  1. Quick back of the envelope calculations.. on Biotech Company Making Fossil Fuels With a 'Library' of Bacteria · · Score: 1

From their best case scenario, they can produce 25000 gallons per acre per year, which is 800 barrels a year. Current world oil consumption ~80,000,000 bbl/day * 365 = 29.2 billion barrels per year. 29.2 billion bbl per year / 800 bbl per acre per year = 36.5 million acres of this biofuel to fulfill the world's needs. 36.5 million acres / 640 acres per square mile = 57031 square miles. 57031 square miles is roughly the size of Iowa. US oil consumption is roughly 20,000,000 bbl/day, so that would be 14257 square miles set aside. Much more realistic - this is close to the area of Maryland. If oil gets super expensive again (>$120/bbl) and stays there, this could definitely become a reality.

My Halo 3 run incredibly faster now- although it isn't really mine. My Halo 3 disc got really scratched somehow, so I borrowed a friend's copy and installed it to my 360's HD. Now, with the image mounted up, load times are much faster, because it doesn't have to sort through scratched sections of the disc. Before, some levels weren't even playable, and now they are, all because I can install a game and only use the disc to prove I own the game. This feature will be very, very useful for people who have scratched discs who also have friends who can lend them a copy. Rip friends' disc -> play a previously unplayable disc.

my current motivation for learning programming is to make money. as you may or may not know, the financial markets are dominated by automated trading machines. so i figure, "hmm.. it can't be too hard to write a profitable system." ha. it is very hard, but a great project. i'm currently using ninjatrader to write basic strategies in c# to trade futures. oil, the s&p 500, wheat, corn, hogs.. its all tradable if you notice patterns that occur over and over again. the systems can be as simple or as hard as you make it. of course, the more simple ones aren't as profitable, so as the desire to make money increases, so does the complexity of the program. in short, i'm writing strategies in c# for ninjatrader to make money. give your son a go at this and he'll learn it all himself. and who knows.. maybe he'll come up with some novel concept and make himself more money than he knows what to do with.

As impressive as this would be to see, it has a slim chance of ever happening. The fly-by-wire software on the new Airbus and Boeing fleet of aircraft will prevent excessive maneuvering. On Airbus systems (and I'd imagine Boeing would be around the same), the maximum pitch angles allowed are -15 to 25ish. A G-limiter is in place too to prevent the passengers from feeling more than 2.5Gs. Airbus planes have hard limits on many variables, but Boeing planes can be made to follow the pilot's intentions by doubling the pressure on the control stick to override the FBW.
