  1. Implications for Skype? on VoIP Providers Given 120 Days to Provide 911 Service · · Score: 2, Interesting

Initially, when noticing this article, I immediately thought of Skype as potentially having issues under this legislation (due to its ability to 'Skype-out' to phone lines). The article would seem to point to it not being required to comply under the 'Instant messaging' software gotcha. If Skype were required to implement 911 support, its possible they could have problems distinguising between those who use the software for internet-based voice chat and internet telephony.

  2. Great, further adoption on Trackerless BitTorrent Beta Posted · · Score: 4, Insightful

I'm really glad to see this coming in the mainstream BitTorrent client. At the moment it can be hard to use the distributed tracking system because of its dependence on Azureus as a client. A lot of people have been making noise about this, and hopefully now that its in the main client, the developers of the other BitTorrent clients will make implementing support for this more of a priority.

  3. Interesting concept on New Shoe Designed to Kick-Start Couch Potatoes · · Score: 4, Insightful

The idea behind this seems quite good, rewarding exercise with television, but 2 hours for 15,000 steps (both daily recommended amounts, according to the article..) seems a little low. Most kids, even if they take to such a device, are going to be watching more than 2 hours TV a day.

As for the article's claim that this will be an 'eye-opener' for those with a sedimentary lifestyle, I think it would be more likely to join the realms of exercise equipment old and new that sits unused while its owners procrastinate about getting more exercise.

  4. Well on Washington State Outlaws Spyware · · Score: 1

Will this make any real major difference to the internet? most spyware companies are smart enough to have moved out of the US by now, and will probably be in safe havens for their activities.

It would be better developing ways to stop the actual spyware, rather than try to track down the people doing it. If the people were actually making serious money, and knew the government would be after them, they would be out of the country like a flash, and continue their business.

  5. Re:Crashing? I can see it now. on Software Glitches Stall Toyota Prius · · Score: 1

Some software programs cause companies to be the 'next microsoft' now? Minardi had a software glitch take out both their F1 cars at last weekend's grand prix, are they the next Microsoft?

I'd be more happy to see more work being done on the prius, and alternative fuel vehicles like it.

  6. Helping out current Java Open Source projects? on Open source Java? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Bringing open source Java runtimes to fruition should be an important step for open source java projects that are currently held back from entering distributions and packages because of this requirement. Also the requirement of Sun Java to use Java 5 on Linux (this situation may have changed..) would be a good thing to challenge.

Having such a fundamental and established organization like the Apache project behind the effort should really aid & help to posture this effort within the wider open-source community.

  8. Good example? on IBM Backs Firefox In-House · · Score: 4, Insightful

Having IBM as a good example to use when pushing for corporate adoption of Firefox is a great thing for people working in this area. Although, it must be said that IBM are less likely to have troublesome components (IE specific webpages, ActiveX components) within any intranet pages than other companies due to their own products in that area (I'm thinking Lotus..).

  9. Good news for a number of browsers on Internet Explorer's Share Dips Below 90% · · Score: 1

I think its important to note that this isnt just a good sign for Firefox, its also great news that the more standards compliant browsers (like Safari & Opera) are taking share away from older, broken ones like IE 4 and (to a lesser extent) IE 5. As more of the web transition toward browsers that allow developers to take advantage of the power of CSS, we can begin to push further toward the semantic web.

  11. Bounties & 'Scratching an Itch' on OSS Projects Offer Bounties For Features · · Score: 5, Insightful

In some cases at least, it seems as if these bounties are used to deal with the relative lack-of-glamour inherent in implementing some features in pieces of OSS. For the most part, its the cool hacks and features that people need individually that grab attention and get worked on. Bounties seem to redress that balance of developer attention towards less glamourous but key pieces of functionality & improvements which aren't imminently required. (although for the most part, it seems like a different class of hackers are attracted to the bounties within projects)

Of course, putting money into OSS through these kind of means is a great use, since similar amounts spent on commercial products has a minimal/neglible effect on their development. Its also a great way for those people who cant code to contribute to the software they use, and get features they'd like to see implemented.

  12. Maintainability of Perl code? on Perl Medic · · Score: 3, Insightful

Cue the flood of 'Perl is hard to maintain/read' and counterflood of 'You can write hard to maintain/read code in any language' posts.

I think it can be generally agreed that due to the TMTOWTDI philosophy behind Perl, there can be complications involved when inheriting code from others who use a different style and different approach. (Obviously due to the many ways any given task can be approached).

One (common?) approach to dealing with this seems to be to use different languages such as Python or Ruby. Arguably, however, if more coders stuck to code style guidelines and used best practices instead of quick hacks, the problem would be minimal, or at least no worse than other scripting languages.
