I bought one song through iTunes 6, realised I couldn't Hymm it, and haven't bought another from them. Ten years time, is Apple still going to have a server handling authorisations for music?
What they don't mention in the news item (and you have to trawl through 3 sites just to find the bloody thing), is that while Amazon charge $0.15 per GB used, they also charge $0.20 per GB transferred. So you actually get stung twice, or even four times if you backup weekly.
Google is relatively impartial. MSN's search engine favours Microsoft stuff to an enormous extent. Searching MSN for "pocket pc games" brings up MS's own Pocket PC site, which has absolutely no games on it whatsoever.
Not so. The phone is constantly communicating with the base stations - for the obvious purpose that the network needs to know where it is when someone calls you.
I've tried a tracking service and it got my location down to about 200 yards. Was quite impressed.
You can already emulate a Palm on the Windows Mobile platform. So, since you can get a Windows Mobile Palm, Apple will need to install MacOS X onto it, boot Windows Mobile in something like VMWare, then use that to emulate the Palm operating system. You could probably do that in any order.
There's going to be at least one person who takes the above paragraph seriously...
If I get on a well seeded torrent and set the upstream bandwidth to a reasonable level (30KBps), within ten minutes I'll be downloading at the full capacity of my 10mbit cable connection. Not sure how you can call it slow, unless you're after movies or something.
I went into private housing with much the same impressions that you did with 6 other people I knew well. Unfortunately, they have no common sense or inkling to save power, and I argued with them for the first 3 months over the fact that they wanted to run the heating at full power 24 hours a day, and left lights (200W) and portable electric heaters running in their rooms.
The bill was massive, but because their parents paid their share, they didn't care. So now the central heating (a 35kW gas combi boiler) runs 24 hours a day continuously at maximum power... while I'm sitting here with the radiator turned off and the window open! AND THEY STILL THINK IT'S COLD! Apparently, for them 23 degrees is "room temperature".
I know, let's make people carry around a card with copies of their fingerprints and retinal scans on it. You know, just in case they forget to bring along their hands or eyeballs.
Excuse me? You're saying that when we run out of power we'll invent a brand new source of energy out of desperation? Fusion is up in the air at the moment, nuclear will work if you ever get round the environmentalists, and wind and tidal power can provide about 5%.
It's a fallacy to point out the total energy used by such TVs. I only control my TV. I control those 4W. Those 4W make no difference.
The sheer arrogance of that statement astonishes me. Yes, on your own you won't make a difference, but when EVERYONE has your attitude you're in for one helluva shock when the oil and gas reserves run out. I also hate to break it to you but I bet my right hand that no new, reliable, large scale energy source is going to appear within my lifetime.
Ignoring that fact adding a battery would probably use more energy in the manufacturing that it could possibly save, the point of the parent author was energy saving in general, not saving you money.
I don't know how many TVs there are in the US, and I also suspect that shutting down the transformers in a large set will save more than 2W. I'm going to guess at 5W saved, over 500 million TVs. That's 44kWh per TV per year saved.
In every TV, that's 2x10^10kWh of energy saved across the whole of the US. Those are wild guesses, but they're probably in the ballpark. I don't want to come across as a troll, but it highlights the fact that you think solely about yourself rather than the bigger picture.
I'm not a tree-hugger, but you only have to look out of the window to see all the energy being wasted (PCs / TVs left on, cars sitting in traffic jams etc. etc.). Like it or not, unless we go nuclear we're going to have a serious energy problem in 50-100 years time. I think we need to start changing attitudes now.
I have to add Crimson Skies to the list. It's a fantastic game that was sadly overlooked by many. Good graphics, fun arcade style flying, interesting back story and excellent voice acting.
How about getting the people who did Picassa to work on the interface? Picassa has single-handedly got the "Best Interface EVER" award from me simply because it appears so polished.
"wait until a method is devised for weighing the Universe."
;)
Don't worry, we're hard at work on some really big weighing scales. Actually, anything suitable for the average American should do nicely...
Woah, I'm gonna get flamed for that.
I have NTL cable in the UK and get a consistent 10Mb/s on torrents and downloads from fast servers.
This is exactly what we're encouraged to do during the Practical Software Development modules at the University of Leeds. Works for me.
Since when does a refrigerator "make" cold? They simply pump the heat out of the fridge.

Sadly this is no longer the case with iTunes 6, as DVD-Jon no longer has the time to crack the changes Apple have made to their encryption.

Ah, but does it do the Microsoft Word favourite trick of trying to correct "internet" to "internat"? ;)

Yes. I blame the yoofs of today.
Ya know, sometimes I get the impression that posters on Slashdot are a bit too cynical for their own good. ;-)

In Russia, stock exchange fells you!
You mean like Outlook? I've had many a problem trying to work around this security to open an EXE file I was expecting and someone forgot to ZIP. :)

I think you've underestimated the gravity of the situation.
