I agree. However it's easier to write about numbers instead of subjective ideas like stories, metaphors and symbols. That way they don't have to think, and neither do the readers.
I should have stated I'm not a fan of using set px size in fonts, people should use em's or pts. That way everything stays proportional regardless of your resolution.
sIFR doesn't recommend using flash for body text. only headlines. And it doesn't remove the original HTML text, simply puts the flash on top, so google see's it just fine as would anyone who doesn't have flash.
From reading a lot of comments it seems like a lot of people are afraid of really horrible amateurish looking sites will arrive if people had access to more fonts. Why? Sure, some people will do this. And if you don't like it, don't go to their site. Having access to more fonts is only a good thing. It can allow sites to look unique (note, I'm not saying unreadable. There are a ton of fonts out there that are unique and readable). Magazines have unique looks and use a ton of fonts. Why can't the web support such features?
Sure there are some possible negatives, but they don't outweigh the positives.
Yes. There is. I've had a fetish for typography for a long time (i'm not a graphic designers, i'm a programmer). Fonts make all the difference. However, good typography should not be noticed. You only notice it when it's bad.
Start with a site like http://www.typophile.com/ and go from there. There are a ton of fonts out there, all with personality and their own style each fitted for a different situation.
The user has selected the font most comfortable for them.
While it is nice that the user CAN do this, how many do you know who actually DO?
Also, it's not a bad idea to use different fonts on a page with different styles and sizes. having everything forced into one font can ruin the look - and i'm not talking about if it looks pretty, I'm talking about empahsis on certain content..etc
Once the material is downloaded, users can only view it for up to 24 hours before it expires.
I know companies need a time limit, but why 24 hours? If it's any decent quality it will take me most of an evening to just download the movie. AND then hopefully I'll have time to watch it the next evening before it just stops playing as it will have been 24 hours since I downloaded it....
I didn't read the article, but I'm giving them then benefit of the doubt that the 24 hours starts only after you have downloaded the entire movie.
that isn't their top 100, that is Amazon's top 100. It's a tool to verify which artists/albums are associated with the RIAA. This way, you can avoid the RIAA if you'd like. Even type in an artist you like who is with the RIAA and it will make non-RIAA recomendations for you.
"Outside of geek circles and people who have a dedicated work machine at home, I don't know one single household with multiple operating systems. Average people simply don't care enough about computers to have more than one."
My Mom.
She converted to a Mac just this year but leaves her old PC in the basement for her grandkids to come over and play on - ie, rescue hero pc games...etc
i can see some people using it, but not a ton. I take a train to work every day, and the ride isn't long enough for a single show.
If i was on an airplane, i'd rather use my laptop.
I am not trying to say that people won't like it. But the question was 'Are people not ready' I'm saying that I just don't think it's applicable to a large number of people. It has nothing to do with readyness.
"Is the mainstream market not yet ready for portable video?"
Not ready? Or perhaps people just aren't interested in trying to walk around downtown while staring down at a tiny screen trying to make out what the people on the screen are doing.
Anyone know if iTunes will now burn your video files you buy onto a DVD that will play in a standard DVD player?
If i buy every episode of a tv show, I may want to burn them to a dvd to watch when someone else is using the computer. or if i'd rather watch it on my huge 40 inch plasma tv (if I had one).
This thing with these videos games is to the point of annoyance. A video
game is a release and an escape. They require a tremendous amount of
brainpower to work correctly thus the gamers benefit. There are more
important events and issues for our government to work on than video
games. The gist of my point is get over it and move on...a video game
debate is unnecessary when there are bombings in London and people
starving in my neighborhood.
Now, why would football actually influence kids to carry out violent
acts? The answer is simple to me: the culture. Football has its own
culture of macho values. It cuts off the weak and rewards the strong. It
tells you to be a good player means to be a violent and mean player. It
encourages peer pressure and the rise of leaders in a system that is
barbaric once examined. In short, it encourages the stereotype of being
a man. A man that is tough and unafraid and a leader and feared and thus
admired. Those who fall victim to believing in this set of values are
those who are more likely to pick fights, follow what is known as the
"pecking order", and give into pressure for fear of being labeled a
"pussy". All of these things are more likely to lead to violent acts
than a fantasy game or GTA. GTA is not real or passed off as real. It
does not create a culture that has been passed down from generation to
generation...the culture has created the game. GTA has really done the
world a service by offering a nonviolent outlet for violent thoughts and
feelings. And, finally, it is better to role-play a violent dick than
actually being one.
Capacities are said to be up to 5 mega bits and the stored data lasts for 6 months - the length of time it takes a fingernail to be completely replaced.
i admit i didn't read the article, but what about when the nail is partially being replaced?
We were talking about GUI's, otherwise I'd give you that one.
4. iApps - Free.
it is the GUI of these apps (in addition to being free) that makes these programs so great. I put my mom in front of an iMac with iPhoto and iMovie and she's never been happier, the programs are very very easy to use, and let casual users do very useful things.
I agree. However it's easier to write about numbers instead of subjective ideas like stories, metaphors and symbols. That way they don't have to think, and neither do the readers.
at some point they'll just use your finger print to see who has entered the request. If you keep entering it... they'll be ignored.
This will also be one more thing they can track....

I wonder if the person is really thinking they'll win this or if they are just trying to smear micro$oft's name. Anyone have any more info?

To me it sounds like a mugging waiting to happen.
we can get there sooner if we avoid having our civilization destroyed TWICE by aliens.

Do they try to make it look like it's for a lawnmower?
i hate to tell you this... but while that movie was bad, Twister is the worst movie of all time.
the hurricane could have been a terrorist!!!!
Can't forget software, which is pretty useful in making the iPod work the way it does.
agreed.
always nice when someone puts a test out with the files they used so we can play with it, too.
