...when are features like PGP, anti-phishing, anti-spam, working rich text/html, etc. going to become part of a standard that everyone can use easily? Right now there are a bunch of "hacks" that patch up problems with email, and as such there is a huge difference in what some people get versus what others are stuck with. Is this something like IPv6 that will simply have to be mandated and rolled out with the cooperation of lots of large organizations?

But on a more serious note, people here might be surprised that UK people (at least those in London, if I recall correctly), aren't as worried about privacy/spying issues as you might think. London has had hundreds of cameras in its metro area to prevent crime. I think it would be a little worrying if it recorded political protests or other citizen-sensitive events. But overall I imagine there's a reduction in person-to-person crime there.

Looking our for your astronauts is laudable, but they're just going too far lately. This last manned shuttle flight... what was it, like two years extra they spent trying to avoid another foam problem... and they had one anyway? Of course, NASA is dealing with millions of funding people (you and I, taxpayers) keeping tabs on them via the news outlets, so maybe the private endevours would fall under the same kind of scrutiny if they ever became super popular.

I always doubted the reliability of Nielsen ratings, especially given the cancellation of so many great shows (e.g. Family Guy.. for awhile anyway). Moreover, I have never, ever known anyone who's been in a so-called "Nielsen family". I guess my friends and I aren't average enough to make it into the sampling demographic.

One reason advertisers loved the web (at first, at least) was because it's possible to get exact numbers of "viewers", know what viewers are doing (clicking through, clicking then ordering, etc.), and not miss any viewers simply because they didn't get lucky enough to be sampled. I can't imagine being an advertiser trying to track my television ad results... what, survey everyone who walks in my store?
