    it's amazing what you can do with a keyboard ...

    ps: i do not have a mouse, i have a trackball and i use gnome, and I can access everything with a keyboard

    OK the credit is yours.
    I agree with you, and I am not in any way against any technological advance, be it medical or any other kind of science...

    however I was talking about distribution and I see this kind of advancement as a potential danger to make differences a lot bigger than they are.

    Think of medicine ... EVERYONE should get it, and that is the first thing EVERYONE should get when in trouble !

    Now think of weapons development, or just making species disapper in the favour of a fancy fur-coat or a turtle-egg-coctail ... or driving a car ALONE that consumes as much gas as a bus that carries 54 people ...

    Protecting yourself from other BAD GUYS is important, but at the first place WE as the same race should put medicine and our omwn enhancement in priority other than fighting each other ..
    but again it is just an idillic picture somewhere in my mind ....

    And i understand that they WILL get it, and that tehy WILL be able to afford it ....
    but I still think if our governments really wanted they could put medicine (even experimental medicine)a priority above all ...

    but as we know we are overpopulated ....

    Hmm, yes there are people with good will, and there are people without ...
    But being the top of the foodchain on that planet makes us predators against our own race...

    I am not a communist, (in any sense, I lived in that everyone is equal comrade thing - thanks but no thanks - it just did not work as advertised) but i feel that things are very badly distributed, and it is just getting worse and worse ....

    Maybe you and me would choose to make less and provide healthcare and genetic enhancement to your workers including the cleaning lady that takes out the trash from our shiny offices or the gold miner that endangers his family to privide us with our wedding rings, but I think we are very alone with that ...
    And while I think those who do more/kow more deserve more, i think there should be moral cap on how much you expand and own.....

    I would not feel confortable in the bottom of my hart having 12 monster gas eating vehicles for myself while i see hundreds of my workers waiting for the bus ... just an example ...
    I am looking for buying a small lot that's just next to a huge coffe field... and though I earned some of the money with hard work and years of studying for it I will still be unconfortable seing the foreign field workers when it's picking season - knowing that with their hard work they make less in a month what I make in a day, and it's more likely less than what people make in the fraction of that time in more advanced/well paid countries ...
    And that's just not right.... it is right, that's how it works, but for me it's just not right ...

    no one wants to die .. well some do, but living forever is a dream since people has awaken to be thinking thingies ...

    however that planet is overpopulated or at least badly distributed ... eg in a big city poor people share a few square meters of apartment with 10 others while the rich own endless properties with golfcourses or other unproductive land (no i do not think everything should be used as agricultural land, but owning a few hectares of forest would help pollution as opposed to a deforested golf course )

    and, who is going to afford to be re engineered or their kids re-engineered to live forever?

    not the people who work in shitty dangerous environments for nothing, but the ones who can interestingly get out of harms way even with diseases like cancer, aids and other ilnesses that kill the rest who cannot afford to be alive ...

    i feel that if XY moviestar or president can heel from nasty stuff, the only reason others cannot do that is because our governments do not want it ..

    and back to aging: why would you give the opportunity for the poor masses to live longer, spare longer, get out of poverty and stop doing the dirty stuff for you, while you could just live forever and make sure they reproduce into their own hamster wheel to keep you served ?

    I am the kind of person who suspects that some diseases were released on purpose to keep control of overpopulation .... i might be sick though ...

    ps: every time i see a vampire movie i start thinking if i would take the opportunity for the small burden of drinking blood and living at night ... and i am a vegetarian ... i think people will kill for the opportunity to live even 30-50 years longer ...

    ahm yep you are right in england i had bad experience being a foreigner sometimes ... eg in Coventry it was an everyday problem that students of the language school got beaten up by local foreign haters ...

    however shouting hungarian helped me outta crap in new york and in miami once, both times i was asked for money and after replying politely i was asked in a more aggressive manner .... but mumbling hungarian curses seemed to work ... maybe they thought i was nuts or something ...

    on the other hand i walked around bad parts of NY after dark with a professional looking (still) camera and i received looks, but no one really bothered ....

    same in england, I slept with a friend in front of the metro station (we got there at 3am, and till like 5 there was no transportation)

    1. wear a used arny jacket !!
    -warm with liner isn't without, looks crappy enough, but can look stylish (eg US alpha jacket - black)

    2. use a crappy looking backpack, that hides the form of a laptop (my toshiba can be spotted in most of my backpacks ...(i have a gym and a surfer backpack, the both suck for laptop)

    3. go to the gym/martial arts stuff (i am 6.3'' and 87kilos (194pounds for all you ignorant non metrics)

    4. shave your head -or wear very short (no i am not a skinhead) but it gives a nice aggression-level-boost to the most babyfaced person ... (i also bikeride a lot and it's just better not to rot into your helmet)

    5. wear your watch upside down if you have something high tech or a rolex - so only the belt shows ..

    6. combat boots help, but even a pair of martens give a boost (the round nose ones) in the UK they are dirt chep at markets, even new (i do not like the metal insert martens - just gives you a too aggressive look, also only punks bouncers and alik wear them where i am from)

    7. don't look like a geek ... or look like a geek that might carry a remote controlled nuke in the backpack ...

    8. shout in a foreign language ... speaking hungarian (especially our tasty cursing ) seem to make some people think ...

    and if it gets tight just hand it over and run ...
    i agree an ipod or laptop does not worth getting stabbed, blinded, beaten .. or whatever ...

    here in cr i also try to keep a low profile, i keep my bike dirty, and never change decals/stickers, the shittiest it looks the most likely no one touches it....
    same with cars ... i never wash it, and try to keep it dirty (it's easy, just leave the sand in it from the beach, and throw chocolat papers and other crap on the floor)

    on the other hand I am riding hours in the middle of nowhere and i know if someone comes with a gun i just take a walk home and not try to get into troubble, on the other hand if i see the opportunity to fight i will take the slightest chance to kick the hell out whoever tries to take my stuff ...

    I know on the streets of london it is not an option, but protective gear (motocross) helps a lot in a fistfight .. i know i got into one once... and i wasn't the one who left the place running :)

    for an oem pc+ xbox yes, maybe ..

    for winmodem, winkeybord winmouse and other windows only devices -equipped pc .. well - for sure not ..

    do not misunderstand me, i have an xbox net to my playstation2, and work on a linux box and have bsd servers ...

    ms hardware is good quality (kwyboard, mouse, xbox & controllers) but software is a pain in the ass .. and i avoid it as much as possible

    yeah-yeah i'm typing it on my wife's laptop, but thats the only thing i can type on in my bed right now :)

    I am a 32 year old (kid).
    And I have to admit, the first time I saw ddr and the dancepad I thought it was plain stupid ..
    untiMy wife saw one at the local game store, and the owner convinced her to try it out ....

    not that I jump around a lot on it, but sometimes it is really fun ... (i work out in the gym and on my dirtbike in the forest so DDR is not really an effort for me)

    I just have one problem: the selection of music just sucks for me ... maybe when it comes with an option to upload my own tunes I would jump-around more on it :)

    ps: i have a lightgun gema for the ps-2, that uses one controller+one lightgun (police 0/24 - japanese release only - sorry only in japan or with a modchip) i still have to try it out with one dancepad for movement+lightgun for shooting ...

    the dancepad could be fun for fighting games .. and i recently discovered a fight device from thrustmaster, that you can kisk and punch and whatever (i did not really read the specs - lack of time sucks)

    anyway the workout mode of DDR is killer, and if we cannot make it to the gym (which is hard since I rent an office IN a gym) she burns some CAL on that thing and I laugh my butt of :) - it is even fun to watch ...

    a chineise version of the gamepad sells for around $20-$25 :)

    In some countries it is probably enough to have a different colour of skin..

    In some countries you demonstrate against globalisation, or as a student you join the greens and make a stand in front of the train carrying nuclear waste.....

    Then again... you log-in to a chatroom being angry because of a recent event (just watching everyday CNN, or local news) and say something stupid - eg whoever deserved whatever because they did that other thing the first place .... (-yes I do not want to give any example)

    Think of kids (teens) ... have you ever said something too radical, maybe racist because at a certain age you were influenced by an adult or just a stupid friend ? (a radical music group, or someone in a movie that made you think for a split second that his cause was the right one? )

    Seriously what are the steps (what is the method) that puts you on that list ?

    What if these lists get public and even the cashier in the supermarket gets the blinking red sign when she slides your creditcard ?

    And what's more scary: do you ever get off that list if you get on it ? Or your FSCK'd for life ?
    Being stared at, stripped at checkpoints and occasionally dragged into interrogation and have your door kicked in in the middle of the night ?

    I'm not a politician, that's for sure, but it is reaching a point when I do not want to travel anywhere, I do not want to say anything to anyone online....
    I am scared that what I might say can and will be used against me, my family, my kids ...

    What's in my head? Honestly I would grab a bunch of good souls and move to an other planet and retry with a new model of society ... (of course for that statement alone I might be considered something bad and dangerous to society)

    Spam supposedly costs a lot to companies.

    I just realized that when started to run my own business and had to deal with over 50 spam messages on my "business accounts". Spam filters do not work, since some of my contact are listed in spam DB-s for a reason or an other. My shared cable IP is in those, since some badass used that provider (the only provider btw here) to spam.

    To make my story short, why not just put a bounty on spammers? If they are really worth going after why not "outsource" or "open source" it to the masses.

    You give the address of the spammer, FBI kicks the door you get your $50k...

    Actually providers could do the same, they have the CC info, and for a chineise ISP getting $50k would be a bigger catch than the monthly $2000 for a bulletproof hosting and all the troubble that goes with it ...

    Techniques? : set up honeypots, sell bulletproof hosting, pay the $25 to the spammer who offers you guaranteed 7million visitors, and go after them when their bank shows on your CC statement ...

    Say that you are a mail advertising/mail software guru and put an ad in the local newspaper, or online ....

    PS: I dealt with casinos, pharmacies, credit card sites, and debte management, and I never sent out 1 single mail without someone asking for it (eg signing up to news with a signup confirming system) or directly hitting REPLY in my mailer.... and I am proud of it... and I would be happy to have all the crap disappear from my mailbox and have those bastards pay HUGE fines !

    as soon as I have some spare time I will find out all the IP ranges and just throw them outta my sendmail config...

    I think it is ... I do not have any friends/family/business in china, so any mail from those IP ranges can go to hell ....

    I use spamassasin (running from .procmailrc) so people who I host mail for can enable or disable it depending on their taste ..

    ps: well I'm in costa rica, and half of the IP ranges are in some kind of spam database, including the one I share with some-hundred behind the NAT subscribers ....
    well no the local ISP is kicking spammers butt, and as other people will go my way and just ban china the ISP (=government!?) might consider doing the same ...

    honestly, I might even block spammer IP-s to my websites, because all I get is just email address spiders (and fraudelant PPC clicks )
    that return as SMTP agents burying me under XANAX and Buy a university certificate bullcrap UCB SPAMHELL

    I do not think the RF signal could do that (for sure not)

    BUT: cellphones are abused devices, sitting in pockets being dropped on the floor, sat on etc ...
    so the battery can get loose, ..

    I can easily imagine a small spark, when your battery gets in contact (after loosing contact for a split second) with the device again ....

    chewing gum paper once made a fire in my pocket, when getting in contact with a spare cellphone battery ... burned a hole in my pocket, and left a small burn on my leg (it was VERY close to my -you know what- :o )

    anyway it is illegal to use a cellphone at a gasstation in most countries due to security reasons

    disclaimer: All respect to apple, I admire their high quality hardware (compared to generic pc crap)
    and I know that whereever I went to work the designers touched anything with a big amount of disgust that did not have the apple logo on it ..

    However I am against patents that trademark common sense data structures, computer interfaces or anything "obvious"

    if it continues like this someone will patent such basic things az pressint CTRL+ENTER to send mail, or CTRL-ALT-DEL to restart a computer..

    Even worse, the EU seems to tend to go the US way, not opposing such ridiculous patents, creating an other law system where it becomes business to slip on a wet surface and suing the crap out of decent law respecting everyday people...

    I feel that code based on ridiculous patents such as the previously mentioned "long M$ button press" and other interface patnets SHOULD BE reproduced/decompiled/reverse engineered AND redistributed from a place where these patents do not have legal effect or cannot be enforced ....
    Rebel? not really, but I do not want to end up being sued by a BIG_LAME_ASS multinational corporation because my software uses a timed button press, or because my website uses "LINKING TECHNOLOGY" or a certain method of accessing data from a (freely available) database structure ...

    what's next? really? ... let's make a patent on using a pen as a pointer on a touchscreen screen so all your PDA using geek souls will pay for my neverending vacation because I catch you on the street drawing your PDA and the stylus I WILL PROSECUTE YOU ....

    get a life, be innovative ...
    have code? do not want to share? fine ... you do not have to, but do not restrict people from creating something good just because you have the POWER and resource to make it first ..

    while desktop FANCY was never my priority (i am the kinda guy who does not care about the screensaver or the background, I usually use an older version of gnome toolbar with wmaker og gnome dt with minimum window decoration for speed and simplicity) REAL transparent windows was always a kind of dream of mine .... putting xawtv with news behind my terminal window ..... or under the space consuming toolbars of mozilla ..... it has several cool uses and now I am really pissed ...

    will ms come and bust my ASS for pressing record on my linux IPAQ for too long to trigger a recording or will they go after opie developers ? seriously will someone enforce that shit ?

    it really pisses me off, that everywhere I go I am forced to download a new falsh plugin, java vm, whatever player, new version of explorer (since mozilla seems to be outdated for some lameass websites), MS media player, realone player ....

    really, can we just see the content of websites, with .png, .gif, .jpeg(??copyright) or whatever standard ?
    i am willing to use javascript when available, but I tend to simply ignore sites with that kind of crap ...
    If i can build and maintain sites with lots of content in a way that they are 100% functional even with links or lynx, or my pda browser (before ppc2000 IE, lately konqueror/opie) then why cannot professional designers keep their sites at least usable for people with thin (or just different) clients ..

    I am going to issue chargebacks against several sites where I paid for services and where I can see :your browser is outdated and does not support encrtyption - download IE 6.0)- all that with a full install of mozilla for linux .... I do not have explorer and I do not want to have one, nor windows, nor any stupid rich-media-content bandwidth-hog crap ....

    uhh sorry for my rage ... I love hitchhiker's guide, and that flashcrap made me really mad ...

    ps: I love when they have 5 different flash ads, and they all open up a new browser for each on my pda (href target=new)

    If you have some kind of info center, or an entry point, you could instruct hikers to tune their radio (walkie talkie) to a certain channel, and track that freq, or RFID (given to people in the area ....)

    I would not like people to track me wirelessly, because sooner or later the BAD GUYS are going to figure out your freq/wep/whatever and start tracking people with expensive equipment, or whatever they are after ....

    I rode mountain bikes (many times alone) back in Europe ... and I had nasty crashes (downhill can be really tough after spring waters) and sometimes I had problems getting of the mountain with crashed bike/broken rib etc ..... I would volunteer and use bt/rf/rfid/whatever to be protected ...

    what about visibe checkpoints, where people can turn on their gadgets and send a few bits of info via BT/IR/WIFI/morse/smokesigns/whatever-you choose
    of course that requires some kind of education on what to send and where, and what is the sign where you can leave a trace ...

    on the other hand I am from hungary, where it happens that BAD GUYS wait for kids (not 30 year old 200 pound downhillers like me - though i cannot bounce bullets) to steal expensive bikes.....
    and damn ... now I ride enduro bikes in Costa rica (no train to take me up for mtb downhills here)
    also sometimes alone .... and here ... her you can easily get shot for a bike (even for a push-bike not a motorized one)

    other thing: interesting idea, i am really thinking on how to track my dogs around the garden so that tread might help me a lot ... too bad i cannot tell my dogs to press the red button or turn on the palm and send a message while they are on patrol :)

    (I am looking into getting a bigger piece of property off grid/virgin land)

    i think it costs nothing compared to the price of the main infrastructure (plane+crew+airport crew+ coms + airport + security ... etc etc ...)

    I suspect they already have communications to earth and satellit stations, so stuffing 2 APs onto a plane, and give some shaped access (I mean limited bw) with the overpriced tickets would probably give a nice reputation to the company ...

    Even if the infrastructure is expensive, I do not think they will make it on that $30....

    I would not pay that fee unless it is absolutely necessary (meaning, I am forced) ... but maybe i'm just a different person, or a lucky one, who can switch his phone off for a week and disappear to nowhere with a no-net-access-laptop-or-pda ...

(tip: lufthansa has a special jack that converts to normal audio jack, have one and movies are free :)

    1 year ago I found myself sleeping at Amsterdam airoport *ON MY WEDDING SUIT CARRYING BAG* where Martinair left me after I missed their flight because they took off in the middle of a storm and we "emergency landed in an other city".... I had an IPAQ+charger, a creditcard (which did not work at the airport), and $20 ....
    sure it's better than recent airline events, but it still sucks for a $800 ticket ..

    yep bt is pricey compared to a sticker, but rfid could be even cheaper soon ...

    well you need a powerful scanner in your pocket to see passive tags 10-15 meters away ...

    so I agree ... and as I told I spent hours playing with the cybercode stuff on the pixbook ... it is great fun ... and could work ...

    Sony tried something on the vaio picturebook ...
    it was really cool, we played a bit with putting cybercode all around an environment (a friends apartment) so the picturebook knew "where it was" and executed commands based on the environment ....

    never seen a linux equivalent (as it only ran on MS stuff I never really got interested)

    nice try sony, but the technology died ... :(

    cellphones : dunno... why would I want to hope from an "offline commercial" into an online commercial ?
    not commercial ? well I cannot picture a farmer running around with a picturephone, getting online info for his cows ... though I can imagine cybercode styled cows running around :)

    I want to see my tv interfaced to a computer first in a decent way (eg serial interface spits out urls and other stuff related to the program ...
    (ahm well good old europe has teletext)

    wouldn't it be easier just to put rfid/bluetooth on those items which would broadcast ?

    If you do not mind small mem, and monochrome, the ipaq 3100 (monochrome series would be a good bet) ..
    you save battery time on the mono display, you can put linux on it if you wish ..

    I would put a mem+battery upgrade on that ....

    I wish there was a rugged monchrome (greysale) pda with long battery time, and on the fly cpu scaling for battery time, and a bit slimmer thatn my current 3870 BRICK ...

    ahm did i forget a jog-dial (like on the clie) for easy one hand operation ? I really have to throw up when I see mr manager getting the PDA out of the pocket, dropping everythin, because using a pda is still a 2 hand operation !
    ahm on my IPAQ there is the screen protector, that makes the mess more messy :)

    maybe a press-a-button-fold-out double screen pda like my DonkeyKong game from nintendo (cca 20 years ago)?
