Though sometimes I wish I left Wince (M$ pocketpc) on my (38xx) IPAQ, most of the time I a happyly type pppon on the tiny (virtual) keyboard to fire up my GPRS-over-ppp-over-bluetooth-over-my_t68i while sitting on the toilet doing my morning business (eg reading slashdot.org/palm/ or checking if my site stats & email)....
While I am pissed I could not get certain things working under linux on the ipaq, I am happy with the flexibility to change whatever I want.... and run things however I want them....
so why do I bring that up ?
I have a t68i, my wife has a nokia 6310i and I tried win2k and XP to sync these monsters for hours (if not days) and I always found the "easy to use" way the most frustrating, because I always need it a different way..... and because everything is so simplified, you cannot point a program to eg a bluetooth port to use it as serial...
and that's when linux comes in... when you have the freedom to use/dev/rfcomm0 instead of always-changing-never-working com1-4(+some virtual crap) and that's when you can comfortably run ppp-over-bt, so you can rsync, and pipe the whole mess into your custom perl script that inserts it into mysql....
the question is: do I want and other device that I can hack-to-hell?
YES:) I want....
I just wish the manufacturers give full spec to everything so I do not end up without bt or infraport or whatever...
hi ! This is shady.. you cannot find exact information on what % they pay after each click, however with a friend we estimated it to be between 35-70% I can see $3-3.5 clicks on my financial sites (what I get after the click), while I can see an average click price of $1.5 on my medication related sites (meds will be cancelled by google in mid may by the way).
I do not have (high)tech related sites at this time, so I have no idea how much a click is.
so we have no idea honestly... I can see a steady $20-25/ day on 5-6 sites (alltogether)... traffic for these sites are around 3-3500 uniq visitors a week (also alltogether)
that brings back some of what I spend on ads, so I am happy with it...
I hope it gives you an estimate... If you need more info drop me a mail slashdot@healthhangout.com or use./ PM
If you ran adsense on any of your sites, you might have known, that there are clicks that cost the advertiser $4-$5 bucks or sometimes even more.
If you have an adwords account try to bid on the keyword "debt consolidation" or "viagra" and you will realise, that with a 2 dollar bid you are nowhere near the 3 first pages !
PPC is expensive in the credit card/debt/financial stuff market and super-high in the online pharmacy business...
I use PPC (pay-per-click) advertising to some of my sites/projects, and yes, I hade to waste some hundred $$ before I knwe where to advertise...
Lots of PPC companies have affiliate programs and some lowlifes are running "get paid to surf" programs. You have to go to sites, and sign up, or just click the ads and receive a % of the click.
Also there are the clickbots, which are created to generate hundreds of clicks (and no sales of course) on the competitions's ads, until they give up ads.
Newver run expensive ads, especially not on ad networks other than google, overture and pageseeker....
I do not want to get into trouble, so I better do not mention the ones that RIP you off badly.. bringing completely useless traffic in exchange for your $$.
(just to make it more clear, someone comes from a search for "cheap bikini" and leaves the site clicking on "men's socks" , and hundreds fo these under each other from the same PPC engine)
I especially pick on one, the letter "K" company with the chineise kind of pasta in it's name...

OK, OK I am getting overwhelmed.... but I hear more and more of that crap every day, and unless it stops for good, we will really end up in deep poo...

I am a software engineer on paper (BS), however instead of development/programming I did network/system administration (linux/*NIX/cisco) since the late 90s for ISPs, for development firms, and lately for online casinos...
ENOUGH!
Partly because at many places I ended up doing stuff I would not wish for my enemies. System administrators end up doing the *all around crap* as soon as they discovered to be able to do more than it's in the contract.... so at one place (ISP) I ended up dealing with foreign customers, registering domains, giving phone support while in the background I was writing system maintenacne scripts.... (not a good idea) At the other place I ended up receiving phonecalls at 5am to get to an other city to fix a crashed windows network (*nix sysadmin remember?)....
Not crying... when you are 22-25 it's fun to do cabling in a 60x60cm vent hole covered with birdshit... or installing microwave antennas in -20C on a rooftop...... or receiving a page that you MUST go to work immediately because someone kicked the plug on a server and now it does not stand up......
ENOUGH... I said again when I started to do networking/firewalls for an online casino... and ended up fixing customer support windows machines, because after fixing everything there were no more crashes/problems on the cisco/linux department...
Enough... so I rented a tiny office with a 128k line... built a little bubble, where no boss, no marketing crew, no-one is bugging me... and I am running my own circus....
for 6 months now I'm living from affiliate programs and occasionally I do stuff for people I know..... I can run my own servers however I want them... ps: actually since I am "on my own" I sometimes make less money than before, sometimes I make more, but at the end I have the uplifting freedom of being able to choose between: "spending the time at the office even if you do not have anything to do" or "going home early just because not feeling so productive today"

I do not spend 5 hours a day in front of games every day, so playing against fanatics was hard enough.... I found out very soon why almost impossible: it's a catch-me-if-you-can game... they ban cheats, new cheats come out...

Ratings on games are important imho, yes a 5 year old might think that grabbing someone out of a car and beating the person with a baseball bat is cool after playing GTA, but I do not think that a grown up is really inspired that way by violent games...
I am a fan of Silent HILL, Fatal frame, and many Rainbowsix3, GTA, and many FPS shooters and fighting games, and I feel the gaming violence entertaining.... however I think it settles down my agression/violence, not improves it...
Yes after playing offroad fury, I ride my ATV/Bike aggressive in the woods.... Yes after playing Silent Hill 3 for 4 hours in the dark I have the tendency to scare my wife just for a laugh..
NO after playing Rainbowsix-3 I won't get a sniper rifle and start playing jungle fight in my neighborhood... and after playing GTA I won't beat up grandpa for his pickup or beat up hookers for their money...
If someone is dangerous, they will get more violence influence from any Hollywood movie, from any local horror-video-rental place.
whitelists are cool, and I think they could work.. the problem is, that people use different mail addresses... even companies tend to send mail from different addresses (normal, could work) and different domains (that's a prob)
what would be needed: everywhere where you sign up (program, newsletter, affiliate program, online store) they should state, where they are sending mails from : (eg sales@onlineeee_store.net) you add it to your whitelist, it works
let's say I sign up for slashdot, I use the address slashdot@mydomain.org (even better, from sales@slashdot I only accept mail to salshdot@mydomain... they sell my address ? no prob...
identity: on top of all these, there could be a pgp signature/checking associated with the whitelist..
all this could be done with simple procmail....
Customers, newcomers? : you run a business, have a form-mail... (that way mail comes from the same address + you can put validation, like machine-unreadable auth numbers like you have at lot of places nowadays...)
these are simple ideas that require less that half an hour of effort and could help a lot....
just some ideas i got reading that...
ps: (I did not see the uni article... before my post (must have been/.-ed, or it's just my ISP) so if I write something that's in there too, sorry
With most SEO companies, you will have to settle to keyword combinations, instead of 1-word searches, and usually you will only get results fro things -NO-ONE-USES- as a search thing.
Here is the simple rule to follow: build content, do not spam, choose keywords and description that describes your site, do not link to banner farms and similar crap.
I just started optimizing my sites, and yes I base part of my business on being listed on google, google ads, inktomi (msn) and other places... and it works, and it is an acceptable business model.... as some people base their business on advertising on let's say Buses.... what if Buses disappear? search engines will stay for a long time, and people will use whatever is free and returns relevant results....
I think if you follow google (or other's) guidelines and optimize with a brain, you can make $$ without scam/spam/dirty tricks.... but that is only my opinion... and experience..
I had a relatively big dish 120cm (4' -for you non metrics) back in europe for some years
It has to be DAMN big rain to disrupt the signal (In Hungary it happened let's say 2-3 times a year) However snowstorms suck bigtime, and In heavy snow I found myself several time on the balcony, scratching ice & snow from my dish in -20C in underwear in the middle of a movie..
Digital channels: good quality to a certain pont, after that, unwatchable (picture stalls like a bad encoded or scratched DVD or divx.. sound skips.. than you see green squares & numbers)
Analog: quality drops with signal loss, but still able to see pics and soud in the heaviest rain/snowstorm
I installed everything myself, It was a polar mount (turns to different geostationary satellites ) polarmount tilts the dish and head slightly moving E or W from so the polarisation sucks...)
my advise: buy/build a non polar mount 2 motor system that turns and tilts...) My friend had 2 same brand receivers on top, and when hitting the remote, the 2 receivers turned the dish's two motors to the desired (recorded) position.... he had a 2.5m dish... I remember watching channels on his thing coming from completely outta footprint sats:)
I agree, that user documentetion is usually poor, and eg with TV-s most people just get confused by 480p or 480i and so...
I think manuals are stupid, because people do not care what they buy.... If someone does not see the different a regular 480i and anything above it, does not need the manual to explain it anyway.
What bothers me really, is the lack of information on whereever you walk in to buy something.. people in the TV store do not know what a 100hz TV is, people selling satellite equip cannot show, and cannot tell if the provided receiver has digital out (opt/coax).... and I could continue....
I think there is a fair option to buy anything simple, you do not use the extras and keep it simple if you want.......
Maybe I am sick but I am always lacking options..... you can buy hanheld with XXX option OR YYY option, but not with XXX and YYY option....
On the other hand... sometimes yes, I am looking for a ipaq3600 kind with HUGE mem and SD slot, but B&W display.... companies cannot make everything as modular as a PC or you will become your own washmachine and gridge systemadmin hacking your "custom crap" all day...
I was amazed the first time I saw applications opening straight from the browser the first time I saw it... for like 5 minutes, than I started thinking how easy it was to write a flawed ppe (pcboard anyone remember?) to run format c:/u/s/autotest... I'm still amazed by seeing how many people did not learn that lesson when their computer got infected via M$ Outlook or M$ IE running crap upon opening a mail or document.
Sure today sometimes I curse when I receive an attachment on a remote machine into my pine mailer, and I curse when ssh is laggy on my overpriced underdelivered cable-net, and sure I received 341 mails from idiots still using infected crap machines...
But sure I was the only one doing my work quickly and going home early while my collegues were reinstalling their m$ machines because they opened the wrong mail, or clicked the wrong link...
I do not even wanna start saying, use a decent system, with simple tools running in USER mode (!=root)... Why? because no one listens! They are amazed when I say that it's free (as beer and as a bird), and that Mozilla/galeon takes 1 day to get used to.. and that openoffice works so much the same, that my wife did not even notice when I replaced m$office to openoffice on her laptop....
Ahm sorry... Might be off topic... I am just continuing my ranting I started in my mother-in-law's kitchen yesterday when I started cursing at idiots flooding my mailbox with worms:)
And why? Because more than half the consoles are equipped with modchips to play pirated games (to run linux too, but that is not tha majority) A game costs $35-50 in the US, when it gets to lets' say Costa Rica, it is $80+ and here the average salary is not $2k+ but under $250. A copy DVD is $10 a copy CD is $3-4..
"yadayada--yada"... I think if they sold originals around the price range of $10-20 they could make a nice profit and all those people who buy copy games would buy the originals, probably doubling the profit in the US, and multiplying it by 20-100 in other countries, where a game costs more than a week's salary..
I hope it is not too off-topic:)
more on the topic: I am pretty interested in Havoc engine (used by maxpayne 2), check their website, they will be used by an other FPS which might have a level editor too, and if something, that would be great for the genre I like (maybe even to make a level for) - survival horror (like RE, Fatal Frame or the silnet hill series) I think half life 2 will use something close to Havoc (a modded version as I heard)
Automated searches on google are not allowed - eg crawling google is not allowed.
Google ads are pretty correct with that: I use google ads, and there is a minimum number of hits that come from crawlers or strangely behaving browsers or automated gizmoz. Once I reported one, they replied promptly asking for remote IP, browser version, part of my access_log, or anything I can provide to prove, that my ads were hit by somethin other than a browser looking for my products/services.
ps:since the click in question costed me less tan 10 cents, I dropped the case, but they were extremely helpful

what would be needed: everywhere where you sign up (program, newsletter, affiliate program, online store) they should state, where they are sending mails from : (eg sales@onlineeee_store.net)
you add it to your whitelist, it works
let's say I sign up for slashdot, I use the address slashdot@mydomain.org (even better, from sales@slashdot I only accept mail to salshdot@mydomain
identity: on top of all these, there could be a pgp signature/checking associated with the whitelist..
all this could be done with simple procmail....
Customers, newcomers? : you run a business, have a form-mail... (that way mail comes from the same address + you can put validation, like machine-unreadable auth numbers like you have at lot of places nowadays...)
these are simple ideas that require less that half an hour of effort and could help a lot
just some ideas i got reading that
ps: (I did not see the uni article... before my post (must have been
With most SEO companies, you will have to settle to keyword combinations, instead of 1-word searches, and usually you will only get results fro things -NO-ONE-USES- as a search thing.
.... what if Buses disappear? search engines will stay for a long time, and people will use whatever is free and returns relevant results ....
.. .. ..
Here is the simple rule to follow: build content, do not spam, choose keywords and description that describes your site, do not link to banner farms and similar crap.
I just started optimizing my sites, and yes I base part of my business on being listed on google, google ads, inktomi (msn) and other places...
and it works, and it is an acceptable business model.... as some people base their business on advertising on let's say Buses
I think if you follow google (or other's) guidelines and optimize with a brain, you can make $$ without scam/spam/dirty tricks
but that is only my opinion... and experience
sure you cannot sniff ssh, but you can monitor the connections and log them ..... ... you just do the same ...
:)
connect to 2038, 6664, 5552,5543 and so on
of coz you gotta be on the same net (or sniffing on/near a router on the way)
if you change the nocking sequence every time based on whatewer algorythm, it is much harder unless someone knows the algo
I had a relatively big dish 120cm (4' -for you non metrics) back in europe for some years
...)
...) .... he had a 2.5m dish... I remember watching channels on his thing coming from completely outta footprint sats :)
It has to be DAMN big rain to disrupt the signal (In Hungary it happened let's say 2-3 times a year)
However snowstorms suck bigtime, and In heavy snow I found myself several time on the balcony, scratching ice & snow from my dish in -20C in underwear in the middle of a movie..
I installed everything myself, It was a polar mount (turns to different geostationary satellites ) polarmount tilts the dish and head slightly moving E or W from so the polarisation sucks
my advise: buy/build a non polar mount 2 motor system that turns and tilts
My friend had 2 same brand receivers on top, and when hitting the remote, the 2 receivers turned the dish's two motors to the desired (recorded) position
I agree, that user documentetion is usually poor, and eg with TV-s most people just get confused by 480p or 480i and so ...
.... and I could continue....
.......
....
... sometimes yes, I am looking for a ipaq3600 kind with HUGE mem and SD slot, but B&W display .... companies cannot make everything as modular as a PC or you will become your own washmachine and gridge systemadmin hacking your "custom crap" all day ...
I think manuals are stupid, because people do not care what they buy....
If someone does not see the different a regular 480i and anything above it, does not need the manual to explain it anyway.
What bothers me really, is the lack of information on whereever you walk in to buy something.. people in the TV store do not know what a 100hz TV is, people selling satellite equip cannot show, and cannot tell if the provided receiver has digital out (opt/coax)
I think there is a fair option to buy anything simple, you do not use the extras and keep it simple if you want
Maybe I am sick but I am always lacking options..... you can buy hanheld with XXX option OR YYY option, but not with XXX and YYY option
On the other hand
I was amazed the first time I saw applications opening straight from the browser the first time I saw it ... for like 5 minutes, than I started thinking how easy it was to write a flawed ppe (pcboard anyone remember?) to run format c: /u /s /autotest ...
... ....
... Might be off topic ... I am just continuing my ranting I started in my mother-in-law's kitchen yesterday when I started cursing at idiots flooding my mailbox with worms :)
I do not even wanna start saying, use a decent system, with simple tools running in USER mode (!=root)
Why? because no one listens! They are amazed when I say that it's free (as beer and as a bird), and that Mozilla/galeon takes 1 day to get used to.. and that openoffice works so much the same, that my wife did not even notice when I replaced m$office to openoffice on her laptop
Ahm sorry
This is sad imho.
... I think if they sold originals around the price range of $10-20 they could make a nice profit and all those people who buy copy games would buy the originals, probably doubling the profit in the US, and multiplying it by 20-100 in other countries, where a game costs more than a week's salary..
:)
And why?
Because more than half the consoles are equipped with modchips to play pirated games (to run linux too, but that is not tha majority)
A game costs $35-50 in the US, when it gets to lets' say Costa Rica, it is $80+ and here the average salary is not $2k+ but under $250. A copy DVD is $10 a copy CD is $3-4..
"yadayada--yada"
I hope it is not too off-topic
more on the topic: I am pretty interested in Havoc engine (used by maxpayne 2), check their website, they will be used by an other FPS which might have a level editor too, and if something, that would be great for the genre I like (maybe even to make a level for) - survival horror (like RE, Fatal Frame or the silnet hill series)
I think half life 2 will use something close to Havoc (a modded version as I heard)
