This is game of whack-a-mole. Those teenagers need to be able to access shared stuff. That access needs to be reasonably open if masses are to benefit from it and it is singple-point-of-failure. Whacking website or proxy is as easy as dropping packets to certain ip address. Obscurity means useleness for millions and win for media companies.
You still need to download data to your computer. No encryption or steganography gets around the fact that any reasonably fast download will be up on radar due to its size.
Obsuscation, Steganography and Encryption is not going to help much either. People of both ends of pipe need to know wtf is going on, and if you want something more than couple of people, it needs to be public.
Efficient sharing is open. Open means vulnurelable. They own pipes, and they own people who make laws about pipes. Best we can do without pipes is sneakernet.
True hope is that those millions will turn to adults and vote for change. Reality is that as they turn to adults, they will have different issues than free music or movies.
> Facing the consequences of your actions. Must be an out of date concept. Quick find me a disease I can use to get out of it.
This is all fine and dandy, but you should actually know what actions are and what consequences are.
Action: Using default password on computer system, looking around and not doing anything harmfull with it. Freaking default password.
Consequence: 50 years of prison.
This simply does not add up. You do not need any disease/poor upbringing/whatever excuses to see this is wrong. It goes right to "cruel" of "cruel and unsusual".
It is most certainly not worth turning taxpayer to back hole that consumes thoudands dollars a year from other taxpayers at very least.
Got it? We are not talking about child rapist here. Hell, murder would net him better sentence. At very least your money will be wasted keeping him in costly prison for year for not real reason. There is not reason whatsoever that he should be put away for his whole life, but be embarassed pentagon.
There are many things to be upset about in this case, but some mental health excuse is so small it is pointless
Why? Even pirating costs something. User has to find copy, download it and get it working (also, he must have lerned how to do each of the three things). His time is not "free". Hell, even intent of pirating something means it is worth at least something to downloader.
Problem is that this worth is way, way below current pricetag and soemthing that typical gaming comany does not "get".
Make service that beats pirating in ease of use and security, be modest with what people have to pay and you are going to covert surprising amount of pirates to customers.
It is just that lost sale is not problem caused by pirates but problem caused by publishers.
For consumer, for all practical purporses Gimp plugin does not exist and PS wins by having feature that Gimp does not.
Why?
It is plugin. As such, you have to know it exists in order to get it. Even worse, you might not even know what you are looking for if you actually look for that function. You can not just discover it while "playing with filters" and your best shot is asking on some forums ("UTFG" being mostl likely reply) if you do not just use clone tool by hand (something a lot more intuitive and going to provide much better results anyway).
Or whole world can start using lojban ( http://www.lojban.org/ ) to communicate with computers.
No parsing problem there, the language was basically developped to be recognized (and understood) easily by computers (and humans) and be without homonyms, irregularities and other stuff.
Adult with normal Sexual Urges that he can not satify and let public know about it is pretty much guarantted to take advantage of someone weak.
Similary, consider good well behaved catholic boy that does not really want relationship and sex with (adult)/(woman). Priesthood is perfect escape route: No more social pressure on "marrying and getting kids", likely to have few likeminded people around, authority power and access to kids... shudder.
Just let normal people become priests instead of sexually frustrated men or perverts.
"It will take at least another 20 years, with adequate funding, to develop a continuous fusion reaction that could heat water, create steam and turn generators at a commercial fusion power plant, she said."
I think we head this one 40 years ago. Guess good ol' fusion will be 20 years in future infinitelly.
But if you want to guarantee that it works and want someone who you can wake up and 3:00 who will fix bug, you buy support. Or you pay them to train your staff to be able to work with it on peak performance. Or you pay commision for new feature.
This is incredibly similar to post-torrent artisty: Artist is paid for "consulting" if there is medium shift, he is paid for live performances and of course, he is paid create new works on commision.
It is basically model of where you only pay for things that are near impossible to pirate it: Good lecture is not replaceable by torrented pdf, neither is dedicated support or live show.
Free stuff to hook you up, pay up if you want quality service. "No guarantee" is not what OS is about, it is what you get for free (just like any closed software that people pirate is without guarantees)
Then you have EVE online where character evolves realtime regardless of whether you play or not. (or even whether you are subscribed if you queue enough stuff). It is also very economy-oriented game and majority of that action takes place outside gameplay time.
It kind of sucks because you can never, ever catch up to veteran from day 1.
Is this yet another american thing about "popular kids" and "high school politics"?
Do you really believe that not seeing X will make you social outcast? Talking about movies-series-music is just crutch to get either break ice or crutch to get along with people who you do not have anything common with. Because frankly, I only ever recall talking movies/music with people in those situations. It is about the weakest of weak bonds.
What does make you stay in touch with people are common insterests, spending time together and caring at least a bit person and common friends.
I'd suggest you stop worrying whether or not you are 'in' and get your ass to some party or start normal conversation.

Alternative view point:
* Dressing in 'poor peoples' clothing will get you ostracised. Is it okay to steal better clothes? * Going to 'poor peoples' pubs will sever you from richer classmates and social touchpoint. It is okay to go to better pub and then run away without paying check? * Not having iPod/iPhone will get you segreageted from peers. Is it okay to steal one? * Can't afford ticket to Avatar and you will be left out when taling about it? Is it okay to sneak in to cinema?
Like it or not, if you lack money, you are going to loose out. Not having expensive toys or latest fashion is not exactly great, but it is how life goes.
You should aim to have friends that are not superfluous enough to care about whether or not you have stuff. How come NA people play those dumb popularity games?
Anyhow, guess we are bit off on what inaproriate is. Showing up at interview at in jeans and tshirt is equal to having "sitting in pub, having fun" photo, no eyebrows raised, you have a life (so what). Showing up in clothing equivalent of "vomitin on someone" photo, that is gonna cost you interview pretty much everywhere.
Chances are, no company is going to fire you for what you do in your free time. Mostly because they can look you up and simply not hire you to begin with.
This is not how it really works. Being yourself is cool if you are applying to 'being yourself' company, but it is not always going to the the case. Easy going does not mean anything to most companies.
See, everyone was young, had drunked adventures and whatnot and propably smoked pot for quite a long time. 60's generation being example.
Do you think that now that they are all adults and propably in big-chair positions that they would be cool with you smoke pot on workplace? They should be enlightened about it and whatnot, they did it themselves, but no, not a chance. Hell, generation of "free love" is suprisingly uptight about sex life of their children.
Getting rid of that facebook image of you and twocolored vomit is the same thing like getting rid of ridiculous t-shirt or getting haircut or getting email address with your real name in front of @ instead of nick or using proper spelling in cover letter. Rite of passage.
Simply put, company hiring you is not hiring teenager on those photos. If you project that image, do not be suprised if you end up on bottom of pile. It is just as if you showed up on interview dressed unapropriatelly.
You are assuming one thing: Economy will work the same in future.
Right now, we are very close to having 4 day work week purely because most of production systems are more efficient and require less human labor.
In fact, most of our current jobs are basically "busywork for masses", I have read estimates of as little as 10% of population needing to work to keep population fed and suplied with goods with currently technology. Only thing that prevents us swtiching to 9leeches-per-person is how money work and that it would not exactly be well recieved by 10% of population.
Should techno-fetishists dreams come true, we will eventually have fusion power and nanomachines able to produce anything we want on command and propably ai to issue those commands.
When you can get pretty much anything you desire for free, instantly and without thinking, you end up having lots of spare time to kill. Ideal situation to get immersted into virtual reality that will once again give you some basic feelings: feeling of achiveing something and feeling of overcoming obstacles. Basically, living in world of sugar, you will desire ballanced whip/sugar combination, game gives it easily.
While (very) few people have immer motivation and be able to function in surplus society, I doubt that majority will trully enjoy it.
> That's what drove people to put a lot of money into building a big ship and risk their own lives on the high seas
What drove them was desire to ensure that their quality of live increases/does not decrease. That is driving force: getting shelter, having food, wooing mate; leaving enough for your offspring so that they prosper. Yep, even bilionares are motivated by this.
If everyone in society feels they are secure enough, lots of driving force gets nulified. If everyone can get anything they want, nothing is going to drive them to do anything even remotelly unsafe.
Explain to me, which corporation is going to fund the development of a leading database?
Explain to me, which corporation is going to fund the development of a leading web server?
Explain to me, which corporation is going to fund the development of a leading programing language?
Explain to me, which corporation is going to fund the development of a leading OS?
Explain to me, which corporation is going to fund the development of a leading application framework?...
Um, coproration in business of making money?
They will always win:
Small fry doing few projects and not paying? Their developers are later going to be employed by someone who will pay for extended support.
Big company? Someone will want their asses covered and pay for support to make sure engine problems do not land on their head, and developers will demand suport for bugfixes/new features/training.
Noone is going to fork their project, as long as they work on it and new kids on job market will have skills in their engine because they were able to mess with it.
And there are always some patches from random basement guys that imporve stuff or fix bugs.
Just because they are gonna give out source for free does not mean they can not make money.
It is their job to care. It is their job to take care of it.
But general population? You know, people whose support you need to fix socioeconomic issues like the on in op?
It is not their job to care or to take care of it. You need to convince then that when there is problem, it is their problem and they should care enough to be pissed about it and help take care of it.
But if you are comming across as whiny bastart that complains about pretty much everything, well, so surprises: you are going to be ignored. See, if you are continually complaining, you are no longer being taken seriously, but rather like background buzz because you always complain about something (and there is no way to shut you up because it is simply impossible to satisfy you).
This is one of the worst interpersonal mistakes that geeks/nerds do: complain loudly about minutae and details and when real issues with huge impact come, no-one listens anymore.
Do not complain unless you mean it. Geek/Nerd community needs to be that silent guy to whom everyone pays attention to when he finally opens mouth to say something because they know it is going to be important. Not comming across as spoiled brat hivemind.
Refuse to buy it. Refuse to crack it. Do not support this game in any way that would endorse it (that includes pirating it btw.).
Instead, go and purchase game that you do not fear will fuck your experience up when drm fails (for any reason).
Make sure developers understand that your only option to playing their game in way you enjoy it is to pirate it and/or crack drm. Make sure makers of games that you find that have acceptable rights management learn that you enjoy and buy their products party because of it. Write a email or two.
Consider this: we can (and do) save many children with birth defects, often we are succesfull enough so that they can leard normal life (and even be oblivious to any issues). Problem is that some of theese defects are hereditary. Guess what? Next generation is worse off as far as ratio of defects is concerned.
We obviously will never do "sparta" thing and kill of children society finds undesirable. Nor will anyone with genetic defect be prevented from having children. Neither is civilized resolution or would be even remotelly popular (would you want to risk your child falling victim to it? noone would.)
Anyway, I would not worry about this particular medical advance. This regeneration propably caused cancer if it got out of controll (cancer with nondiversified cells as medium is quite scarry).

On contrary, I think that is is "wink wink, nudge nudge, btw we have H-bombs now, beware cowards!" anouncement.
Yeah, of course they are farming unsuspecting visitors is long time /. tradition. Not that it really works.

Who cares? If players loose CoO or Sports titles, nothing of value was lost. They will move on.
We had good games long before series of games became to be called "franchises"; players are quite able to enjoy non-holywooded games.
You know what you should do where this happens?
Refuse to buy it. Refuse to crack it. Do not support this game in any way that would endorse it (that includes pirating it btw.).
