  1. Missing the point.... on Is Tableau The Next Google? · · Score: 2, Insightful

"Will this company be successful and become another Google? Read more and decide after looking at an example of database drilling."

The point here is how they look at databases, and the ways they can make the information usuable to all. Similar to how the google search engine searches a massive database to give you a list of relavent websites and ranking them on popularity.

It's the ideas presented, not a $1000 software package that no everyday user needs.

  2. Re:well... on Replacing FileMaker with Free Software? · · Score: 1

I'm not filemaker expert, however from what I recall from FM 5.0 it is NOT a RDBMS, in that to have multiple values for something (IE phone numbers) each one is stored INSIDE the contact table, instead of a seperate table. This makes it a VERY proprietary format that you cannot port to anything using SQL for RDBMS.

The problem here is that FileMaker is moving to a more RDBMS format and the system has to be rebuilt, so why not rebuild it into something that uses the standard RDBMS model instead of filemakers version of it.

Who know's if steam is a packet monitor sending them marketing info, or a keylogger to send them passwords. I highly doubt it is either of these but this is the problem with closed source, and REQUIRED software. If it's the ONLY way to update your game then hopefully that's all it does... but let me just download the patch and click install myself.

Considering the amount of viruses, and spyware out there, it wouldn't be un-believable to think that steam monitors something... even if it's just to see what games you have installed so they may consider making games of the same type/genre.

Essentialy the point I'm trying to make is the only way to remove Internet Explorer is to type
    format c: /y/s/q

Where Bit Torrent and others hurt us in the distribution of proprietary software that requires money for R&D funding. If the funding for R&D disappears then there will be no more new technologies in our future.

    1. Install Windows while connected to my router out to the internet
    2. Install Antivirus while going to windows update
    3. Reboot from AV install and update
    4. Reboot into safe mode to have AV software remove aquired viruses.

Lets review some facts about the Recording industry.

    • Fact: The artists on a Platinum selling album breaks even, while the record label makes over $100,000
    • Fact: On a typical one ear tour as of the late '90s the band would usually make about $250,000+ to divide between them, while the record label would make a mere 10% of that.
    • Fact: Other then rent for the offices, and paying the over paid executives. The record label has no expenses. It is up to the artist to find a studio, rent the studio, and pay for the mixing, mastering, and production of thier albums.
    • Fact: Concert sales have increased since "illeagal" music trading. This is good for the artists, and bad for the record industry.

I say we skip the middle man, and use the internet as the "record label" to represent musicians, and watch them be happier for making more money because people will go to see them live.

And if we create robots to do the manual labour (build houses, vehicles etc...) then people will have the time to do as they desire (become artists, musicians, programmers, whatever) and we would have no need for the RIAA, because the musicians would record stuff on their computers at home, and distribute it through bit torrent (or other P2P application)
