  1. The New Olympic Symbols on Businesses To Be Censored on Use of Olympics · · Score: 1

All you have to do in order to prove this content wasn't actually added by the mod is to take a savegame from GTA: San Andreas with the "Hot Coffee" mod installed and run it on an install of San Andreas that doesn't have the mod installed. You'll notice the sex scenes are still in the game even though it isn't modded. I mentioned this awhile ago... on my own website

  3. Re:No, no, no, no... on EA's Advice is to Uninstall Battlefield 2 · · Score: 1

As much as I love Tribes 2, it was not a AAA title in the same category like EA Games is making Battlefield 2 out to be. As such, buggy patches really are inexcusable. Compare it instead to a game like GTA: San Andreas or Half-Life 2 on a similar budget with a big brand name. When you do that, it falls on its face in terms of quality and stability. P.S. Not every gamer has an Athlon 64 and a GeForce 6600 under the hood either.

  11. The Gaming Landscape Will Change on ESPN And Electronic Arts Sign 15-Year Deal · · Score: 1
Fifteen years is a really long time in the game industry. To put it into perspective, look back fifteen years to see the types of consoles and computers that were available at the time. In terms of technology, this exclusive license will span about 5 computer lifetimes (3 year lifetime).

This type of exclusive deal feels far too anti-competitive to be right... The fact that EA publishes many other games makes me nervous too. What if they start doing these types of deals outside of the sports gaming industry?

  14. Re:Follow-up questions on the above on Open Source Project Management for Beginners? · · Score: 3, Informative
I've been actively following open source game (it's been linked to from Slashdot a couple times) development for awhile and might be able to provide you with some useful pointers.
    • You could get a Linux maintainer, or you could attempt to use the compile features at Slashdot, they have many different types of boxes and operating systems for you to choose from. If you want to support all Linux versions, definitely see about getting a helpful maintainer to keep the source working and be able to compile something that works for a majority of the distributions out there.
    • SourceForge is the largest community, but BerliOS is nice as well as it has SVN, CVS, and most of the other nice features that SourceForge has. Admittedly, the community is much smaller so you'll receive less traffic if you go there (but that didn't stop me from signing up my project).
    • Make an AUTHORS file in the root of the source code and give them credit for what they did. You could also have a credits option in your game and list contributors.
    • Someone else mentioned the meanings of the different terms so I won't go into that. You can however, have as much leeway as you wish when it comes to numbering conventions. Just be consistant!
    • Wikis can be useful for OS projects as BZFlag will show you.
    • If you have legal questions, first look through the licenses at the Open Source Initiative to see what they have to offer. It's a good idea to use your common sense for most things, but if you have really pressing issues you might be able to ask the folks at the FSF (they have some very brilliant minds at work there), or you may have to find and befriend a lawyer. ;-)
Hopefully that helps you out a little bit, development is one of those things that you can run yourself. Just don't abandon your work after a few months. I hate when people make a page on SourceForge and then don't go anywhere with it. It wastes my time and their resources when I go through trying to find the latest game projects.

  21. Re: Experiences with WineX on TransGaming Tagging Downloads to Combat Piracy · · Score: 1
This guy is on to something. What good is a subscription to an emulation project that allows you to play about eight games in all of their glory? Do they really think that I want to waste even MORE money just so I can play a game like Everquest or The Sims on Linux? I'd rather dual boot so I can have a more stable, streamlined experience.

I tried a variety of games on WineX, and the results varied. I ran Tribes 2 on it, and other than some sound glitches and slowdown, it was good... but still nothing compared to Loki's port. Then I went and installed SimCity 4 + Rush Hour. Sure, I could play it in software mode, but I have an Nvidia graphics card that I spent $120+ on, and I would LIKE to use it. About the only real success I had was on the really, really old games like SimFarm and Transport Tycoon Deluxe (with TTDPatch of course!), but even there I didn't have any luck sound. I have a collection of 200+ computer games, and nearly all of them wouldn't even install, or others like SimCity 2000 would fail to start once installed.

I didn't buy WineX because I wanted to see if it would be worth the money and I was very disappointed with the results. Some of the games actually performed better in Wine!! I would have no problem coughing up $5 a month if I could actually play MOST of my 200+ games on Linux and not 5 of them. For now, I think I'll save the money and use it on more worthwhile things.
