  1. Its not about riding Microsoft on Interview with Tony 'Say No to Windows' Bove · · Score: 3, Insightful

I dont believe its about riding of Microsoft, I believe its about giving a fair chance for alternatives. Only with competition will the end user benefit. If Microsoft isnt the one that everyone is supposed to hate it would have been another company. I am not a fan of Microsoft either as I do NOT run any windows software at home, but it was because of Microsoft's so called "crappy software" that pushed the open source community to create these great alternatives such as openoffice.org, linux etc ...

  2. How about game play on The Future of Videogame Aesthetics · · Score: 1

How a game looks does contribute to a small part of how successful a game is, but really I think the majority of it is based on actual game play. Some of the best games ever do NOT have the best looking graphics ie: starcraft, super mario 3, Zelda 2 relative to the new games HL2, Doom 3 etc ... This is why I have been a Nintendo and Blizzard fan for such a long time, they have some the best games developed and they never looked as real or required the latest graphics card to run. The argument should be Gameplay vs Aestheics!

Lets hope apple makes sure their screens a a little more scratch resistant with these video ipods than they were with the nano. My nano is is just over a month old and its scratched to hell just from keeping it in my pocket. I would ahte to have a video ipod and not be able to watch the video cause the screen is scratched. Atleast I can still listen to music on my nano!

  5. Re:Inventors? on Microsoft's Unique Innovation · · Score: 1

Oh, not arguing there, Microsoft was needed to get software where it is today but what the article says is that Microsoft were innovators, Microsoft did not innovate but they did help Progress the software movement from where it was. This article speaks as if Microsoft invented all their software and that they should be praised for this. Windows was was stolen from Apple which was stolen from Xerox. Direct X was bought. So was hotmail and their X Box division. Yes we needed Microsoft to get where we are today with regards to software but did they go about the best way of getting us here, and should we be praising them as much as this article says? IMHO No.

  6. Inventors? on Microsoft's Unique Innovation · · Score: 2, Interesting

When was the last time Microsoft actually developed something on their own? Arent most of their products bought then developed on top of? ie: DOS - Windows, XBOX, Direct X, Hotmail. Microsoft is not a great software development/inventing company they are however a great marketing company.

They pretty much have resigned, they owe the UN billions in dollars, but no one is going to say anything to the states about getting paid. The only reasont he US stays with the UN is because there would be a public backlash. The United States doesnt listen to the UN no will they ever.
  8. PostgreSQL vs Mysql on Sun Eyes PostgreSQL · · Score: 1

IMHO PostgreSQL would be a much better fit, Mysql might work for smaller applications, but it has a lot of problems when it comes to handling enterprise environments. The latest stable version Mysql lacks many of the features that a standard RDBMS should have (Sub queries, stored procedures, views). On the other hand Mysql does have a larger user base because of its ease of use. Again PostgreSQL would be the better fit for Sun, but Mysql does have its applications.

  9. Compromise on Too Many Passwords · · Score: 1

Its about compromise. Having a crazy password policy implemented is going to force the end users to write down their passwords underneath thie keyboards etc, and having a simplistic policy is no good for obvious reasons. What needs to be done is have a policy that is useable and secure. Not only do policies regarding passwords generations need to be put in place but policies about writting them down and leaving them on your desk need to be an issue as well. Computer security has to be both on the computer and the user end.

Thats the thing, if you are running Linux already, I doubt you are going to go out looking for windows apps, you are going to stick with Linux apps. You arent going to go looking for windows apps because someone was able to write a decent emulator? Wouldnt you want applications that ran natively on your operating system instead of adding another layer in a emulator? This argument can now go into platform independent languages IE java =)

Why would the Hotel need to put straight Credit Card information onto the card? This doesnt make any sense. Why wouldnt they just use some sort of key to tie your swipe card to your account on their system. This way if you DO lose your card and it isn't cancelled in time someone who decides to use it can only use it within the Hotel where it can then easily be tracked.

Being from Canada and having both Rogers broadband and Bell's cell phone service I can only see good things from this joint venture. Rogers has been doing alot of buying lately, just a couple months ago they bought Fido's wireless network. One problem I can see arising is support, both companies IMHO have less than mediocre support that and the fact that even though the executives have put aside their differences the actual employees have a slight disshate for eachother because they were the major competitors for broadband service and cell phone service here in Canada. Lets hope that this works out for us all!

Microsoft did help revolutionize the Computer Industry as we know it today whether it was for the good or bad. What I belive is that use an operating system that meets your needs, if you are gonna be playing alot of games and watching movies and surfing the web then sure go with windows , if you are going to be doing some hardcore development where you need access to alot of open source applications and need more control of your system then Linux is the way to go.
