wow, you're pretty pissed about the summary, but how about correcting the poster's misuse of monopoly with oligopoly instead of ranting about how these kids should get off your lawn.

there is something of an enforced oligopoly in the market as only companies that are trusted by default are really usable by web sites serving the general public. the key thing to fix this is to have MS and mozilla trust more root CAs by default and open the market for more competition..

there are some significant barriers to entry into the root cert market, which allow the vendors to charge higher prices than they would be able to if there were low to no barriers to entry. it's simple economics. the most profitable markets are the ones that are difficult to get into, so it's in the economic interests of verisign et al. to keep the barriers in place. that doesn't necessarily mean that there is collusion in the market, but there sure is incentive.

i don't agree that the post is there to shock, it's there to gripe about a mostly closed market and ask for some kind of solution. not a bad issue to raise at all.

what's not to get? rfid implants won't fall off a collar. of course they can be falsified/duplicated, but that's not the point, the point is that it can help people identify a lost pet. you might as well say, why should you have a drivers license, they can easily be falsified and/or duplicated. if you or a loved one were in an accident, would you prefer to have identification that would let people know who you were or should you not bother to carry any since on average they're not reliable? you may be against any kind of mandatory implantation of rfid into people, but open your mind to the possibility that there are plenty of valid and useful applications for the technology.

  10. For a communications company on Blackberry Network is Down · · Score: 4, Insightful
RIM is pretty bad at communicating with their end users. They do not have a network status page. When you call in to TSupport, there is no message indicating a general interruption in service. This is totally unacceptable. I spent two hours on hold last night after checking over a client's BES and not finding any issues locally. That hold time could have easily been reduced to a couple of minutes if RIM had a system in place to notify users of problems. Even Time Warner, which has terrible customer service, has service outage notices as part of the call tree when you call in for support. I would guess that this is a conscious choice on RIM's part, to try and appear as if they never have problems. Bad idea. Customer frustration sets in big time when you don't talk to them during outages.

RIM: Get better at communicating with your client base or they will go elsewhere.

i haven't looked for something similar for desktops, but there's got to be some share/freeware out there that could do it.
