Coke-Sponsored Rover Finds Evidence Of Dasani On Mars
March 24, 2004 | Issue 40â12
PASADENA, CAâ"The Coca-Cola-sponsored Real Rover has discovered evidence that the surface of Mars was once partially covered by free-flowing Dasani, scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory announced Monday.
wow, you're pretty pissed about the summary, but how about correcting the poster's misuse of monopoly with oligopoly instead of ranting about how these kids should get off your lawn.
there is something of an enforced oligopoly in the market as only companies that are trusted by default are really usable by web sites serving the general public. the key thing to fix this is to have MS and mozilla trust more root CAs by default and open the market for more competition..
there are some significant barriers to entry into the root cert market, which allow the vendors to charge higher prices than they would be able to if there were low to no barriers to entry. it's simple economics. the most profitable markets are the ones that are difficult to get into, so it's in the economic interests of verisign et al. to keep the barriers in place. that doesn't necessarily mean that there is collusion in the market, but there sure is incentive.
i don't agree that the post is there to shock, it's there to gripe about a mostly closed market and ask for some kind of solution. not a bad issue to raise at all.
seriously. i never let my clients use anything but cisco pix/asa or maybe an 800 series router as their firewall/router. they never crash, well, not never, but hardly ever...
you're not getting my point. there are numerous applications for rfid that are not inclusive of human implantation, a point which you agree with. at no point was i advocating that human implantation, i was simply responding to your all inclusive knee-jerk reaction to rfid with a sample non-human use for the technology that is useful. the drivers license analogy was to counter your argument that rfid isn't useful as a source of identification, and i maintain that it's just as useful/valid as a drivers license. you should be against the abuse of technology, but not the technology itself...
what's not to get? rfid implants won't fall off a collar. of course they can be falsified/duplicated, but that's not the point, the point is that it can help people identify a lost pet. you might as well say, why should you have a drivers license, they can easily be falsified and/or duplicated. if you or a loved one were in an accident, would you prefer to have identification that would let people know who you were or should you not bother to carry any since on average they're not reliable? you may be against any kind of mandatory implantation of rfid into people, but open your mind to the possibility that there are plenty of valid and useful applications for the technology.
ever notice that the new slashdot site now does the same thing to urls listed in the comments sections? what's the justification? i can't think of a single reason why they shouldn't show the link when you hover.
Well I'll be damned, that's good to know. I wish it had been more prominent in the call tree, information like that should just be presented to you from the start. At least in the future, I'll know to check that option first.
RIM is pretty bad at communicating with their end users. They do not have a network status page. When you call in to TSupport, there is no message indicating a general interruption in service. This is totally unacceptable. I spent two hours on hold last night after checking over a client's BES and not finding any issues locally. That hold time could have easily been reduced to a couple of minutes if RIM had a system in place to notify users of problems. Even Time Warner, which has terrible customer service, has service outage notices as part of the call tree when you call in for support. I would guess that this is a conscious choice on RIM's part, to try and appear as if they never have problems. Bad idea. Customer frustration sets in big time when you don't talk to them during outages.
RIM: Get better at communicating with your client base or they will go elsewhere.
to sum up tfa: poor planning and execution are the cause of problems.
how about an article that makes some recommendations on how to mitigate the problems they identify with virtualization, or point out some non obvious issues?
i picked one up monday at the times sq toys r us, they got a big shipment sunday and didn't sell out that day. they even had units left the monday after launch. also, the nintendo store in rockefeller center gets some daily, but you have to camp the line...
the keyboard customizer utility that comes with thinkpads totally solves this problem. i have it set to require a few second delay before a click to the caps key is recognized. now caps only comes on when i need it, not when i accidentally press it. i do the same for the f1 key to prevent windows help from popping up. it's good stuff. lenovo just added windows keys to the keyboard, but on older thinkpads you can use the utility to remap the ctrl and alt keys to be the windows keys if you miss them.
i haven't looked for something similar for desktops, but there's got to be some share/freeware out there that could do it.
i just keep my bookmarks in a wiki. i can get to them from any computer, and it's my default home page on all my pcs. i can edit it from anywhere i can read it to add new sites. and i can even leave myself a note if i need to. sure it doesn't keep my history or stored passwords, but there's no scary factor either.
they'll faithfully recreate the date rape scene where louis nails betty while pretending to be her boyfriend.
i was recently watching the original with my gf, who had never seen it before, and she was shocked by the casual use of rape as a plot device. i never thought of it as rape when i first saw it; times have changed attitudes i guess.
the laptops are 1 thinkpad, an old powerbook, my brother's new powerbook and my gf's laptop. the only one that's not in regular service is the powerbook, but since it runs 10.4, i keep it around to stay current on osx.
with 6 pcs/servers, 4 laptops and 2 printers it's $99 this month, which is about as low as it goes, and it pushes $200 in the summer with the ac on. my gf's bill is $30 with 1 pc. so it's something like $75/mo for my systems. crazy.
if you're really worried about cost over security, you could go with a vpn solution. get a pix 501 for each remote office and a concentrator for the main office then set up some static tunnels. it's not going to prevent infections from spreading from internal machines, but it will protect them from the outside world. additionally, it will encrypt the data you're sending over the internet. cisco has management tools that will let you easily manage the remote office firewalls from the main office, so you don't need to worry about having experts on site at small locations.
good luck with it.
