  1. He's right! on Bill Gates Reveals Secret of Microsoft's Success · · Score: -1, Flamebait
To some extent, I agree with Bill Gates and I go on to say...you know what? He's right! This is because all other software including software from the OSS world sucks big time.

Look at some of Open Source's so called success projects - Apache, it sucks to get locked down and requires a lot of technical knowledge to get properly setup.

Another one...OpenOffice.org. This one also sucks big time. After almost a decade in development, guys in the OSS wprld have not figured how to get the beast fast, and beautiful enough to grab one's attention.

I am happy to say that the KDE folks appear to get it with KDE 4.0. For the first time, I am happy to note that I will abandon Gnome for KDE after all, even staunch GNOME fan boys have pointed out that Gnome is living in an age of decadence.

Hauppauge cards are supported to some extent but getting their remote controls to work is a pain in the butt, even on MythTV based distros!

In fact, getting the remote control to work is more of an exercise in frustration than anything else.

My current beef with firefox concerns mailto: links. I wonder whether it can satisfactorily handle these links.

Once clicked in the current version of Firefox on windows without a default mail client defined, (I will not touch outlook!), the system fires up 48 instances of Internet Explorer, which in turn says it does not know how to handle the URL!

My hope and expectation is for Firefox to give me an option of defining a mail client or fire-up my GMail. Can anyone whose tested it inform a slashdoter? Thank you.

  9. Firefox devs, please fix these two issues for me. on Mozilla Dev Team On Firefox's Success · · Score: 0, Offtopic
I love Firefox. It is my default browser and has been so since its very early days. These two issues bring me headache bigtime.

1: Please let us be able to teach Firefox how to handle the mailto: links on Windows. This is a pain on Windows XP with all service packs installed (if this helps). In its current form, if one clicks any such link, Firefox will immediately hang, and the system will "resurrect" or come to life with 48 Internet Explorer windows open.

In these windows, will be an error message saying something to the effect that Windows could not find an appropriate program to handle the request.

I know some will say this is a windows problem but to me, I blame Firefox for not being able to handle such a link by loading my GMail log-on page. There used to be an extension for this but it sucked big time.

2: Video and specifically CNN live feeds together with the rtsp protocol are still not handled in a consistent way. RTSP will sometimes work but I have never been able to watch CNN live video feeds in Firefox! Ironically, the commercials preceding the feeds have no issues together with the captions. This applies to the sound as well.

If these issues are fixed, you devs will have made my year!

Otherwise, thank you for the good and solid Firefox browser.

  14. Hope my issues with Fedora are solved on Fedora 9 (Sulphur) Released · · Score: 0, Flamebait
I will recount my I had trouble with the last Fedora Distro.

I bought myself a second hand Samsung ML-2510 printer that Samsung touted as "supported" under some Linux kernel version and later.

I connect power cables, power it up and connect it via USB expecting some prompt but nothing! I check....nothing!

I attempt to use the included driver CD-ROM, so I load it, and nothing happens. This is as disturbing as it is amazing in this USB 2.0 world. Not being timid, I fire up the terminal, navigate to /mnt as suggested by Samsung and I see nothing in there! I note that Samsung might have made a mistake so I navigate to the actual device and there, I see some files. I follow the directions as if I were at /mnt earlier suggested by Samsung and the system fires up some "error 2. Unexpected end of command."

Not really being a Linux newbie, I fix that error and the system then complains of missing SANE, Ghostscript and CUPS packages. I install two of them and on trying again, the system complains of a wrong SANE version.

I then do what I will call an update via YUM to install the latest SANE then I try again. I succeed this time but my printer, which is still powered and connected, cannot be found on any usb ports! Restarting the system did not help at all!

What bothers me are the Linux zealots who think Fedora and Linux are doing wonders in today's world. If I were working on that "other" platform, I would not need any software downloads whatsoever, and the printer would be churning out print work in less than 12 seconds.

Guys, it's [still] pathetic in the Linux world and progress is very very slow. As usual, people are going to blame the distro in question as if that helps mitigate the problem Linux faces.

My verdict on the released Fedora will be out by the end of this week. I hope I will be [pleasantly] surprised.

Sadly, just like on the Linux front, things on this front will get worse before they get better. It's my hope that there emerges a difference as compared to the Linux world where things are well into a decade [of serious Linux use] and we still have no standards on which package manager to use, and which file, with which version should be where on the system...let alone the [version] numbering.

By the way, can anyone tell me what determines the cost of an international call? My provider (Sprint Canada) charges an average of 49 cents/min for a call to Asia though you can use some of the many pre-paid phone cards and make a call at about 7 cents/min to the same destination.

But will will not be surprised if Slackware turns out to be just like the distros I have tried.

If you asked me whether Linux sucks, I'd unequivocally say..."Yes it does, and it does so big time." All because of a remote control that does not work.
