I read the atricle, it sounds realy cool. But isn't 12cm kind of small for use in air trafic controll. "sorry, i can't see your blip because it's behind another blip" I think screen flicker isn't as bad of a thing as size.
Don't be so sure the EU will be a major force in 10 years. It's starting to crack. I was listening to an intrusting news article the other day (marketplace.org) that said the Euro was starting to fall. There were a number of reasons why it was happening, but it made me think, without the Euro being the hot currency European international law becomes marginalized. (money buys influence after all) And if the Euro gets dissolved there goes European economic dominance.
If they do become marginalized they will start taking there legal cues from a bigger economy...I wonder how friendly China will be to OSS, or Brazil...
Thanks. But just to set your heart at ease, I no longer work at that office (I was temp to hire and I had the joy of telling them No, when they offered to hire me) and the talking too was not that stern.
I can't confirm this story but I've had a very similar experience.
I was working at an almost all MS office as a bookkeeper. Most of the accounting was done with Exel, good backups were kept, and the server had UPS. Still, one day a major spreadsheet got corrupted, as did all it's back ups. All the office was in freak out mode, except for me, I downloaded and installed Open Office (I think it was ver 1.0.1) and opened the corrupted spreadsheet. Cut the data out, pasted it into a new Excel spreadsheet and saved the day!
Ironically I was spoken to about installing non approved software...
I'll see it when it hits the $3.00 theater near my house and I'm one of only a few going. That way I can heckel and it will be ok. Infact if I get the right show, hecklers are encourged. It's great fun, especly with a film you enjoy but don't take serously.
You jest, but don't we all live like that. I joke that Paranoia is a Religion. People worship personal information, and before letting it into go into some sort of purgatory, it's destroyed to protect it 'sole' for lack of a better word.
Treating your password like a good luck charm against ID theft, treating your fire wall like a shrine that gets sacrifices of software, and the Death Rights of a hard drive. And, like with most religions, the more devout you are the safer you are.
I think it is the same thing that made the Borg scary, way back in the day. One face, one voice, no individuality. They can't be scard, they can't be talked out of what they do, therefore they are unstopable. Deeply scary is corect
This reminds me of an old car commercial I saw (I think it was BMW). An older German engineer was being interviewed and he said "we developed and patented crumple zones" then some one else said but all cars have them now. His reply was "We never enforced the patent, some things are too important not to share,"
What inventions do slashdoters think are too important not to share?
Also, a tangent, I think an online wikpidia like open cooking database would be a cool project.
I'm going to be majorly irked if next year Enterprise is resurrected on some other network.
Basically this would come off like a major publicity stunt and would make Enterprise even lamer than it is now.
It would be cool if they would bring it back every two years for a five or six episode miniseries, but that would only work if they covered major trek events that are already established. The Romulian war, the Klingon War, First Contact with important groups, like the Trill....but that won't happen...it will be lame.
I heard on the news recently (marketplace.org) that the US economy is being held up by home prices right now, and if the realest estate market crashes the US dolor will be seriously devalued.
Such a devaluing of currency would hurt imports, and so a lot of other countries that sell to the US will have a serous economic slow down (read 'crash') as well.
Perhaps I should convert my savings account &401k to euros?
What would you get if you had a Mac Mini, that worked like a Tivo and could use an iPod to transfer files?
I don't like mac, mostly because I like my toys to require asambly, but that combo would be cool enough for me to want one.
"The Solar Tower concept operates on a simple rule of physics - hot air rises"
The Solar Tower project uses hot air generated in a big green house to spin a wind turbine. It looks like a cool idea if you ask me. Aneway, the point is, not every form of solar power uses photovoltaic cells.
But you do have a point, the chemical cost for photovoltaics right now is very high.
Ok, that is cool. But as I am stuck with an electric stove at home I have a bit of a rant to add.
Electric coils don't heat evenly, and I always get nasty hot spots when cooking. (Yum, burnt on the left side, raw on the right)
To get around this nasty problem I use my cast-iron for almost everything I cook. It's big and heavy and disperses the heat better than anything else I own. If you don't have one, a 12" cast iron skillet is one of the best pan investments you can make.
I was never into B5. It was cool and all, but the plots were so interwoven it never grabed me. (Maybe if I saw it from day one things would be diffrent)
Aneway, will I need to do any serous catchup before this movie makes sence.
BTW, the SCI-FI Icon is a guy from the original Star Trek. w00t! Sory, trekey moment has passed.
As a food geek, I'm impresed. If more recepis were written out like that I know more people who would relise that they didn't need to be slaves to processed food.....your right, who am I kidding?
yes the GPL is the code of the code monkey, code for the coder, opperating instructions for the operation...Ok, I'll go away now

Oh, and one last thing. LET IT DIE ALREADY!

Joking aside, paranoia dose seem to be part of american culture.

The last epesode of TNG had a point to it. Too bad they didn't just walk away then.
Are you a slashdot reader? Do you have a Slashdot account?
Ok, let's look at the trend E-whatever I-whatever Whatever - Mini Next it will be the IEMini!!!! Your right, it needs to stop

So your right, it's fictional, but also funny.
