I guess i'll need to start running FireFox on my TiVo so i can use AdBlock?
besides TiVo is an open-source thing, if they decide to add that feature i'll just change it.
also, i don't used the fast forward button. you can use the >| button as a 30 second skip by pressing the following buttons:
Select Play Select 3 0 Select
and it will unlock the 30 second skip, it makes fast forwarding through commercials easyer (in my opinion)
putting banner ads on my TV is really agrevating, thats why I dumped Comcast Digital Cable (3 seconds after install) and desided to get DirecTV (2 years later)
ya, but in that case you don't have tons of people downloading MP3's off kazaa, and it's not really Broadband, it's prolly only got a few kilobits of bandwidth,
a word of warning if your planning on upgrading Firefox, some.9 extentions don't work with 1.0
Ones i found don't work: * Allow Right Click * BugMeNot * Down Them All * Googlebar (and maybe a few i forgot) some update automaticly, but sometimes you need to go to http://update.mozilla.org/extensions/ and do it manually.
but i like the "find in page" bar they have now, and the built in RSS notifier, it also has better integration to ThunderBird
Thanks Mozilla! Great browser! and a great mail client!
Thunderbird does have excellent spam filters. and it also prevents spammers from knowing that your still checking your email by preventing remote images and scripts.
Rig the car so you can open it from the outside, but not from the inside, rig it so you can't roll down the windows, leave a set of keys in the ignition, but when they turn the ignition, have it set an alarm off, but not have the engine start.
OR....
If you DO want to injure him, leave the keys in the ignition, and rig it so as soon as the car hits 45MPH he gets a dose of peper spray in his face.:-D
There used to be a product called InkLink, where you clipped a reciever onto the top of a notepad, and wrote with a special pen, and it would be able to transfer everything you wrote into your PDA. (Kinda like NoteTaker) But the website of the manufacturer http://www.siibusinessproducts.com/ doesn't have it listed as a product anymore, but it was in my PDA's user manual as an accessory.
and TablePC's are pretty cool.
I think we are getting closer to a "paperless office", just look how much more we use email now.
The problem is, theres no fast way to enter text but still have a small device.
Because, not everyone is gonna switch to it, no matter how hard we beg, there are probably parts of the internet that haven't been updated in years. The thing to remember is people are lazy, if everything is working OK for them, they don't want to mess with it.
I like Intel's new concept. Alot of the internet is still running old hardware, you can't just change the internet, because it's impossible to change all the routers/etc at once but if they do it this way, they can just wait for the old internet to deteriorate.
but does this article have anything to do with "Internet2"? i'm a little confused, because the description sounds like Internet2.
Actually, out of all the Major Satellite Providers, VOOM uses the most compression, because they only have 1 satellite and very little bandwidth. DishNetwork uses alot of compression, they only have 2 satellites DirecTV actually uses the least compression out of all the Major Satellite providers, (they have 3 satellites and have the most bandwidth)
So just because something is HD, it can still be wicked compressed, and you might be better off with a standard signal.
I seem to agree that Open Source Developers are unsung heros. ex: many many people contribute to mozilla whatever they can. But yet their names arn't anywhere to be found. (i'm prolly not looking hard enough, but it should be in the "about" window)
To: all Open Source Developers THANKS! WE APPRECIATE IT!
I think all this standardization is useless, i don't see why a person who's going into Computer Science, or Electrical Engineering, is required to do the same things as someone going to lawschool.
I think many kids by time they enter 9th grade, they know what they want to do, so their courses should reflect what they want to do for a job.
Not all kids think the same, not all kids learn the same, not all kids work the same and this "NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT" just makes the problem worst, it requires standarized tests.
TiVo's OS is Linux based, you can download the source code: http://tivo.com/linux/linux.asp
I'm not sure about all TiVo's but mine has a USB port in the back (and most of the new ones do) but there are several books and online guides (one book that i know of "Hacking the TiVo")
But you can pull the MPEG2's right off the TiVo and on to your hard drive, and then it's onto the DVD burner from there.
However, I don't know if this NetFlix thing is actually going to send the entire DVD to your TiVo (with the menus and deleted scenes and stuff) or if it's just going to be movies only.
I have DirecTV and TiVo, and they already have "Starz on demand" where you choose what movie you want.
If you order pay per view, or record something on Starz, you can record it onto a DVD, but it might not have the deleted scenes and stuff.
Also with a TiVo, there is something called the "showcase" and if you go into the "showcase" menu it has a few short video clips, (all junk like commercials and stuff)
But I'm not sure if this is real big news, there have been all kinds of movie services in the past. (Pay-Per-View, Starz, HBO, ShowTime, On-Demand) (KaZaA)
But if this new service is going to send the entire DVD, (deleted scenes and all), it will be pretty cool.
I remember, i used to have to start IE all the time, now I am able to use FireFox non-stop and very very rarely need to use Internet Exploder (something that was impossible 9 months ago),
I think part of the problem with people switching to mozilla/firebird/firefox was that "it's too much of a pain in the (rear end)"
I think people are starting to realise that FireFox is now better (in most cases) than Internet Explorer.
I know people (myself included) that went from Netscape to Internet Explorer (because everything was MS friendly code) and now back to FireFox (not so much regular Mozilla).
Firefox has made tons of improvement in the past 9 months. and I know plenty of people in that 9 months that have started using FireFox. (and i started using FireFox more) (not to mention it is more secure)
So i do believe this story, FireFox is growing!
There are a few things that will be able to convert any IE user to firefox:
1. Make a "TRY ME!" program, allow it to run without installing anything (just so people can try it)
2. Bundle a few Extentions in with the FireFox "TRY ME!"(like AdBlock)
3. Have a tutorial that shows off the features of FireFox, (Firefox has so many features, I'M STILL LEARNING) Show the people every little feature of FireFox.
4. and the last thing: Add a file manager to it
(If you haven't) Try FireFox today, and if you like FireFox try to convert 3 people to FireFox.
I think it would probably be better for them to have a bunch of smaller wifi hotspots, arranged in such away that there is WiFi everywhere. so at least they can track someone down to a small area.
yahoo did the same thing

about 1 in 400 americans is a ham radio operator.
about 1 in 400 people in the United States is an amateur radio operator.
ya, but in that case you don't have tons of people downloading MP3's off kazaa, and it's not really Broadband, it's prolly only got a few kilobits of bandwidth,
Yeah seriously, I know plenty of hams who have long commutes to work, all of them say they would be able to make the trip if it weren't for ham radio.

It looks like it came from a game called "Virtual Springfield"

I wasn't even able to get cable internet untill early 2001, no wonder it's trippled.
It doesn't suprise me, cause i was one of the first people i knew to get Cable internet in my area, now everyone has it.

a little math
5 years * 365 days in a year * 24 hours a day = 43800 hours in prison
$158,000 / 43800 hours = $3.60 an hour
or
5 years * 365 days in a year * work 8 hours a day = 14600 hours of work
$158,000 / 14600 hours = $10 an hour (if he works 8 hours a day)

not sure, i never really played with it, i'm not very good at C/C++
There is a book called "Hacking the TiVo" thats pretty much "THE BOOK" for TiVo mods.
