You make a good point, but also seem to be ignoring the casual gamer crowd. These people aren't going to buy a dedicated machine, but might by a couple of games from $10. This market could be huge. Also, with the iPhone, you have a huge market for non-game applications, like cooking, etc...
They are not cutting him a discount. They put aside the shares when they are $10. So it doesn't matter if they go up to $1000, it isn't costing the company anymore, except in opportunity cost. They don't have to come up with $990 to pay the different, they just miss out on making $1000 instead they make $10.
Perhaps sentience can only arise as a result of our brains being "jump" started in some way (cosmic radiation, genetic preprograming or whatever)?
