The current setup for this machine is an AMD 4850e w/4gig of DDR2 800 running 64bit OpenSuSE 11.1. The motherboard in use is a hand me down from my desktop and doesn't have onboard graphics, this doesn't help with the power as I ended up putting in an old ATI X1600Pro. I plan to replace the motherboard or maybe the graphics card and add a UPS to the office when money becomes available. I also have 1x1TB, 2x500GB, and 1x300GB hard drives in there. So at 113W under full load I'm happy. Right now I only have 1 UPS in the house to handle the router, voip adapter, and telephone in case of power failure, but thankfully we haven't had a single outage in the two years since we bought the house. I also run FAH on my desktop using the GPU client on a HD3870, and I have it here at the office on three machines, two of which have to stay on 24/7 anyways.

One of the things I did to resolve this at my home was to build a reasonably powerful 100W server. I use this machine to serve video to my PS3, as a Samba file server, and a few other things, but since I already wanted it on 24/7 I also run the smp package for folding at home on it. Total power used is 118W per the killowatt.

I'm not sure if your argument fully stands up. My understanding from the few classes I took a year or three back really left me with a different view. Firstly, at the time this amendment was written the world was very different and the need for a well regulated militia was very real. State and local militias ended up being the first line of defense for their communities as the Army would take a week or so to show up. Second, firearms where a daily necessity for individuals who needed them to put food on the table. Harris Teeter, Safeway, Wegmans, and Whole foods didn't exist yet. Lastly we also should look at the technology involved. A firearm of that time could be fired 2 or 3 times in one minute by a trained professional. When I carried an M249 back in my infantry days that I was good and could actually fire only a single round at a time. I however much preferred to lay down 5 to 7 round bursts. All that aside, I have no problem with gun/firearm ownership, but your average redneck doesn't need an SKS or a 50 cal to bring down some dear.

Odd. I currently run a small shop, and we have pretty much the run of the place and complete freedom so long as the work gets done and we aren't browsing porn on the company internet (webfilters are the only check they have on us). When I took over I didn't change anything that had been in place, and one of the oddities was that games and movies are allowed. So it isn't uncommon to find movies being watched late in the week, and the occasional multi-player match of Supreme Commander or the like. We've even had someone bringing in a PS3 or Xbox 360 on Friday. But Monday - Wed when the work needs to be done, you won't see any of that. Also if a request comes down the pipe on the down days everything else gets dropped. We also don't provide the consoles. More then anything else, I think the downtime, and the fact that the guys know this is a privilege that can vanish, is in and of itself the motivator. Not the games or the chance to sit in an office being payed to watch DVR'ed shows. As long as productivity and quality stay high I won't change a thing. (I do enforce one rule, keep it clean and keep it legal. No NC17 or pirated material in the office, period) and this isn't my first gig, just the most relaxed. We also have almost 0 employee turnover, do you know how that looks at the end of the year?

I don't think that really covers it. What we have here is one game. Sort of the Coke or Pepsi thing. If enough people just don't buy Spore but keep buying games in general, then someone will get the idea. To further refine it, if consumers keep buying non-DRM'ed games (Sins of a Solar Empire) then EA will definitely get the clue. Spore is just one game among many, and it has DRM. So do Mass Effect, the upcomming Command and Conquer, and I don't know the status of Bioshock anymore. One key item though is to not buy it regardless of platform. It doesn't do any good to buy the PS3 version and ignore the PC, that just leads the execs to think PC gaming is dead and thus stop developing for one platform and save the subsequent development costs.

Something else interesting is that if you read Forbes, the level of piracy can be fairly well modeled. They know to a degree how many and how quickly the copies will be downloaded. Spore didn't follow those models at all. So, the companies that monitor that knew right away that something was off. At the end of week one, Spore had already exceeded a full month of downloads for similar large launch games.

Now, not to argue too much. The key differences between my XP desktop vs. my SuSE 10.3, kubuntu, and EEEXubuntu machines is that XP needs to be updated about 2 or 3 times a month and rebooted about once week if I leave it on 24/7. SuSE and the 'buntu family receive updates on a daily or every other day basis. However my uptimes is roughly 72 days for SuSE and 8 days for Kubuntu. EEEXubuntu is shut down three or four times a day as unlike my MacBook Pro and very much like my old dell laptop suspend and sleep don't seem to work. In conclusion both systems have their annoyances. I've yet to encounter a major issue related to dependencies which either Yast or apt-get hasn't sorted out for me, and neither has destroyed my systems. On the other Hand a well set up XP desktop, which does take three times as long to get running, is stable, and if properly secured doesn't get hammered with spyware or virii. System maintenance can also be scheduled for 3am, when even I'm alseep most of the time, or 2pm when I'm at work.

I use multiple desktops to help alleviate the crowding, but for the most part the 800x480 resolution works out ok. It surfs the web with Firefox 3 (Beta) and opera rather nicely. F11 to go full screen, Amarok plays all my music, and VLC handles just about any video that I can throw at it. I'm considering how to install SuSE 10.3 on it, as that is my preferred distro right now.
