It really just depends on the chipset. Ubuntu, SuSE, and Fedora all install on my Nforce 430, I believe...have to double check, chipset based board like a dream. Then won't boot if I don't pass the no acpi command during boot. There is always some odd quirk.

On a 1.5Ghz G4 Powerbook with 1.25GB of Ram, I routinely had to close applications completely (one of very annoyances I had with OS X) to avoid slowdowns. But, yes, OS X, and Linux both handle multiple apps much better then XP or Vista. CD.DVD burning would normally slow everything down to a crawl on most of my single core machines. K3B does not as much, but I know when burning an ISO and then checking my email on the 3400+ K3B completely locked up, made a nice coaster.

Over the last 5 years I have moved from Athlon 1800+ to a 3400+ to a X2 4400 and now to a X2 6000+ (Had a lot of overtime). I also had and still have a P4 Mobile 3.0 w/HT laptop from Dell and now carry around a Macbook Pro (Core 2 Duo 2.16). 7 years would only add a K62 450 to the list. I've since donated the 1800 and the X2 4400 to family, but my 3400 is still in the office, now running OpenSuse and doing all of my file and media hosting work. The one thing I noticed following the move to a dual core machine was that the number of applications I would have open at one time increased. I tried this on the old Dell the other day when I needed to update it and tried to do some additional work while sitting there and it was painfully slow compared to my newer machines. On my desktop or even my Mac I can have 3 or 4 apps open, a dvd burning, and music playing. This is not the case on the single core machines.

I think a bigger issue for Apple was the lack of a PPC processor for their laptops, and that the G5 was falling behind in the desktop market in terms of performance. IBM all in all could have cared less, what is selling 3 million processors a year, give or take, to being the designer and manufacturer behind the processors in all of the current generation of gaming consoles.
On top of this Jobs knew that the laptop line was and is Apples biggest seller, and being stuck with their G4 line up when the x86 world was moving to the core duo and later the core2 would basically have spelled the end, even Apples most die hard fan would have been hard pressed to try and explain how a 1.5Ghz G4 could outperform a core 2 at 2.16. I have both, and while the G4 has a lot fewer quirks, it doesn't stack up in performance.
I never knew Apple to suffer from hardware shortages so much as as from an aging platform.

Now, I know for a certain fact that we have enough problems protecting it here, do I really want it being handled by a third party subcontractor working for a offshore contractor who may or may not provide an adequate level of protection?

We've been living together for about two years, when I bought the ring about a week ago my mother (The devout religious one) started sending me all this crazy literature about family planning. And that was in there. My girlfriend and I had what I consider to be one of the best laughs we've had in a while, at least once I found a good excuse for why my mother would send us all that stuff. The number of times women had come into my now-former stepmothers clinic and said, "But we counted" or "She just had her period right before we did this". There is only one 100% effective way to be sure and several 99% effective meathods. Personally, I believe in using at least 2, that way I have redundency.

That is one take on matters. I had Cingular and left them at the end of my contract because I couldn't make calls between 6 and 8pm due to an overcrowded network. We also had a lot of dropped calls. I bought a second phone at full price because they claimed it was the phone, then they just told me that the market was oversold. We switched to T-Mobile, have great coverage, real support, and we don't drop calls. The price is roughly the same, but I think we are finally getting what we paid for. I've also used an old unlocked Nokia (From the former AT&T wireless, pre Cingular buy out) on both networks. Some later sims are not supported in it, but then it is a back up phone.

My 12in Powerbook on the other hand is still running well at 2 and has never been returned.
My 500mghz (Used) G4 Cube is going on 6, and running well.
My 500mghz (used) G3 iBook is also 6, I replaced the hard drive (never, ever again) because the one it had was too small.
My MacBook (Core Duo) was just sold, bought August last year, sold due to upgrade to (Free)MacBook Pro (Core 2).
And of course my PC Desktop hasn't given me a moments trouble, but the only original part is the case and 1 DVD-Rom.
All in all, OS X on Apple Hardware has provided me a much better experience then my Purchased PC counterparts. When I control what Hardware I put into the machines on the otherhand I can't say there is any difference outside of OS X.
