Apple is in the Apple business. Adobe is in the windows business now. What Apple did with finalcut is great, compared to the POS that is premiere. Even VegasVideo is better than premiere.
You're comparing individual item retail prices against a prebuilt system? I could go to any trusted, local beigebox builder in my area and pay less than $1900 for a built up system with a 3 year warranty.
My public library has loads of DVDs for loan for free (hey, it's a public library). Problem is there are huge waiting lists and you can only borrow for 2 days. When your turn comes up on the wait list, you have only 2 days to pickup. This is a problem when, say, 4 or 5 movies come up for me at the same time. Does fair use allow me to "timeshift" the viewing of those DVDs by dropping them into my media center harddrive for later viewing?
I'm sick of all these Nitendog "owners" showing up at our kennel club meetings. And then they get pissed when my boxer sniff and nips at their DS. Sheesh, get a real dog if you don't want bite marks in your DS...
