Agreed on principle, but I'd attribute the Renaissance more to the decline and fall of the Byzantine Empire. Many Greeks, including great scholars, fled to Italy in the 15th century, both before and after 1453. They played a major role in bringing the classics back to Western Europe. You're right about Arab science, though.

Sorry, boss. The TURKS, not the Mongols, were stopped at Vienna. The Mongols didn't quite make it to Constantinople, and in the north got partway through Poland, I believe. GP was right about Muslims too: yes, they made it to Spain, but they were halted in their northward march in the Caucasus for a long, long time, in part because of Georgian resistance.

I think exactly the same thing every time I see one of these stories. You even have the same solution that I have... Let the punishment fit the crime. Paying for their crime, literally, is a far better solution than jail time, which only costs society. Especially if the price they have to pay is, say, double the amount of monetary harm they caused. That should serve as something of a deterrent. Jail should only be for violent criminals, people who present a physical threat to individuals or society. Glad to find I'm not the only one who doesn't start foaming at the mouth whenever spammer cases come up. Eightyford, I salute you.

Why does it have to be in .DOC? Because professors tend towards the old and stodgy and don't want or see the need to change to a different format about which they know nothing (simple though it is to learn). And this would be a very silly thing to pick a fight over. A few seconds of inconvenience on your part? You can handle it. It probably takes less time than explaining to a professor what OO.o is in the first place, where to get it, and stuff like that. Not worth the effort to flout the de facto standard. As a student myself, I do just this: compose in OpenOffice.org and export to Doc. No problems with formatting yet.. except when pictures are involved.

I actually did a one-man show of LotR in my high school before I graduated last year... or rather, of a few vignettes from it, since I only had about 5 minutes to do it in. Never heard of this guy, but mine with its 3 scenes (A Long-Expected Party, The Council of Elrond, The Bridge of Khazad-Dum, culminating in me leaping off the stage) was enough of a hit that I got a standing ovation and was crowned Lord of the High School (Ah, high schools.. how cheesy). The best part was throwing costume after costume on and off, like when I alternated with every line of dialogue between the staff and wizard hat in one hand and the fiery robe and whip in the other... I'll try a full show sometime, I think.
