One possibility that he was playing chicken with google and his software really didn't work as advertised. He probably figured that to an individual, $150k is a lot of money, but to google it is the proverbial fart in a windstorm so they would just let it slide under the table rather than generate lots of press. However, he figured wrong and even though google isn't pressing charges(perhaps due to the fact that they would reveal more information than its worth) the huckster still got just deserts: he did spend some time in prison and his name is pretty much ruined forever. Would you want to hire the guy who tried to defraud google out of $150k? Can't imagine it would help his job prospects any.

Sometimes brevity is a virtue.. Yes you can search, and the tools we have today are incredible, but ultimately there is a big pile of information to slog through, and the less slogging you have to do to get to information you want the better.

It's akin to "feature bloat" in computer programs. Yeah some of those whiz-bang features might be useful to a handful of people, but to the majority they just clutter up the interface and can potentially slow the program down. Encyclopedias should give you a brief overview, ie what most people want to know, and then point you elsewhere for more information if you desire it.

The fact that that got modded up is proof that slashdot is in the the throes of groupthink. I don't run windows, I use Linux at work. I'm not a "microsoft shill" but the groupthink on this site is getting REALLY old. Want a story accepted? Just go on a psuedo-intellectual rant that contains the words "open source", bash Microsoft, or mention the RIAA. Guess what, the world of technology is MUCH wider than that, and most of the stories on slashdot have little to no real consequence. But stories of real consequence rarely to never actually get discussed at slashdot because they don't conform to the groupthink.

Microsoft has issues, but this isn't one of them. Not to mention the language the submitter used is unabashedly anti-microsoft. Articles like this just go to show that slashdot editors will accept ANYTHING that remotely supports their groupthink. An users like yourself just gobble it up while denying there is any groupthink going on.

Because the Chinese know how to effectively dangle carrots. They keep paying lipservice to going after knockoffs, but at the same time in order to actually keep foreign companies in China they offer cheap labor and constant promises of how much Chinese consumers(all 1.3 billion of them) will love their products after they establish a presence in the country.

Meanwhile, the government does whatever they think will best benefit the Chinese nation as a whole. If that means pirating products, so be it. They know Samsung won't pull out of China. It extends to other areas as well. Why do you think proctors of standard exams(such as the GRE) usually turn a blind eye to rampant cheating? Simple, because the government wants to send as many students abroad(often at the expense of foreign governments) as they can to bring back as much knowledge as possible. They don't care if it's unfair to others because those "others" are actually the competition.

I don't think porn is morally wrong, but I do find people that get on high horses to be extremely abrasive. Including myself :P

  20. Re:What is morally wrong? on China Jails Porn Site Leader For Life · · Score: 1

What is morally wrong is to impose your own morality (like porn is bad) on others.

According that definition, you are also morally wrong because you are saying that it is morally wrong to say porn is morally wrong, ie imposing your own morals on people. As long as they don't get the government involved, who really cares if someone says porn is wrong. If they want to go on their little crusades, let them. Want to make "porn rehab centers" and whatnot, who cares. They want to boycott businesses that deem "immoral" then all the more power to them I say. It's their right to call something immoral just as it is your right to indulge in pornography containing consenting adults.
