or if you just don't use/know about bugmenot (w00t karma!)

A Los Angeles Times experiment in opinion journalism lasted just two days before the paper was forced to shut it down Sunday morning after some readers repeatedly posted obscene photos.
On Friday, the paper introduced an online feature it called a wikitorial, asking Web site readers to improve a 1,000-word editorial, "War and Consequences," on the Iraq war.
Readers were invited to insert information, make changes or come to different conclusions. The model was based on Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia where anyone can add facts or update information.
"It sounds nutty," said an introduction to the wikitorial in Friday's paper. "Plenty of skeptics are predicting embarrassment; like an arthritic old lady who takes to the dance floor, they say, The Los Angeles Times is more likely to break a hip than be hip. Nevertheless, we proceed. We're calling this a 'public beta,' which is a fancy way of saying we're making something available even though we haven't completely figured it out."
What they had not planned for was hard-core pornography, which the paper's software could not ward off. Its open-source wikitorial software allowed readers to post without vetting from editors, who could take down posts only after they appeared. Any contributor who persisted in bad behavior could be blocked.
During most of Friday and Saturday, readers thoughtfully altered the editorial. By Friday afternoon, hundreds had weighed in. Some did add profanity but just as quickly a Web master from the paper took it down.
"Nothing bad happened really until after midnight on Saturday," said Michael Newman, deputy editorial page editor. At 8:32 p.m. Saturday, a posting on www.Slashdot.org, which bills itself as "news for nerds," directed readers to the Times wikitorial.
"Slashdot has a tech-savvy audience that, to be kind, is mischievous and to be not so kind, is malicious," Mr. Newman said. "We were taking stuff down as soon as it went up and staving them off. Finally we had to go to bed. Someone called the newsroom a little bit before 4 a.m. and said there's something bad on your Web site, and so we just took the whole site down."
The paper put a note on the editorial page Web site explaining the disappearance and thanking the "thousands" of people who logged on.
Andres Martinez, editorial page editor, said: "I was heartened by how seriously people took it. I was really impressed by the level of high-minded participation. It's not a total shock it ended up this way. Now we will evaluate what this means."
Imagine if Google actually implemented gmaps and Google local on their mobile site. You could get directions on the road, figure out where you are and plot your course from there. Google maps + mobile compatability = alternative to personal GPS device.
Now imagive if Google also implemented Google Local. You would NEVER have to ask for directions anywhere again. That is, until you hit a dead spot for your cell phone carrier.
This reminds me of a story that my old middle school typing teacher once told us during class (mind you, this was back around 1992-1993).
When our school finally got new computers, we had been using old Apple IIe's and some of the ORIGINAL mac's up until this point, in the library, the administration decided that it would be a good idea for the typing teacher to teach the rest of the faculty the basics on computing. She was going over how to start up the computer, and what an operating system was, etc. While she was explaining to them what the mouse was, she held it up and said, "now grab the mouse and move it to the icon on your screen and double click".
A few of the teachers said that theirs wasn't working so she went back to see what the problem was. It turned out that those teachers were, you guessed it, LITERALLY PLACING THE MOUSE ON THE MONITOR'S SCREEN AND MOVING IT AROUND!
Ok so it might have been a little off topic, but it is still funny.
People's sheer stupidity amazes me sometimes. There is a guy selling Google Gulp on ebay AND THE BIDS HAVE ALREADY REACHED $31 (US). WTF PEOPLE LOOK AT YOUR CALENDARS.
You don't really need research to figure this one out. Have you seen some of the articles, blogs, etc. on the net recently? It's almost as if people care more about expressing phonetical when writing more than gramatical accuracy and correct spelling. That's one of the main reasons the SAT has been changed in the States. Kids graduate from High School and can't write for shit. If you want an easy part time job, I would suggest becoming a tutor for college remedial english classes.
While I was in college, my sister was (and still is) a high school ballet teacher. She would bring home students' papers to grade over thanksgiving breaks. I would, occasionally, glance at some of the papers and be shocked at the terrible grammar and spelling. I swear it looked like an IRC chat log at times. It seems as though alot of kids don't realize that there is a difference between the way you speak to people (dialogue) and the way you write papers.
I also remember, here in the states, when our teachers would groan everytime we begged them to use calculators on math tests. They said "you'll learn more without them". They were right. Doing simple to mid level arithmetic in your head keeps your mind sharp.
On another note, look at the expression on the little girl's face who is sitting in front of the computer. Is that not classic a classic goatse reaction or what?
NOW they get in on it? What do you think remixes are? In fact, what do you call band and orchestra "arrangments"? This concept is nothing new, it's just being applied to a more modern form of music.
Also, riddims only involve using the same beat with different lyrics. More originality is required to do this.
As far as mashing up is concerned, it's essentially (this may be a little off topic but I threw it in anyways so fuckit) the same as playing a song with a different instrument than it was originally performed on. Like a flute or guitar player playing the lead in Take 5 instead of a trumpet (or saxophone, i forget) player.
There are literally hundreds of remixes to jay-z's black album, including (and I couldn't make this up if I tried, they are all real) the pink album, the blue album, the purple album, the blacker album, the yellow album, the red album, etc.
Imagine hundreds of dj's across the globe, taking the vocals to 1 album, then putting their own beats over them and naming the album the (insert color here) album and there you go. Alot of them suck, but some of them are pretty good, especially the grey album.
Forbidden in Germany and restricting the freedom of speech are child pornography, right wing extremist "hate" sites, incitement to commit crimes, race discrimination, treasonable conduct as an agent for sabotage purposes, glorification of violence, or offence against the law for the protection of the youth.
I can understand the child pornography thing, or even the right wing extremist "hate" sites and race discrimination, but what if someone is doing research on the rise of extremist groups and race discrimination? Are they now just SOL? Also, glorification of violence? Have you seen how many german kids play FPS online nowadays? It may be a little late for that.
Also, will Google.de be the only part of google to block this out? If so, one could still just click on "google in english" and bypass the censorship since it only applies to Google.de?
If you think it's bad now, wait until 2007 when this comes out.
Inevitably, parents will buy this for their children, then complain about gaming companies when they notice little 10 year old jimmy is beating up hookers, forming gangs with other 10 year olds, and killing cops online.
My power supply died a few weeks ago. I noticed that while playing games, my computer would turn off at random times. Then it got to thte point where NOTHING (fans, keyboard, not even the fan ON the PSU) lit up when I tried to turn on the computer. The only thing that turned on was this little yellow light on my botherboard. When you can't even get a simple case fan to start, you know it's time to get a new PSU.
I was lucky enough to find a $60 500w PSU at microcenter. Now everything works fine.
P.S. I have an Athlon64, radeon 9800, 2 disk drives, 1 floppy drive, 2 hard drives, 3 fans running off of it. When I did some research BEFORE I built the system, all of the sites I checked said I would need at LEAST 400-450w. I ran my system off of the 350w PSU (it came with the case when I bought an athlon xp 1900 system) for a good 4 months with this system before it died.
While I would agree that firefox is a very good browser, you have to remember that it's still software; that means that there are ALWAYS improvements to be made.
The SDLC doesn't just stop at the "ship final version" stage, you keep making improvements on it until you either a)run out of money, b) run out of users, or c) move on to a new project.

AARRRRGGGHHH!!! My eyes are bleeding thanks to these bad jokes!!

because today is April 1 and this lame excuse for an April Fool's Day joke won't work unless you're gullible enough to do it.
that's called the cabbage patch
So do most pimps, strippers, pornographers, drug dealers, pyramid schemers, etc.
You should never envy someone who appears to be wealthier than you because you never know what they had to/were willing to do to make it.
I've actually written "CHECK ID" on the FRONT of my cards in big bold "sharpie" print. If they still don't check, i just look at them shaking my head.

Wait a second, you're on /. and you don't know how to fix your own computer?
I may need to sell my Nintendo DS and get a PSP now.
CowboyNeal, you insensitive clod!
I'd say sometime after 2029 A.D.
Don't ever quite (read it twice) unless you have something else in line.
:)
The same rule applies to relationships..don't ever break up with a girl unless you have someone else in line.

Wait a second, FOXNews is reporting it. Nevermind then.
