    ... is that it drags along Big Marketing's involvement. The Big Tech companies are not in this in order to help people, but to open up a new data collection stream, and subsequently a new revenue stream. This would be a great idea if I could trust Big tech with my health data but, as Microsoft has shown with Windows 10, Big Tech is more interested in aggressive data collection than customer privacy..

An operating system which had such a poor uptake when it was given away for free and subsequently Microsoft had to try to trick users into upgrading to it, finally has more hits than those older versions.     Seriously... How can anyone even think that this was an unintentional by-product of some other update? Has Apple really gotten that sloppy with their software development process? ... Really.... Apple is famed for their software developemnt process and the user experience it creates. imo, this was an intentional "feature" that the fan bois would love. Unfortunately, it backfired.

    Quite correct. Apple had the golden goose and was eating it too. Quite the boon to the stock price.... while it lasted. I learned about the Apple hardware upgrade treadmill when my Macmini was tossed aside by Apple because it was no longer "compatible."

    Troll? Have the Mozilla fanbois taken over the site? I expressed an opinion about Mozilla, and it's a troll? 'Tis a shame Mozilla has become so thin-skinned that they need to be held in adulation, and cannot handle even mild criticism.

    Yes, there is an ounce of rebellious spirit left on this site. Unfortunately, Mozilla (through their poor management decisions) is mischanneling said rebellious spirit against the Firefox developers, and not in the manner you hope.

    The decision cannot be justified. Period. Full stop. Are the completely wrong people in charge of, and making decisions at, Mozilla? Do those people care not one iota about what the customers want? OK, that last question was rhetorical because these past few years Mozilla has shown a stunning indifference to what the Firefox users want. Stunning indifference.

    ... what would the people be doing if they were not surfing the porn sites? How detrimental to the environment would what ever they might be doing be? In other owrds, you cannot just take the environment cost or surfing porn sites as if it were an isolated event, it is not. It is part of a person's day lifestyle and should be analyzed as such.

    Google won't blacklist anyone. But an ISP can do more subtle things to mess with the tech firms. An "overloaded" edge router here an there can make it look more like the Big Tech firm's problem.

    The ISPs can't wait to start charging Big Tech for access to their networks. That is why Big Tech is quiet, they are afraid to rile the ISPs.

    My email client is configured to not allow remote connections when I read an email. Some emails are not readable without allowing the tracking stuff, so I don't read them. It is as simple as that. So far, not one important email has been unreadable with remote access disabled.

    In my experience, on the same laptop hardware, same distribution, before and after the systemd transition, the "after" has had more reliability problems, especially during shutdown. I often see the laptop not shutdown because for a couple of minutes. It just sits there with this dumb countdown on the screen. It looks like it is waiting for some process to end, but it does not indicate what process. I never had that issue prior to systemd being adopted.

    I am now actively looking for a distribution that does not use systemd.

    Sometimes I have to wonder if the wrong feature goal (faster start-up times) was over-emphasized in the whiplash switch to systemd by the distributions. For me, the faster start up is just not that big of a deal anymore, now that I've moved to SSD.

    I somewhat disagree. Most systems exist for many years or even decades after they should have been replaced....

    My point was less about having a job, and more about growing in a job. If you don't want the lay-off target painted on your back, stay curious. Of course, if your goal is to stagnate then, by all means, link yourself to a IT system and don't learn anything new. It's your career and your choice.

    IT systems come and go. IT people inexorably linked to systems also come and go. Best way not to go? Stay curious, learn new things, learn new systems. Look to the future, create the future you want to work in. Don't link yourself to the past and present.
