I can't believe that that got modded as flamebait. Rape is the central theme in a lot of Manga, and no one seems to mind. This is a really sick thing, and I don't see why pointing it out is flamebait.
The interesting thing is that movies never made the transition to video games very well. Tron is a good counter example. But I think we will have the same phenomenon in the other direction. Anyone care to add counter examples to Tron ?
Remember in "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress", if an earthling spent a few months on Luna then the could never return. (Unless they did some special kind of centrifuged exercising.) Apparently Heinlein wasn't quite right.
There was a similar situation between AT&T and IBM in the late 80's regarding fiber optics technology. In that case the ruling was in favor of AT&T (which would be Apple in this case.)
I am so slick of the sexism on Slashdot. Of course a woman can land the space shuttle. I am a 48 yo grandmother and feminist and I have been an engineer for 26 years. I was programming in C and assembly in the 70's when most of you sexist geeks were in diapers or not even born.
Yeah, this book is mostly about Ted Talyor who used to build really small bombs for the US government and then quit. He was really into these issues years ago and no one listened to him, although McPhee had the insight to write a book about him.
His point about the WTC is that a really small nuclear bomb could knock one of them over. I guess we found out that it was easier than having a nuclear bomb.
Actually, I am offended by your comment and the name of the site. Aside from being a feminist, I am a witch of the northern gods, and I wish people would not take their names in vain. If it was Jesustorrent a lot of people would complain.
Yes you are right. In that case IBM was filing a patent that recommended types of software systems for companies that neeeded to keep larged inventories, and I think Information Builders sued them.
That's true - Coifman from the Yale math dept. that has a company that is doing this. But it hasn't hit the popular press yet. Among the mathematicians it is controversial whether it will work.
Yes I read that too. He also wanted to show flesh splattering everywhere when a rocket is used in an enclosed area. A lot of money is going to be spent on CGI effects, like being melted in acid.
Yes, that actually was initiated by the Mayor of New York, La Guardia, when he first took office. The garment industry had quite a reputation for being uncivilized. You can even get a sense of it today if you go to that part of town.
The story with the Foveon is that it has a fundamentally different way of forming a color image. Current cameras use what is called a Bayer pattern, where the pixels more or less alternate between being red greed and blue, and interpolation is used to get the full RGB value at each pixel. The Foveon camera actually has 3 separate chips for the RGB. So actually most cameras that say 6.1 m color are 6.1 m b/w in some sense.
Yes, it came out in pirated form before it hit the stands, if that is what you mean. But it didn't make much difference since back then pirated software moved so slowly, since people used to have to physically get together and bring their disk drives. I remember having little parties like this with my Apple II !! Those were the days....
That was a theft of mostly technical motor vehicle data from a study, and so it wasn't very damaging to the participants. Although I wouldn't want my car model / color etc. publicly available.
Right. Or, as I am thinking about, it could be a good basis for a homebrew "supercomputer".

What about getting women there ?

From the article:
"....with an interface so simple your grandmother could use it."
As a 48 yo grandmother and feminist I am offended. Why don't they say a grandfather could use it ? Go ahead, mod me down....
Yes you are correct. It was in 1981 and was called the "Earth Phone".
Your question makes sense, and I have no idea why you are being modded down. I haven't played the game and I wondered that myself.
No, I am afraid that you are the one who is wrong. That is a common misconception, that Ritchie is trying to clear up.

True, but I can live with that. What really bothers me is how bad the index is. I am not as positive about this book as most people I have spoken too.
Yes, it was, and it was called something silly like BRAIN-NET.
Actually, you may be joking, but I don't think Mormon or Muslim children can play games with dice.
There actually was a patented thing in the 80's like this by IBM.
I read that he was a national champion debater in HS, so this should be interesting.
