  1. Re:Competition is superior to force on Another NTP Patent Invalidated · · Score: 1

What you've said is not entirely true. In many instances, yes, the better product sells. But lets say tomorrow I create a newer, better version of an iPod that could blow it out of the water, and try to market it and create it myself. Who's going to win here? Apple. Because they have the current marketplace, money, and other resources needed to squash my idea, reverse engineer it, and have a better version out, which pushes me out of business. However, if I've patented my new iPod clone, I can prevent Apple from doing this (theoretically).

Sears used to do this, unfortunately, with Craftsman tools. They'd find a small little tool someone was selling out of their garage and make it themselves and makes billions (RoboGrip was done this way). The little guy in the garage had nothing to stand on except his patent.

So, yes, our current patent system is in bad shape, but it still can help the little guy who has been truly wronged by some big corporation somewhere.

  3. Re:Choosing My Own Fonts on What Makes a Good Web Font · · Score: 1

My point is when someone uses a radically different font, such as the Ransom Font, Snap ITC, or something such as that and does their entire site in it, or uses a custom font. Verdana, Arial, and the like are common fonts that most websites use, and are acceptable to me. In addition, when using a font such as Verdana for your default font, it tends not to break your site if a user chooses to make their browser default override. Using Comic Sans in size 20, however, has a drastically changed appearance when your browser defaults that back to a different font.

I don't think I'm explaining myself extremely well at all, but hopefully, you'll get what I'm saying.

  4. Choosing My Own Fonts on What Makes a Good Web Font · · Score: 2, Interesting

Personally, I like to change my default font to Verdana. I do this on my website, and in my browser. I simply hate Times New Roman, and am not overly fond of Helvetica either. Personally, I see why in logos and things users may want to use other fonts, but since these are typically images, the problem of users not having a font is a moot point. For the rest of websites, though, typically, most decent websites use a standard font such as arial, verdana, helvetica, or Times New Roman.

While this is extremely close-minded and un-artistic, this is honestly the way I prefer it. I hate it when my browser is taken over by someone else's fonts, cursors, or popups. To me, they're all the same intrusive, annoying thing, and are all on the same level of annoyance.

Personally, where I work, personal mp3 players and cameras are banned (we obviously have cameras for business use, not mp3 players). We also have our USB ports locked out. You can't just plug in a flash drive or anything without prior admin approval, so even if you brought your mp3 player in from home, it wouldn't work. Companies simply need to implement this to solve this problem. I know there are always ways around it, but this would simply be a step in the right direction.

I love my FireFox. I really do. But I completely agree. Every browser has problems. Internet Explorer causes vulnerabilities, FireFox isn't compatible, Opera has ads, etc etc etc.

I'm a diehard FireFox fan. I have it installed on every computer I touch (except work), and use it 99% of the time. Unfortunately, since I still have to open IE to use anything related to work (Java problems with FireFox), or open IE to listen to musical content (WMP is not compatible with FireFox, yet), I still use IE sometimes. This is honestly why I'm waiting on IE7. From what I've seen, Microsoft is making sincere efforts at becoming the best again. If IE7 is better than FireFox, I'll use it. Otherwise, I'll stick with Firefox. But unfortunately, even once 1.5 comes out, and 7 comes out, we'll still have problems, and neither one will be perfect.

  11. Dish Network DVR on Software PVRs Becoming Tivo Killers · · Score: 2, Interesting

I, personally, use Dish Network's DVR, and am quite appalled with it. Not only do I have to pay an additional $10 a month to use it (its supposed to be $5, but they give you a hidden fee), but its fairly unreliable. The system powers itself off if its not used in awhile. Thats not a bad feature. The thing is, if it does this, it doesn't record programs once its off. Quite annoying. To top this off, it will sometimes say it has recorded a program, but it didn't. So, when you try and re-record it (if you're this lucky), it will cancel the new recording because it will say its a duplicate. To add insult to injury, the box itself can become quite noisy, as it heats up a good bit, and the fans are loud. The Dish Network service is great, it rarely goes down, and is great, except for some occasional lags between the video and audio, but I'd be glad to trade my DVR in for a computer-based version any day of the week (mostly for DVD burning capability).

  16. Re:Monkey in the middle on SiteKey to Prevent Phishing · · Score: 1

The way its supposed to work is that since there are over 1,000 different possible images, if you were a fake site, you couldn't possibly randomly display the right image. To top it off, the phrase is created by you and must also match, so its even harder to randomly create that. So, as a BoA member who uses this service, I know that if I don't see my image with my self-made phrase below, something is wrong, and I know to not login. I also know that if I don't see the sitekey option at all, I'm not at a BoA site and to not login.

The system IMHO is to prevent phishers from getting your login information in the first place, not so much to keep them from logging on as you. Its not perfect, and its still easily beatable, but as a BoA member, seeing them do anything at all to try and save their rep as the worst bank for security is nice.
