I imagine that the social networking sites are useful for networking but then the conversations go offsite.

For instance, you move to a college in NYC and join both the college network and the city network. On the network page on Facebook you notice a highlighted group: Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition. There you notice people posting on some subject...what they think makes a good DM. It isn't the ideal place for "chatting" but it'd be easy using this group to post, "Who'd like to meet up Thursday night for a game?"

Now let's say the person who posted the comment about good DMs is an attractive girl. You use the Six Degrees application to find out that she is friend's with your roommate's girlfriend. You now are aware of a connection you didn't know you had and this provides something more to talk about.

Facebook seems great for grouping people with similar interests in similar locations. The chatting on there definitely leaves something to be desired but most people don't seem to get on there to chat, anyway. But if you have an obscure interest, it is helpful for seeking out others with similar interests. If you live in NYC it'd probably be great. If you live in a small town...not so much.

I'm no comic guru but didn't this happen all the time with batman and robin? I remember people joking frequently about Robin wearing bright clothes to be an easy target and therefore be easy in motivating and developing batman? On the flip side, the bad things that happened to Rogue and Psylocke of the X-Men were to develop them as characters, not their male teammates. It sounds like most of the complaints can be chalked up to their just not being a whole lot of female main characters relative to male stars so statistically speaking the bad things that happen to females are going to be happening to nonmain characters. And that can be chalked up to there just being a lot more male comic fans than female.

This is slashdot. Even people who agree with you will point out if you overstate your case, bring up an incorrect side comment, or simply use "their" instead of "there". It doesn't always mean they are defending the parent or grandparent or great grandparent poster.

Just like the guy doesn't know why the girl acted like a jerk (and yes, she can act like a jerk on an off moment even if she isn't a jerk in her "normal life") it's also true that you may be jumping to conclusions about why all these other guys (or perhaps girls) seem to be jumping to a jokesters defense.

Personally, I got the impression that the original poster wasn't making an attack on the woman who landed a wonder woman job but poking a little fun at the feminist caricature. Perhaps it was uncalled for...but I didn't see it all that much more uncalled for than when some poster mentions a girlfriend and a half dozen people pipe in with some "humorous" comment about living in a basement or "pics or it didn't happen" or other such at male nerd caricatures. Again, doesn't make it right, but again we can't assume we know why a particular person made such a joke.

I really don't know that I'd agree that one type is so much more common than another, either. Girls that are jerks and use a cliche feminist line while being a jerk aren't exactly scarce where I've lived. Neither are guys who seem to have hygeine issues and make some comment about their mom that make it sound like he lives downstairs from her. We tend not to delve deeper with both of those kinds of people to get at the truth of their lives and understand them and figure out if our assumptions are correct simply because that process is so often an unpleasant one.

now cue the posts about how I misspelled hygiene and point out some superfluous flaw in my reasoning. This is slashdot. Enjoy it for what it is. :)

That was my initial reaction, too, but I'm guessing that there is a separate flat rate price depending on the product. So for a desktop there might be one flat rate to fix whatever problem, large or small. There might be a separate flat rate to fix any problem a laptop might have, yet another flat rate for an ipod fix, etc. If that is the case, it makes sense to call it a flat rate even if it varies by product. If I call in for a repair on my ipod and they say the price will depend on what the problem is...unless I choose the flat rate option, in which case there is one price and they will do whatever it takes to repair it, including replacing it entirely if necessary. Would it make sense to not call it a flat rate simply because they charge differently if I were to send in an emac?

While I couldn't write with two pens I think I could accurately move my one hand to the general area that I want to work on and hold it there or slide it occasionally while my other hand did the drawing. This could allow me to keep my drawing hand steady and in place as I drew beyond the field of the zoomed in display.

If I'm planning on spending $X00.00 for my kids for Christmas and I had hoped to spend it on the Wii and Wii related products, then if it's sold out, I MIGHT give my kids an IOU for the wii and give it to them next month...but the remaining money I would have spent on extra controllers and games will now be spent on something else because I can't bear to give them temporarily useless products for Christmas.

Come January/February I won't magically have more money to spend on all the extras. At best I'll have skimped on Christmas enough to buy the console and an extra controller and that's about it.
