Is this a surprise or news for that matter? Of course you'll have people commenting that its for our safety, blah, blah, blah-the administration is doing the right thing. A bunch of other people will comment that this is appalling and that they should be held accountable. The truth of the matter is that they never will be held accountable, I guess its just good to know about it?

I agree. Nintendo, believe it or not is in the best position to bring a true next gen system to the masses because the dust is finally settling with regards to the sales of HDTVs and Home theater equipment. 2 years ago, people were still buying CRTs, Plasmas were king, 1080p was hardly around and with all the FUD concerning the 2009 switch you can bet that a bunch of people will throw away those old bulky CRTs for shiny new cheap LCDs. Nintendo, didn't even bother to include DVD playback on their console and outsold them all. I bet their next system will be even more revolutionary with better motion controls, some IBM or Intel low power chip with multiple cores, Blu Ray, SSD, HDMI/Displayport, WI-FI and some highly advanced graphic chip probably from ATI to draw the stuff, by then they can probably get that down to $350 with Wii Sports HD packed in. As for Blu-ray, its still too expensive for mass adoption. The cheapest drive is for PC and thats about $125. It may turn out to be another Betamax after all as they have yet to license the tech to smaller Asian companies so Sony, Samsung, LG & Panasonic are basically the only players in town and you can't compete $399 VS $400 because people are not going to fork it over to begin with. They want to see $75 to $150 for a decent standalone player, until that happens then they will have a leg to stand on.

  3. Re:I Wonder... on RIAA Not Sharing Settlement Money With Artists · · Score: 1

Artists will get very little if anyone understands the economics of the sleazy music industry. If Jammie Thomas got sued for $9250 a song, do you really think Metallica,Green Day or whoever will get half or even a significant portion thereof? After all, its each artist's intellectual property, right? Record companies are scared because when CDs used to cost $17-$25, they were getting $14+-,$22+- respectively. The artist was and is lucky to get .50 on the dollar from that CD sale, hence their $ is made from touring and performances. With the advent of mp3s this changed the landscape dramatically. If I'm an artist and I want to sell my music through any digital service DRM free of course-who needs a huge company behind them? I can get .50 cents of every song as opposed to .50 cents of an entire 14 song album. Its far more lucrative for independent labels, the buzz is usually word of mouth, "internet leaks",street buzz, youtube and way less overhead. You can sell your music for $10 and make $5-6 on each CD, not bad if you sell 100-200K units. With these big label deals, huge amounts in advertising, marketing are spent and need to be recouped. This is the downfall of the music industry, the business model is the old Pimp/Prostitute scheme and that can only last so long. I remember DMX in his prime said in an interview that he was getting .80 of every CD sold which was unheard of for a rapper at the time. So out of that $9250, how much do you think Metallica will get?

The article touched on some interesting opinions and yes those are arguably the best exclusive games on the console. However, modding it gave me almost every emulator and they play quite well to this day on top of having XBMC. In a way the latest consoles are basically late on this stuff. Now all of a sudden downloadable classics, media center is the next "coolest thing". I think that if the Capcoms,Konamis,Squares, etc would've showed more love the original Xbox would've had a better showing. Imagine Devil May Cry with normal and bump mapping and just better graphic quality, the same goes for MGS(that old PS2 port doesn't count)and a host of other PS2 games. I say that the graphic capabilities are still up there, the only thing missing is HD of course but other than that it still has legs to stand on. For the record, I own all 3 current gen consoles and eventually will own all 3 "next-gen" consoles again, especially when the PS3 goes down in price.

So yes if we were to follow international law, then most presidents here would be put to death for war crimes under the Geneva Conventions which GWB knew could happen so they crafted authority to bypass the law. Forget about all of this backward compatibility bullshit. Its the feature that everyone talks about but no one hardly uses. I can count the times on one hand how many original PS1 games I've put into my PS2. Why do I want to play MGS1 on the PS2 when the GC has a remake of it? To MS's credit they're trying or they claim they are. The Xbox has about 800 titles and the PS2 much larger but with the radical diferences in hardware it can be pretty tricky to emulate. Look at the hard time its taking homebrew programmers to get N64 on the PSP or any other system for that matter. Both companies have to sift through the "important" titles to make sure they work, and sales figures chose those. Do we make sure that Kabuki Warriors and MTV Celebrity Deathmatch are compatible with the 360? Hell no but we sure are gonna make Riddick and Ninja Gaiden comaptible. How many PS1 games were compatible with the PS2 and every iteration of it? The feature is just there so you don't feel so bad plunking down your hard earned cash into the "next generation" of consoles. PC hardware changes more frequently and hardcore people upgrade just as much. Consoles last about 5 years, hardcore gamers usually have all 3, and people are whining and complainig that they can't play a copy Barbie Horse Adventure or whatever the fuck on their "new" console.

I agree, a dvd player with upconversion that supports 720/1080 is much more economical than buying a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player plus their $30-$40 price tags for discs. Sony is thinking that they will drive the HD market with the PS3 the same way people claim that PS2 drove the DVD market which is a common error. DVDs and players were already becoming popular before PS2- it just happened to ride the wave. People said "Hey, I can get a PS2 that plays games and dvds--f**king great!!!" only to realize later that it just wasn't designed for constant use which later rendered it useless due to poor construction. This I believe was voiced by the developer of Capcom's Devil May Cry series where he complained of the shoddy craftmanship and said he was on his 2nd or 3rd PS2 model, saying that this is how Sony inflates its sales #s...etc. The same happended with the PS1 except that didn't play anything. Make no mistake, Sony does makes good shit but is a bit misguided in its view of consumers as being pirates, hence their insistence of rootkits, propreitary formats,etc...Sad.

The only problem I forsee is will parents run out and buy a PS3 for their young ones or their teenagers who don't have jobs? The majority of Sony's user base is partially in thanks to casual gamers and young gamers. The hardcore gamer (sans fanboys) usually has all 3 systems. At $500-$600 a pop, that becomes a problem for casual and young gamers and even a cash strapped hardcore gamer, this is where the other options (360 and Wii) become more viable. I really don't care about Blu-Ray as all it does is add more $$ to an already expensive piece of software/hardware and I seriously doubt that parents in particular are going to rush out and buy a new $1500-$3500 HDTV so they can watch a movie they already have on DVD in a new expensive format and still can't tell the difference in quality--much less to let their kids play a game on it. If this is what Sony is banking on then more power to them. I'm wondering if Blu-Ray games will start to cost in the $75-$90 range and movies $40-$50.Xbox 360 games already retail at $60 and are on regular dual layer dvds. Rootkits,DRM,UMD,Minidisc,NetMD,Betamax,Bean, and that other failed attempt of a digital music player. These are all testimonials that "Blu-Ray" and hence the PS3 may fail. I don't care how MGS4,rubber ducks, leaves, etc previews you can show, its sad to see a company who revitalized the industry become so arrogant and untrustworthy to consumers.

This whole rootkit fiasco maybe be big, or can be easily swept under the rug-as usual. They already have 2 big beefs with M$, blu-ray and rootkit. If M$ wanted they can run a dirty smear campaign against Sony ala the recent New Jersey governor race.
