I was just thinking last week how much fun it would be to have a game released with a game engine that would allow expansion and customizing that allows users to download and play others content. I'm not just talking maps. I'm talking game mechanics.
At the height of the Myth II craze, there were tons of maps and game variants that you could play on Bungie.net. There were all of the WWII varients including some with tanks (definately NOT in the original Myth II game). I remember one that's not that old that had civil war characters.
If you want consumers to pay $50 or $60 for a game, there has to be replayability. People are fickle; they move on to other things.
Enough with the sensationalism. Some rancher with wacky, reactionary ideas running for the Republican nomination in Texas is not news. There is a sitting Republican governor, Rick Perry, who will get the Republican nomination. The current Republican State Comptroller, Carol Keaton Strayhorn, is running as an independant to avoid splitting the Republican party. Kinky Friedman, the homorist-writer-musician, is also running as an independant.
An article from a newspaper in Amarillo about a rancher from Corpus Christi is not news.
Problem is, Apple is currently a consumer electronics company. Their computers are enjoying a renaissance mostly because of the dominance and hip-factor of the iPod, and not because of the superior quality of their hardware and OS -- if people wanted quality, Budweiser would not be the King of Beers.
I think that this post confuses the difference between quality and taste. Here's a loaded question: Can you name a better portable music player than an iPod? What do you mean by "better?" An iPod works extremely well, and it's easy to use. It integrates easily into desktop environments. It has an short learning curve. Most iPod owners would say that it is a high quality product.
The brewing process for Budweiser has extremely high tolerances and a high level of consistency in its billions of gallons of beer. Is it a British ale? No, but that doesn't mean its not high quality. Feel free to make fun of pilsner drinkers, but don't say that their beer is low quality. You just don't like it.
Apple makes high quality products. You happen to place a premium on certain aspects of Sun's products that you believe Apple lacks. Fair enough. However, there are aspects to Apple's products that Sun lacks. It's not just a "hip factor." Quality comes in many forms.
could I get rid of my Xbox? Standardized hardware is what makes console gaming so attractive. Apple standarizes hardware. This one box could satisfy the needs of LOTS of people in an attractive, small form factor.
Someone at Arstechnica pointed out that 'per incidence' meant the creation of the master CD, so however many different master CDs had been created with it installed would be the liability number. I think it 16 or so CDs. So 1.6 million.
Yep. That's where I go when I have a question about statutory construction. Those Arstechnica boys know what they're talkin' 'bout.
Surely this will only work until someone with half a clue actually opens their case, won't it? What good is a sticker when a the chips, the mountings, and the heat-sink bracket are different between the celeron and p4?
How many people really have "half a clue?" First, go out on the street and randomly ask people about current events, a few historical figures, a couple of science questions, and geography. Almost too many news programs to count have found that most people are pretty ignorant of the world around them and history. You'll get the same result. Next, ask them what's the difference between a Socket 478 and an LGA775. How long would it take until someone on the street can answer this?
In its first 24 hours, the game raked in $125 million dollars courtesy of 2.4 million copies sold. By comparison, Spider-man holds the current box-office record for biggest opening weekend take, having earned a comparatively paltry $114 million over three days.
Not to say anything bad, but this comaprison can't really be made. The last time I checked, movie tickets didn't cost $50 each.
On the other hand, I doubt that Halo 2 cost $100M or more to make. How much did Spiderman cost to make?
Most people are locked into two year contracts. The Rokr is a good value, $149.99 with a 2-year Cingular contract, but you'll have to get out of your current contract. Most people have to pay early termination fees to cancel their contracts, so the only people that are in the market for a Rokr are people looking for new service or are eligible under Cingular's rules to upgrade.
Personally, I want one, but I'm not going to pay a termination fee to get one.
The purchase of Bungie was important (and irritated quite a few Mac people, myself included), but Xbox Live is impressive. When I am considering whether a game is worth purchasing, I look first for whether the game is Live Enabled. Xbox Live verifies something that everyone should know, human opponents and team mates are more fun than AI. Xbox Live gives real value, because games finally have real replay value.
If there is any lesson to be learned from the Xbox, it is that people like to play against other people, not computers. Is Halo 2 the best FPS ever? No. There are better shooters on the PC, many of them play better on the PC, and they certainly usually look much better with the appropriate expensive hardware. On the other hand, Xbox Live allows for easy network play at all times of the day against opponents from all over the world.
Did I mention that it's easy?
Does M$ need a great MMORPG? Sure. Does it need to have other genres better represented? Of course. However, having online play on so many games means that you're never stuck trying to get past a certain level. You don't even have to play the single player games. Live is fun.
Besides, M$ never released Myth on the Xbox. What a bummer.
I'm not going to get into all of the issues revolving around breath tests. It's pointless, and there is a lot of literature available, especially from associations of criminal defense lawyers. If you're interested, it's out there. This is one situation where hiring a good criminal defense attorney really CAN make a huge difference for the average person even though its not a celebrity murder. If you get arrested for drunk driving and you don't think that you were drunk, open your wallet. Otherwise, your going to get f****d.
On the other hand, there's no such thing as a "technicality" in legal jargon. Lawyers don't use that word in open court or in pleadings. It's a layman's term. What people need to understand is that the word "technicality" means a violation of a rule of procedure, a rule of evidence, a statute, or the Constitution.
"Having my rights violated" is NOT limited to being an African-American in 1960s Alabama and having a police dog attack me. My rights are broader than that and are enumerated as discussed above, and any time someone decides to gloss over the fine print in the name of justice, I get a little worried.
The principal protagonists are giant hairy carnivorous alien spiders. And you're rooting for them all the way.
Agreed. A truly brilliant book, but almost impossible to read.
Bungie was great before it sold out.
Of course, it still makes pretty good games.

Bullshit. It takes good 20 minutes to break a palette to pieces using a crowbar, and you're covered with sweat afterwards.
Maybe you should workout more. It's just a suggestion.
Assuming you are straight: yes.
What? No broadband? How sad.
An article from a newspaper in Amarillo about a rancher from Corpus Christi is not news.
I bet that he'll blow it all on a can of anchovies.
"Mario Melee."
That controller offers many avenues to stress relief.
Could it be the downfall of the "button pusher?"
Actually, wouldn't you get an apple tree?

I miss the '80's.

Whew! I thought you said, "Don't root for Texas." For a moment I was stuck with the strange vision of a Slashdot reader attending USC.

We stood beneath an amber moon,
And softly murmured 'Some day soon'
We kissed and clung together
Then, tomorrow was another day
The morning found me miles away
With still a million things to say. . . .
Just in time for my income tax rebate!
On the other hand, I doubt that Halo 2 cost $100M or more to make. How much did Spiderman cost to make?
Or maybe $sys$Win32.Rommel

At this temperature the yeast can still metabolise but does not generate alcohol.
I thought I finally found something to get me through another day at work.
This is crazy, and some interprising IP lawyer who's tired of doing billable hour work is going to be all over this.
is usually plenty.
